It's for VR180 or something. I've never even heard of that. I haven't really followed the VR thing. But it got me thinking about 3D again. I'm a fan of 3D movies and own a 3D TV and Blu-ray player. Which sadly in my bedroom now. Not the easiest place to watch 3D movies. I wish they would start making (passive) 3D TVs again. But I'm also a member of a facebook 3D Blu-ray group and one of the members mentioned they are shooting a small budget slasher film in 3D right now. Which everyone there is interested in buying a copy of. Smart I think to cater to a niche audience these days.
They're using a camera I never knew existed. The Sony HDR-TD10. A model about a decade old now and definitely consumer grade.
I know there have been other efforts like these in the past. Panasonic put out a couple all in one 3D lenses and even Canon previously with a 3D lens for the XL1 DV camera. I don't know how well any of these work(ed) and I have no idea how post processing or viewing of the footage is even supposed to work on all of this. 3D production is not something I've ever looked into, besides seeing the hug dual camera frankenrigs Hollywood productions have used, with two REDs strapped one under another.
But it go me thinking, of all times, now might be the best time to shoot 3D like that. With all these small 4K capable cameras like the Sony FX3 or even GoPros. Although maybe not the best time to show it.
I suspect that VR and eventually AR will help bring 3D viewing back. Clearly Canon thinks there is a market. Although as I said it would be nice to see actual TVs again. It would also be nice to see a 4K 3D disc format.
