2012: Cyborg Apocalypse - Zombiesquid Productions

We spent 4 days shooting the intro and 2 hours shooting everything else...I thought it would be funny to put everyone through 3 and a half minutes of inaudible and mostly nonsensical dialouge. I say to myself "It would be funny if the hologram just rambled on forever!" and then that's what happened. Sorry. I'll do better next time.

ZombieSquid no need to appologive here .You set out to do a film for the Sci-Fi with an idea in mind and you did it .That's what counts here . doesn't it ?.
Sad only 55 members went and did a short .
My congrats to you and everyone who entered .

I liked the holographic guy. I liked the southern sounding accents in a scifi film. The motorcycle shot was great. I just didn't buy that it was some post apocaplyptic world. If the garage would have been dressed up slightly more it would have been more believable. Overall it was pretty fun.

Quick Disclaimer: I am avoiding reading other comments before rating each of the films, so I may repeat comments others have said to death.

When this film started I was immediately impressed with the production value of the motorcycle. In particular the shots under the bridge were particularly nice. Overall I liked the framing of the majority of the shots and was generally impressed with the camera movement.

Where you lost me was with the acting. The three guys looked right for the parts, but were pretty stiff in their delivery. The guy in the hologram seemed the most natural of the bunch, but I never felt full immersed in the story.

The hologram fx was fantastic, in my opinion. I liked how seamlessly it appeared to interact with the environment. As the camera moved around the image the environment/actors showed through the hologram. I also particularly liked the 3d quality it seemed to have. As the camera moved around the hologram it felt like a projection of an actual person, rather than a flat projection like on a screen. The ball/object hitting him during the transmission and his subsequent reaction were amusing, however I didn't see the ball/object the first two times I watched. I was confused what he was talking about with the, "...not cool..." bit until the third time when I finally saw something strike him. Perhaps if the shot were wider it would have been more obvious - again, just my opinion.

The story starts out good, with the fairly quick dialog interaction between the actors. But when the hologram starts I quickly lost interest as it became a long speech. In the future you might want to find a quicker way to get the information across, or break it up so it isn't all in one chunk.

My only other gripe about this project is that it seemed like the opening teaser act for a television show. In other words, when this ends, it is like we are going to commercial, but never come back. I know it's hard to tell a story in 6 minutes, but it can be done. You have the start of a story here, it would be nice to see it re-worked to give us more.

The "out of gas" bit at the end was pretty funny :)

Good job.

Larry

edited to add: After posting my review I went back and read the other reviews...apparently I fell for the trick like everyone else. I guess that's what I get for not pre-reading the reviews, but I wanted to give a fair review to each film. Oh well, great job then, I guess

Agreed. Don't feel bad at all. You finished a film, congrats. And so the joke didn't work for everyone (myself included), doesn't mean anything, you can't please everyone. You obviously tickled some people's funny bones here, that's a good thing.

Hey Squid!

Some of my .02 worth may be repeatative, but I'll share them with you anyway.

I really liked your opening montage and text scrawl. It set up a nice mood. The montage with the bike and the opening credits was nice as well. Again a real nice mood established.

When we get to the garage though, it feels like a different piece.

I like the hologram effect. Worked well. Cute joke in the dialogue there. Liked it.

And then it kind of ends. It was a little disappointing at first. In the end, I felt like it was a cute, for lack of a better word, movie. It made me smile. I was hoping for something more meaty from the opening scrawl but maybe that's what you intended?

The biggest negative for me was the music. It came in and out at odd times and the transitions weren't smooth. I liked the score, but not so much how it was used.

Nice job! It was fun to watch!

The opening was great, I liked the bike shots and the soundrtack was excellent. The picture was crisp and clear. The hologram was very well done but overall the story was really lacking. The conversation between the two guys in the garage was difficult to make out at times. Also, they looked a bit squeeky clean for guys who were meant to be fighting cyborgs. Maybe for your next film you can think about having a variety of locations, better sound equipment and make-up / costuming. Well done for making a film!

Hi ZombieSquid-

Nice job on this short. Much like everyone else here, I was totally impressed with your intro bike montage and hologram effects. You have some serious talent to put together cool shots like that.

I know you got a little frustrated with people not understanding your intent, which, I think you explained as an exercise in viewer manipulation.

I have to say that seems like a cop-out, given all the good things about this short. Go film those guys getting some cyborgs! I definitely liked your style and wanted more.

Good job. :)

I started watching this, and thought, wow this is good then lost interest becouse of the bad acting, it made me smile when 'ran out of gas' though.
