Cinema EOS Announcement on 19th Jan - EOS R5C

CANON R5C | WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW FROM PREP TO POST (Vistek)

The Canon R5C has been launched with a great deal of fanfare and promise. Canon lent us the camera for a few days to see if it will live up to the expectations. We shot a short musical film with it, and we'll walk you through all the good & the challenging aspects of this camera as we cover each element of our shoot from prep to post production.

Levels!
I wish I had them on the C300iii

thanks for sharing!

do you think the video above benefited from 8K?

I'd say it benefit from an attractive artist, good lighting, nice location etc... I've used 8K precisely zero times on my R5. I'll try it on a the R5C and who knows I might find myself hooked but I think 4k XAVC is where the secret sauce is kept.

The review reminds me of Undone. Nicely done. Never called attention to himself. Who is he? He did a GREAT job! Hard to imagine anyone having questions about the R5C after that. "AF 80% when it works." Makes some noise. No IBIS is a feature, not a flaw? I think I may agree.

With the production values he said he could have made the video with any camera. Does anyone doubt that?

Self plug here, but I look at my U12K doing all of that with ease. Lens mounts, battery management, mounting points, SDI, video displays, audio, timecode, hand held or shoulder, frame rates, codec, recording medias, cinema color. MF 100% when it works, OIS. But not full frame. Not a mirrorless arrangement. Is that really a failure? I don't think so. It's not as heavy or unwieldly as people think.

I agree Tom. He was good. And agree about IBIS, but for stills it’s great and there is catch. It would have been nice to have the option of using it or not.

Was it all shot in 8K? [I didn't watch the BTS so I don't know for sure.]

But if it was - and I'm assuming it was - I can't answer that accurately because the master is 4K. And I also don't have an 8K screen for an 8K master (if it was available).

Now with that aside, do I think the video - if shot in 8K - benefited from 8K? Yes, I do. For the simple reason that the creators have the right to say their work was shot in 8K and that holds weight just as much as the opposite argument of "my clients only care about 4K and sometimes just HD".

As mentioned many times before, I'm not here to count pixels.

I want to own and operate technology with superior specifications. If my clients would like 4K, they will receive 4K. If they would like 360p, they will receive 360p.

But I will always want better and more, power and speed, although admittedly it may be difficult to keep up.

I'm not buying it though, just saying.

In a few months, they will probably unleash and flex some more mind-boggling paper ink for only a few more Gs.

Sony's next...after watching Canon, Olympus and Panasonic have some fun this month.

I just got my hands on the R5C in a little session with Carl fromProAV and Mehdia from Canon. No doubt in my mind, this little camera is staggeringly good.

So... ....who's ordered an R5C? I'm just deciding how to accessorise mine so I'm interested to hear how anyone else might be using and rigging the camera.

I had made up my mind the day it was launched. Waiting for it to be available. There are some situations where I will be using it barebones - without anything extra. Am wondering how to keep that USBC power bank for the 8k50/60p shooting situations. I would like to know what you guys are planning in terms of accessories

There aren't many ways to use it in a barebones set up. You either put the bank on the shoe or attach it to the side of a small cage or half-cage.

I used to use a PowerBase 70 in many cameras. If you could use it to power the Canon then that could be another very clean solution. The battery has a clever design with a tripod plate built into it. (Sits under the camera via 1/4-20.)

Will add 1.2 lbs but it's out of your way.

I'm currently awaiting budget approval but am setting up a new internal creator studio and planning on going with 2 C70 bodies and 2 R5C bodies with RF lenses and adapters for our current EF. I'm also adding a Komodo this month for our higher end shoots especially ones with spinning motion as I run the studio for a toy company.

Mostly, I'll also be using it stripped down but I'm going to treat it to a new lightweight tripod.

I'll still get a new cage, probably the small rig one with top handle. I'm definitely ordering the new CFExpress SE cards from AngelBird which are super cheap (compared to everything else). I already use these with my other cameras.

Good set-up Adam. That new firmware update makes the C70 a serious camera. Mehdia from Canon told me this morning they announced that prior to the release of the R5C so they would keep their existing users happy. She said they still got plenty of stick!

Canon has been doing some good stuff lately for sure. I was originally thinking C300III but for most of what we do a pair of C70's gets us what we need in a very compact and user friendly package.

I have a feeling their next cinema cameras are going to be really good. The $8K-ish ones.

Fortunately I'm all in on the RF mount to keep that door open, even just a tiny bit.

I downloaded the 8K version of "Short Circuit" and played it back from my HTPC at full resolution to my 65 inch 8K Q900RB from 6 feet away. It's 8K no doubt, looks tremendous. Most notable is the clean low light, but it was faultless in every way, especially when you consider it's only 8 bit 420 h.264 mpeg4. I have never seen 8 bit look this good. I don't foresee where the next cinema cameras from Canon have anywhere to go, it's that good. I'm tempted to say DR but not really, it was well covered, unclipped, and some of these scenes were wide DR. It's from raw, so you could make it look different or to your liking, but I think they have the look they were after. Again, very clean low light, likely processed some for NR but not unfairly so. In one scene, right after the lights went out and all there was, was light from the cell phone, I briefly spotted faint horizontal banding, but it was so minimal it never caught my attention again. I watched it play through beginning to end at least 15 times.

The specs according to MediaInfo:

8192 x 3484 (2.35:1)

Additionally, I was surprised how much you were able to zoom in on the 8K file on an 8K timeline. So much info.
