how can your impression of the film not be influenced by all this discussion? i loved this film but have gotten a bad vibe from macgregor. i think the films should speak for themselves. i don't like seeing the film-makers have to defend themselves. or sell their films. i think everything would be more honest and less hostile. just my opinion.

I'm with ma' boy MacB. The fact that a more experienced member left us a post saying "you guys might wanna talk more, it gets more people to watch your movie, it puts you at the top of the list, etc" means that the way we represent ourselves in a forum is definitely having an affect on the voting.

True, but how is that different from any other film festival?

I'm not saying you're wrong, this has been discussed and their are differing views on it. And the standard may change, I don't know. Myself? I like a certain amount of prior buzz and "PR" after the fact. It is, in my mind, how things happen in the real world. But that's not necessarily what this fest is about so who knows. But it's good that you guys voice your opinion on this matter (although may I suggest a separate thread dedicated to the topic?) as it helps us to know how things should go.

Matt

Oh, and Macgregor: I think you're chill as hell. And I think you're handling this friggin' explosion pretty well too. Forum arguments are crazy and circular. Keep it real buddy.

:costumed-smiley-047 <<<WHAT! Just noticed this. Yes.

Of course, I am complete agree with you. But...

It has any sense make this 'individual film discussions' without the opinions of filmakers?

I think this festival is something different to others festivals. This festival give you the opportunity to ask directly to filmakers, and filmakers can answer to you in the same way.

Is an option ok? you only can see the short film and vote after, or also you can hear the comments of the filmakers. I think this option is like the special features of a DVD, in this festival you can see screengrabs, CGI details, behind the scenes, drawings and art design, even comments of angry actors... I think this could interest to other people who want to make movies.

you're right. it does make this festival unique. i, however, am not a business man. i can't shmooze. i don't like defending or selling my stuff. i'd rather let it just be. in fact, in a way i envy those who can do the business side. and like MattC said, that's how it is in the real world. but here in this little contest maybe we have some control. maybe here it could be just about the art? i'm curious as to what the others think so i started this thread:

I'm with Brice, Envision is 100% right. Good job, Envision.

I'm gonna quote Macgregor here:

"So have in mind please (and i dont want to offend the other participants here) the competence, and think that from all the other shortfilms it is hard to find any competence ... I find Simillo not the best shortfilm ever but certainly it is in the top list in this contest."

Well, it sounds to me like you did offend every other participant in the contest and you are pretty high on yourself and on your film. Come on, man.

now that i read that (envisions post) I agree with you guys. I thought the film was very good, but now knowing this i cant think of it the same. I'd find it hard to give votes to someone i cant respect.

TAINTED, I found a great story in the same Blade Runner world. I´ve never seen a fan film in the Blade runner universe but i´d like to make this shortfilm next year.

There's been some half-assed attempts at one, but nothing that got finished. I seriously can't imagine you not getting funding now that you have this to use as a treatment. Hell, I bet a bunch of us right here would donate just to see more. :)

Ok, then dont vote.

Stop being politically correct and say the f------g truth. Kevin Smith wont be where he is if he didnt tell what he was thinking.

Yeah, as always money is a problem. We could do it now in DVD quality, but it would be a pity not being able to go to the big screen. And shooting 35mm is too expensive then. There must be a solution to our problem.

We can get Syd Mead into the project. I dont know if Vangelis is still good enough to participate. ;D

Hey Macgregor- care to enlighten me on my question? Any thoughts / tips would be apreciated. Thanks.

Macgregor-

Could you share any tips on how you went exposing your shots? For example, did you leave the DVX fully open, and then adjust the lens, did you open up the lens, and then adjust the dvx, a combination of both? When using the LCD to judge your exposure, did you have the zebra's on, adn to what setting? Did you just judge it by eye, or was there something you were looking for specifically?

Sorry I missed your question.

The lense on the G35 was almost always set at f2.8. Then i adjust the camera iris, which only works as +/- light, not affecting DOF.

I trust the LCD because i know what i am getting with it, even when somethimes it "lies" (at cloudy days it looks very dark).

I turn on the zebra for a moment just to check everything is in order. But it is annoying to me so i turn it off while recording.

Yes....kevin smiths career....thats what i want and where i want to be someday.. :D

ANYWAY....the
"f------"
truth was i liked it. Now i cant like it anymore because i found out the creator has an ego.

Wow, this thread's added PAGES since I last checked in a couple days ago, so I've only read the last couple.

MacB/Abraham, I was that dude that advised you to interact with the crowd more in your thread, and that by responding not only are you creating more discussion with questions/answers, but it also bumps you back to the top of the forum list, which may REMIND someone to WATCH your film. More discussion should not have any effect on the voting, and I don't believe it does.

In fact, if you rec'd FEWER actual votes, but they were all good, you may do better than a film that rec'd votes from LOTS of people, but the overall average vote total was lower ... make sense?

Weston, I've already made it clear in this thread how I feel about arrogant people ... but it shouldn't have any effect on the FILM, as there's not a section to actually judge a film maker's personality. Therefore, if your're scoring honestly, this will likely rank VERY high in camera, lighting, etc., and then it's VERY subjective for some of the others, as we've seen in this thread. Even camera/lighting CAN be subjective, though it's a hard one to argue in this case.

So I hope, no matter how anyone feels about a particular film maker, that no one is letting that weigh in how the judge/vote a film, whether it's positive or negative.

Been in similar situations before ... not being able to stand something that I previously liked, because of who it's linked to & how that person has interacted with me and/or the public.

However, for voting, to judge on personal feelings about the film maker is simply not fair ... as it also effects everyone else on the team that helped as well. In otherwords, don't let the arrogance of one person ruin the vote for everyone in that team, by judging with a bias.

I'm all agree with you Envision.

And Weston, really I don’t see the problem.
If someone thinks that the content of this ‘individual film discussion” can influence him, is simple, don’t read it.
But If someone can separate movies from their creators, he probably can find interesting the content of this threat.

Ok. And now, I tell you the way I feel movies. While I watch a movie, I am not thinking ‘what spielberg wants to tell me?’ for example, or ’What this movie means for Ridley Scott?’ Definitely, when I watch a movie, I’m not thinking about the ‘autor’, the ‘autor’, the ‘autor’...
In that momment I’m thinking about ME, ME, ME... And what is the meaning of the movie for me!
I don't mind the ‘autor’!.

I’m only worried about me and my EXPERIENCE watching this film. Because at the end, who cry, who laught, who feel this movie like something true is me and not the ‘autor’.
‘Autor’ is a concept that was created by the ‘nouvelle vague’ and the magazine ‘Cahiers du Cinéma’ ( 1960 more or less) but before this, a lot of great movies, classic and american movies of golden age, were directed by ‘workers’ like John Ford, Raoul Walsh, Frank Capra, David Lean, William Wyler, Fritz Lang, etc.
When the people of that time went to the cinema didn’t say ‘oh, let’s go to the cinema to watch a Nicholas Ray film!’
And now, they are 'autors'... those directors are great for their movies not for their lifes or personalities.

Conclusion: For example, I can say I love one movie but I also can think his director is a wanker.

I think that is exactly the problem of the plot of your short

everybody seems to be complaining about the flat story of your film. of course you feel offended because for you it has A LOT of meaning. but the problem is that the audience can't see into you and does not see what you see. all the audience sees is what on the screen. and i think the ONLY mistake you made was not to put everything you think about this subject on the screen. you have your own thoughts while watching it and we don't know about them.

your short is visually stunning and solid concerning the story.

macgregor you are the best independent cinematographer i know but you simply are not the best director i know (still you are a good director and nobody says that you won't get exellent one day).

there is a difference between the way of shooting a comercial and a motion picture. ridley scott had to learn that too. (sorry about sounding like a wiseass I'm sure you know that too)

congratulations to a great short film

I hope you'll do a lot more

Does anybody know why we placed the action in Antartica?

Maybe this is a silly question... but I have my doubts... there are someone that think is not necessary to put 'antartica.summer.the future'.
And I ask myself if is not necessary this title to know the action is in Antartica.
