DPREVIEW closing April 10

Not surprising (and many others will eventually follow) but strongly hope that content gets permanently archived for people because it would be a shame to let it all disappear.

It will be reborn with a much lower overhead. Various Amazon/B&H/Adorama affiliate links still pay.

Or Amazon/B&H/Adorama can hire some of the DPR staffers directly. Those are big businesses.

lol, these guys know how to survive, I'm impressed.

...but, yeah, YouTube for everything. Doesn't have the same feel/forum as a dedicated site, but that kind of thing is a luxury these days and too much money probably shouldn't be spent on it (just do it on YouTube/social media).

Huh? Amazon bought DPReview in 2005. I thought they made the decision to shut it down.

They did and I forgot all about it. If I knew about it in the first place. Which I may not have. I wasn't in the loop at the time. But it was mentioned in the Sony Alpha Rumors' video, lamenting the DPR's demise.

FWIW, I think it's a bad move by Amazon, the declining photo-video hybrid sales notwithstanding. I think they should have reorganized DPR and made it an Amazon Prime streaming only site. I realize Amazon is cutting costs and laying off a lot of people - 9,000 to be exact - but there's a way to ride through the trough.

It's also a bad sign for the entire photo-video business on the whole. Smartphones took over the low end of the business and now they seem to be coming after the meat of the market. And very few businesses are adjusting quickly enough.

Companies are going to have dedicated AI sections everywhere to answer any and all questions about what you're interested in knowing wherever you're visiting. Obviously this has already started long ago in some places, but will be more common and advanced and do 90% of the job good enough rather than an entire site dedicated to it with a bunch of people running it and making content, salaries, time, etc.

Obviously you will lose that human connection and communication, but that's generally the fear moving forward for everything-AI.

Same with those news sites...Newsshooter, CineD - love em - but AI will cover everything faster before all of them can write anything about it.

People are going to be so deeply plugged into an AI matrix for everything feeding their brains with an imaginable amount of data.

Never-ending...it's not a world many of us will want to know, or maybe even recognize if still breathing.

Eh, these sites don't need need to write anything original now either. They could just rehash the PR emanating from whichever company provides the product. But the reason people went to 5D and DPR was precisely because they weren't just Copy&Pasting anyone's PR. And, after some sites will do it via the AI - which is not that different than what you get from a search engine anyway - things will revert to some form of originality and independence.

But it's likely to exist in a very consolidated shape.

I don't read newsshooter because they publish quickly. I read Matt Allard because he's incredibly thorough and brings his professional experience to bear. And he's honest and doesn't hallucinate

def, at least part of it - and at the end of the day, it's a niche, it's almost like a rock collecting site.

it's amazing information for those that grew up with that, but it's completely unnecessary for corporate Amazon to continue funding. I mean, it sounded like they might not even keep the site up at all.

He's one of the best with his writing/reviews, I once even told him that (but he is part of newsshooter, or did you mean you don't read CineD?).

Not entirely sure what you mean about reverting to originality. But AI generally seems to me like a conformity machine. That's the basis of how it produces seemingly human responses -- by predicting the likeliest output
