The cards are designed with enough speed for a 100 Mbps, real-time transfer and there is probably not enough headroom to transfer signficantly higher than real-time. With DVCPro50 or 25, the situation is obviously different, with realistic transfer speeds of 2x or 4x possible, and that is what is described in the announcement. It makes sense, given the state of the technology, today.

The current P2 USB-cardreader is fast enough for faster than realtime transfer. We got between 7x and 9x realtime transfer for DV25, so that would make around 2x realtime for DV100. These are realworld tested speeds. The bottleneck at the moment is the USB2.0 interface. When using a cardbus interface, transfer speeds went up to 12x realtime DV25. Then we hit the next bottleneck: the internal laptop drive.
This is why Pana is updating it's P2 cardreader with a Firewire-800 interface. USB2.0 has a max speed of 480mbps, but that's burst, not sustained. Realistically it reaches 240mpbs, which is a lot less than the 640mpbs of the P2 cards internally. With the firewire-800 interface it would be possible to ( theoretically) transfer DV25 at 25xrealtime, or DVCproHD at 6.4xrealtime.
