Editing avccam footage from hmc150 (long gop issues?)

Hey.

I'm about to purchase a hmc150, I've done some of research already but there are still a couple of issues I would like clarified:

1. I've heard that you can't cut on every frame while editing hdv long gop format, avccam is also a highly compressed long gop format - so won't this also be a problem with hmc150 footage, even when transcoded to ProRes 422?

2. How does the PH 21Mpbs mode handled fast motion compared to hdv? (which I've seen some really bad results from)

3. What are the transcode times for ProRes 422?

4. Will the 4.2.0 color space hold up to extensive colorgrading?

5. Coming from a dvx100a (which I loved), what other issues or concerns should I consider before getting the 150?

I'll be editing in FCP 6.0.5 on a macbook pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz
And I usually do allot of post on my projects, grading, filters..

Thanks

1. Transcoding to pro res creates intra frame footage and a 4:2:2 color space. Once done, you can edit pleasantly.

2. We shot fantastic sports footage, collegiate basketball games at floor level, with the PH mode at 24p and 60. No artifacting.

3. Transcode times depend on your processor speeds. But you queue in L/T window when transcoding. Close to RT transcodes to the intermediate format

4. You won't be working in 4:2:0 unless you go to AIC. Stay with pro res.

5. don't know

5. What I'd say is.. what took you so long? Panny has been doing beautiful HD for over 3 years now....

It will blow away your DVX SD and viola.. no digitizing. You can pop in a bunch of cards... 10 hours worth.. run out for the day come back and it's all on your system.

Thanks guys.

I've been told that transcoding to ProRes would be 2 or 3 times real time on my computer - which seems like allot.. I was hoping that going tapeless would result in a faster workflow, has anyone actually tried this on similar setup (macbook pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz)?

Thanks

I can't say for ProRes, but on my Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz laptop, converting AVCCAM footage to CanopusHQ takes about 2/3 realtime; an hour's footage is done in about 40 minutes.

Hey Xsado, what I meant on the Cow was 2 to 3 times FASTER than real time. I've since tested it with a stopwatch and it's almost exactly 2 times FASTER than real time. This is on a 3.06 Intel Imac converting to Prores.

Cheers

You should be totally cool on a Macbook Pro.. but on my macbook it's slow as hell. I tend to go over a buddies house and do the transcoding on his Mac Pro. It's really a PITA to use Toast on my G5 which is still my main editing station. If I land this next gig.. then I'm buying a Mac Pro for sure.

if you have a fast system.. like my buddies I've found it to take about 40 percent of the realtime.. which is pretty much what P2 would take on my G5...

Yeah I misunderstood that John, really seems like no other camera gets close in that price range..

Would anyone comment on which adapter they would go for:

Redrock encore (which you can get without flip module for hmc150 right?)
Brevis
Letus extreme

Thanks all.

Adapter for HMC150

Adapter for HMC150

I am extremely happy with the Letus35 Extreme bundle that they sell over at letus35.com. There is no vignetting and it is extremely sharp edge to edge with my canon ef prime lenses. The battery life is great too. I have also worked with the Brevis but I feel that the Letus is a much better adapter a far as value, picture quality, and build quality.:):)

So, with one of the new MacBook Pro 15", even the basic 2.53 dual core one, (plus external hard drive) I should be fine transcoding and editing footage from the HMC150?
