New Music video - Fairweather

Re: New Music video - Fairweather

Loading... just wanted first post while i wait for vid

Re: New Music video - Fairweather

..i liked it. great job ! :)

IMHO ..should probably mix in some more wide shots with all the closeups though.. it feels a bit congested/claustraphobic after a while of all the ECU's

Re: New Music video - Fairweather

:o is that a GG adaptor on the camera I see? or are you shooting long-lens? also BT nice job on lighting..someone is a pro that lit that shoot ;)

Thanks. The only adapter I used was a .6x wide angle for the wides. The lighting was all done by me with gear that I've gathered over the years.

Re: New Music video - Fairweather

That was pretty sweet. Orange backdrop was cool—I liked your background motion toward the end of the song, with the curtain waving back and forth.

And call me shallow, but the "Orange" Amp head was way cool.

I certainly don't think of you as being shallow. I think it's hot too. The moving curtain shots were all green screened and animated in FCP.

Re: New Music video - Fairweather

Damn Bob

You never seize to amaze me.  That is one beautifully photographed  pice of work.  This is the kind of footage where you say "Film or DV - You decide!".   Awesome.

Only thing I have to say is what has already been said:

This screams for some wide estabishing shots in the mix.  In fact, a nice variety of Est Shots and Medium C.U.  I think it would help this along into perfection; and it is damn close to perfect.

Bravo!

BTW - The band is great! Love it!

Re: New Music video - Fairweather

Ha! I knew it was going to be good even before I downloaded it...

Bob, as usual, astounding work. I'd say the ECU style is a bit claustrophobic, but seems deliberate and I really can grow accostumed to it. I just wanted to comment on the production design, that is very elegant also.

Cool work, man!

Re: New Music video - Fairweather

Good point! Production Design seems to be one of the few talked about topics in here. This MV has one.

Even if it is just simply red/orange/gold curtains and carpet. This serves to really enhance the entire palette. The normal alternative is BLACK BACKGROUND. LOL

Re: New Music video - Fairweather

I hear you. I originally had some wider shots in the beginning but the director wanted a slower reveal to the wider shots. Our biggest problem was making something interesting in a room that's about 12 foot square. The idea was to keep some mystery to the geography until about half way.

Re: New Music video - Fairweather

Well, you achieved the mystery, as you say, until half way through.

An establishing shot of the lead singer sooner would be better in my opinion, but that is about the only criticism I've got. Bob, your rough cuts are better than my finals cuts! I really liked the mic, and the wide angle lens was very effective in filling in more space in that broom closet than is really there.

Re: New Music video - Fairweather

Half Bob, Half Amazing.
I happen to LOVE the ECUs...
IMO, it's an homage to video. No self-respecting or common-sense-having film DP would ever shoot that close, that often.

The guy almost looks like James Brown for a while, and by the time you really see his face...you kind of already know what to expect if that makes any sense...It's solid, man. I love the setups you chose.
How much was green? There's a point when the wide shot looks like it was assembled...like you shot each band member seperately and then comp'd them.
Whatever you did, it's magic, and I like it.
And I use commas in weird, places.
PEACE!
I hope it gets rotation.
Dude...not to swell your ego...but it was hot..the shots of the shoes, and the kick drum, and the selective focus...(was that green?)
Sweaty guitar player...
Kinetic. This video had a texture.

This obviously looks like it was a cakewalk for you. What would YOU consider a challenge?

Re: New Music video - Fairweather

great video man! has a really nice texture about it. i love that everything is used and abused...even the singer... i love that we dont get into the medium to wide shots until late in the video. those ECU's are cool!

peace!

Re: New Music video - Fairweather

I have to say bravo also - love those ECU's Im a sucker for that close up.
Any setup info on the lighting & lens's you used would be cool ;)
I think it really helped to bring the max impact for the 24p look as John mentioned - this will really f**k up the film heads out there.
Good Job guy - how long was shoot ? & what do the band think so far ? I know they will love it but, just curious since I have a music vid to get into very soon.

Only the shots with the curtain waving were green screened. These are temps until we get something funkier. All rack focusing was done in-camera. Trust me, it wasn't easy in such a small room. What would I consider a challenge? Shooting outdoors without blowing out the highlights!

Thanks again guys.
Shot it at 24P Advanced at default settings. Used the Century .6x wide a few times. The shoot was 1.5 days in their rehearsal space. On the wide shots we blew the fuses 4 times because of the additional lights. Here's the kit:

2 Medium photoflex 1000W softboxes
1 Lowel tota 300W
2 home depot work lights
3 Lowel 250W Pro lights
1 reflector
1 Lowel Omni 500W
Various gels and diffusers.
1 bottle of water to use as sweat.
Commodore Amiga monitor
earplugs
iPod for playback
4 tapes

The band hasn't seen it yet. I think they'll like it.

Re: New Music video - Fairweather

I liked the reveal of the singer's face - I'd maybe have liked it a bit earlier, you held tight for just long enough that I was *starting* to get a bit annoyed - and it seemed like that wasn't what you wanted. But regardless I can see what you were going for.

But when we finally pull back and see him, it's nice. It hits you almost, and it works.

And talking purely about the quality of the shots themselves, much less the motivation behind their selection, the video looks great. Very trendy lighting, and the whole video definitely had a mood to it. You obviously know what you're doing :D
Can't wait for the final cut!
