Sony A1 gets 8k 4:2:2 10 bit update and more

Eh, might as well stick the latest rumors here.

Sony A7RV ought to be announced before the end of the summer and ship in time for the Christmas shopping season. It is expected to remain a photocentric unit, with mo' pixels, mo' pixels, mo' pixels (how many mo' isn't known yet but it might go up to eleven). Meanwhile A7RIV A is discounted down to $3,000.

Fuji X-H2 is supposed to be a 40MPX, 8K camera for $2,000. Personally I don't see it this low but I don't run a rumor site either.

And Nikkei published its own gossip that Nikon (Nikkei. Nikon. Nikon. Nikkei. Uma. Oprah) is pulling out of the DSLR business. Nikon quickly denied it. But, I assume everyone can read the writing on the wall. DSLRは死んでいま. (For those struggling with their third grade Japanese, DSLR wa shinde imasu)

Not going to be that low if the X-H2S - which just started shipping this week - is $2500.

Since Sony obviously pays attention to the video features in their A1 (hence this 10-bit 4:2:2 8K update), it gives me hope that one day they could add a 4K HQ mode similar to what the Canon R5 and R5C has. Not only does Canon have that, but so does Nikon in their Z9 which does it up to 4K 60p.

I have two Sony A1 cameras and they are incredible machines. They smoke my FX3 in resolution and in versatility thanks to having a downsampled Super35 4K mode. They also have a variable shutter option which lets you dial your shutter down to the decimal place for avoiding banding or flicker in video. The FX3/A7SIII don't have that. Add those things up along with the incredible lowlight performance, color accuracy that is arguably Sony's best, and the fact that it's an industry leading photography camera, and you've got yourself one amazing tool.

The only flaw that I've found in the entire camera is the pixel binned full frame 4K. It looks fine, it's just that it sometimes has aliasing/moire issues. Since the Z9/R5/R5C all have a downsampled 4K HQ mode, and because the A1 is clearly Sony's flagship mirrorless and likely will be for several more years, and because they obviously are paying attention to the video in it, I'm hopeful that they can give us a 4K HQ option. If they could do that at least up to 60p, then the A1 would be the best mirrorless camera on the market by far in my opinion.

With the new firmware 2.00 update, the FX3 just acquired the ability to load as many as16 custom LUTs, timecode sync support, a new improved menu layout, Cine EI Quick and Cine EI modes and a host of other features, allowing it to better integrate with the FX6 and FX9 and arguably making it the more capable cinema camera.

I hear it removes slog2, and the auto focus is slower now. Can anyone confirm or deny?

it loses slog2. who says the af is slower? I can't seem to find that anywhere!

I heard all this from a news cam op friend who's been using the fx3 as a bcam and told me he rolled his fw back, to avoid the hassle. Wondering if anyone else is having the same issues...

That’s very interesting, because Sony camera firmware updates cannot be reversed to an older version.

I updated my FX3 with the new firmware and used it today as a B-cam to my FX6 for a gig. I thought it preformed wonderfully, even with AF. There’s so many great features with this new update including some that weren’t even mentioned in the press text. It’s a much better camera now.
