FCP 5 or 5.04 to capture to a G4?

I'm installing FCP 5 on my old/new G4 laptop (1.67ghz and 1.5 gig ram) and wonder if I need to go on line and upgrade to 5.04 or will 5 work to capture to a raid hard drive? I have 5.04 already on my G5 for editing.

PS Barry, any date for your book and DVD on the HVX? Tomorrow would be good.

I'd make sure to load 5.0.4 if for no other reason than to be current if you should have any problems. But you can capture fine with FCP5 on your laptop. I'm using the PowerBook G4 17" with 1.67 Ghz and 1.5 GB Ram, too. I've got 5.0.4.

Thanks Blane, I have two of the 15" G4's one for each camera, though I only got one of my cameras so far. I'm a bit nervous about going on line because I already did that with the G5 and well… you know that program and the computers set me back just under 10 grand and well… :)

I think I've got it upgraded on my :embarasse iMac :embarasse and on my laptop. I haven't even fired up the iMac in two weeks. It's old, I think it's only 800 Mhz or something like that. But I can certainly understand your concern. You should have NO trouble capturing with FCP5.

I read somewhere that Apple isn't like Microsoft and doesn't send out lawyers to sue your ass off if you, well you know… with a copy of very expensive software that you already bought once. But still I have no way of knowing if that is true or not. Anyway time, or perhaps someone here, will tell. Of course Steve Jobs could always just load up QuickTime pro with the right codex and solve the problem. Plus that would funnel more business to Apple and FCP, so it would be a win-win solution, for him! And us!

Damn, it takes a long time to load this into the G4, perhaps I'll do it tomorrow.

Well, the biggest problem I've ever had with having the software on two computers has to do with my Airport router. I can't open FCP on both computers at the same time. If I try I get a message stating that the licensed copy of FCP is already open. That kinda tells me that they realize you may have it on a desktop and your laptop, too. They just don't want you using it on both at the same time without buying another license. It's not really an issue for me anymore because I hardly ever use the iMac for FCP. It's just too slow.

I heard today that QuickTime PRO might be upgraded to handle the HD from the HVX. I guess we'll know after NAB. I'll hold off and see what comes down from Jobs on it.
