And John, I also agree with you. I think in your end tidbit you raise the two most valid points. The fact that as filmmakers (or aspiring ones ;)) We need to appreciate it when ANYONE see our films and takes the time to comment, with positive or negative. AND that our opinions are diverse. I like Similo more than Odd Squad, but not as much as I liked We Are Not Alone. And I will tell you... we did a little "screening" at my inlaws house recently and they all seemed to like "We Are Not Alone" better... it was more engaging for them. And THEY are the audience... the average viewer.

Hello.

I didnt say my film was the BEST. I said it was one of the better. And i never said i expected to win.

If my words seem arrogant is because how you are reading my lines. I am as calm as anyone here.

For now on i will take what you said. We have a film that is not working and i will go with that.

Mac, it's not that your film doesn't work. Look, some films make millions, and tons of people love them, but some people don't. It's just part of life... you can't please all, and you have to go into the process realizing that.

For what its worth, Mac, I think you should try and do the 25 min longer version. You have something great here. I'd like to see where you go with it.

Yeah, uh, Macgregor, I'm curious as to why you are giving so much more weight to the few people that had critiques for your film than the 30 pages full of dvxusers who had nothing but glowing praise for it.

Your film wasn't my favorite, but it was quite good. I think you need to go back and read all of the posts again from the beginning. It would appear that the majority of people who watched your short really like it.

So, you have no logical reason to say that:
"For now on i will take what you said. We have a film that is not working and i will go with that."

Best of luck to you, Macgregor. Keep on filming.

Let's not forget that English is not everyones native language here. A lot of comments (valid ones) that are being flung out in an American vernacular, shorthanded for the web, might be read differently by Mac then say by Brice...

I agree with that statement.

And thanks MAc for claryfying the mood

And Macgregor. Your film is working. It rocks dude. I'd guestimate placing 1 or 2 the looks of things (That is a guess everyone; I have nothing to do with this Fest. It is Barry and Jarred's baby. I know N O T H I N G ! )

****. I'm regretting investing any serious thought into this after all this nonsense.

All style. No substance.

That's your film in a nutshell, macgregor.

And that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it, regardless of his personality.

And Kholi, DJ was just trying to make a point, not bash his film. Reread the post.

I'm quoting this from his post... ready?

"...if you're going to bash everyone elses film, I think yours needs a second look."

Tit-for-tat, am I wrong? He was bashing it based on the creator... the proof's in his words.

Look guys, if you want to get into a fight do it somewhere else. Let's leave this thread for a discussion of the film (good or bad).

Thank you, for a voice of reason.

let's go back to "similo" ......macgregor, you said you forgot the g35 in your car for one scene, which one is it? :)

I was just making a point. I said that because if everyone praises someone for their work and mac was claiming he thought his was the best... I really did feel that under that context, careful analyses needed to be made. I wasn't bashing on the creator; I was making sure that I was sure of my vote.

Perhaps on the second viewing impressions changed? Just theorizing.

Maybe we're underestimating the story. For such a simple film, it has sure raised its share of controversy ;)

So back to the technical stuff.

I know you said you used 2 1000 watt lights. Do you have any pictures of how they were set up? I know you said they were outside the window, but do you have a pic of it?

And secondly, not sure if anyone asked this, but how much of a field of view did you have shooting the car scenes? Did you have to shoot it pretty tight?

Yeah, I agree Matt. I also like your take on the difference between types of films regarding ambiguity. For me, it's the difference between a straight forward narrative and a poem-like structure where the theme is outlined, but the breadth and depth of the piece is left to find in one's own interpretation and imagination. Both clearly transport you into another world, but the poem-like film asks for your participation... (you said it better)

I love both types for different reasons. But (as I get older) I want to engage my own feelings and intellect in a film.

Macgregor, one person gave a long and valid (for him) critique of your short film, and a few people responded to the points he raised (some getting kinda personal) and thus, the merits of the film itself. Beyond that, this thread has been hijacked - maybe the topics should have been discussed in another thread ?, I don't know, I'm not a mod :), IMO.

You received MANY honest and intelligent critiques, on BOTH sides of the ledger. Please don't dismiss the positives, or not be 100% proud of the short you created. Like I stated much ealier, I would be chuffed (happy) to have created your film, and wouldn't hesitate to put it on my reel.

After you make a film, it's like sending your kid off in the world. Some will say its ugly, and some will say its beautiful. How you respond is the important part. Not the comments themselves.

Maybe we'll work together some day, and I'll buy you a beer and we can talk about the poetry of film. Or babes. Whatever suits ya :)

Cheers.

Edit : Damn my long post. Three questions before I can post ! Just so this stays on the film - I was curious to know if you made a Spanish (or other language) version of the voice over. You could get it into a lot of foreign film festivals.

As much as I like this film, can people please go out and watch some other films and give some comments to people who need some feedback to grow as filmmakers. This was an astounding peice of work but others need your help to get to this level.

Darkfader,

I'm at work, but as soon as I get home I will watch your film and put together a review and critique for you. I've seen your postings in another thread and understand your frustration. I would encourage others to do the same. That said, let's keep this thread focused on Mac's work.

Best,

Matt
