Is Canon getting ready to release new cinema camera/s? Big C200 Price reduction

Many dealers are discounting the C200 by $2k at $3500 and the C200B by $1.5k at $2500. Such a steal if you do not need 10bit. This seems to indicate something is about to be announced this quarter. Would you buy a C200?

The C200 is the first and cheapest canon camera without a loony xlr arrangement.

My further 'personal' specs are
reasonable AF
viewfinder to see in bright sun
inbuilt ND
..raw codec
HDMI does not stick out the side
..sdi
reasonably small
long lead for evf (gimbal use)

All over the C200 hits many many bells as really the cheapest 'proper'/A camera you can buy at this point.

The C70 evf sticks out the side and could clash with gimbals like my, movi, the onboard monitor is not really flexible enough.. therefore rendering it no an 'a camera'

The AF is probably dated on the c200 and it does not have 120-4k

For me the C200 is the best value 'A' camera available now and is certainly worth buying.

A modern C200 could be even better .. 120 and better af would bring it to 2022.

Canon EF and EFs glass is the best value used.. which the c200 fits of course.

I've been trying to sell my pretty much brand new B with like 9 hours on it for the last few months, but this latest price reduction will likely have me keeping it forever.

Anyone not looking to spend too much money and would like a solid combination of S35 - RAW - A/F - ND - I/O - and a generally extremely pleasing softly detailed cinematic IQ should absolutely be considering the camera, especially if one is tired of using stills cameras for video even for the simple fact of having your video camera look like a video camera.

And something may be announced, but the price drops aren't related. Cameras usually have a few cycle drops before they are about to be discontinued.

personallt I find what some 'professionals' go on location with to be a mystery

r5c - micro hdmi - not an A camera
r6i-ii -micro hdmi - not an A camera
c70 - bad hdmi position - not an A camera
all dsrl - no nd - not an A camera
bmc 6k - no af - not an A camera
bmc 12k -no af - not an A camera

c300, fx6/9 - much more expensive.

I've been trying to sell my pretty much brand new B with like 9 hours on it for the last few months, .

another 'problem' of the c200 is that
-producers are scared of raw (which is bs as the 265 canon codecs plyback worse)
-producers have not heard of/dont respect the c200

this may affect selling it or getting hired with it.

Obviously producers know nothing based on fact.

Ive been on location with my C200/movi working and in the van while the day was spent wrestling with a non functioning arri/ronin2 - the DOP spoke like I was offering him to shoot on a plastic camera.. nailing him as a fool in my eyes and throwing away the day or most of it at a cost of some 10s of thousands.

None of the other Canon C-cameras are being discounted, so this is a likely phaseout of a five year old C200. The R5/R5C are huge sellers and far exceed the C200 specs. Could there be a C200 MKII or C100 MKIV? I'd say, it's quite likely if Canon wants to take a shot at FX-3 and/or FX-30.

Which they definitely do.

this is what if find odd.. the r5c doesnt have real world specs that one could use it as an A camera.. the c200 does.

In a perfect production environment, many would be hard-pressed to see a difference in visual motion picture quality.

Besides AF, which is really so much better in the R5, the specs of the other cameras only far exceed it mostly on paper.

The CRL in the C200 is special. It was a proper cinema camera with cinema IQ.

I regularly use a C200 and an R5C as an A and B cam together. Sometimes with either one serving as the "A" angle depending on if I want something wide by shooting the R5C in full frame or if I want to go tighter and utilize it in Super35 mode. It's more versatile than the C200 in that way. It could even be argued that the image off of the R5C is better than the C200 RAW and certainly easier to get to a nice image quickly with the 4k XF-AVC. Which is fine considering how much newer the tech in the R5C is.

But in reality the C200 is what I'd consider a robust cinema camera and the R5C is very much still a hybrid camera masquerading as a cinema camera. I have no problem bringing the R5C along for another angle, as long as the C200 is there with its much better audio capabilities, better connectivity, better battery life, etc. I have a dozen little hacks and extra bits that bring the R5C on par with the C200 in those areas, but it's a jumbled, crazy mess that makes you realize that the C200 is still amazing.

And when you see what people have done with the C200 image over the years, it's MORE than capable of producing top tier imagery. It's only the ever evolving arms race to have 800 fps or 12k out of every new camera and the constant marketing hype of camera companies that might make it seem like the C200 can't get most jobs done.

But it's a lie.

I've happily shot on all of the newer cameras when they were provided at my old agency job (C300 III, C500 II), but I'll continue to ride my fully paid for C200 off into the sunset until a client gives me deliverable specs that it can't accomplish.

Forget HDMI. All you have to do is say "no SDI" - not an A camera.

my old agency job (C300 III, C500 II), .

the other reason I like the c200 is that is a great learner/spare/plceholder for the c500/300. All my bits that make my c200 fit, for example, my Movi, will work with a production company or rental 500 or 300 an i guess id get round the menu fast.

It is a legit point.. but to some extent with the (newishly affordably) wireless transmitters Big HDMI can work.. especially if the hdmi doesnt stick out the side but is well placed at the back (c200, fs7, zcam)

Of course move up to the next level.. fitting into the existing pipeline of a broadcast show.. sdi might indeed be a must have.

It certainly is kind of a best of both.. because iv been on set and my hdmi transmitter didnt work (24p pfs fs7) and sdi gave me the run down the jib that was esential for making the shots.

On my DP502 the sdi input was broken. Here the hdmi from the fs7 saved the day.

So I like both connectors (and running two cards.. not that the c200 does that properly)

Kindly requesting Alexa to be added to the list...no ND, no AF...an inferiority.

The arri is really its own thing. They are indeed mainly useless if you dont have a fully developed 1st a/c swinging focus ND and lenses. And a $10k pack of accessories. But of course when you do they fly high!

a fully built arri!

Occasionally, I use a Canon R for interviews and b-roll, will an R in 4k which is cropped match well with the c200 for interviews as an A and B cameras? How about using the C200 for conference presentations, what servo zoom lens you would use with it?

As I see it - if Canon follows Sony's example of repurposing the existing hybrids into video-centric cameras, they could use R7 as a base for an APS-C replacement for C200 and a competitor for FX30 and R6 MKII as a competitor for FX-3.

With a micro HDMI, naturally. Just to piss off SMM.

Ken, I have a C200B with your name on it...$2390 with an extra BP-A30 battery for all day power...insanity.

Once you get it in your hands and turn it on... :atigrou::happy::atigrou::happy::atigrou:

They would match well but ideally with the same settings and some post work (when necessary).

You don't have many options for servo lenses for that camera/sensor...pretty much everyone uses one of these two:

One would have to buy both to shoot conferences as some rooms are short and others are long. Not practical and would not spend that kind of money in 2023 on EF lenses.

These lower prices are tempting but not sure if I want to invest in EF as I mainly have RF lenses. If there is a nice servo zoom lens that makes sense for conferences at a decent price that might sway me :2vrolijk_08:
