NEW DSLR HD video for 2009!!

I've been a frequent visitor of this lively and fun board over the last year, and as a D90 owner like many of you, I'm absolutely hooked on the prospect of new DSLR HD video product and development. So I finally decided to jump into this discussion with this breaking news from PC World's coverage of The 2009 Photo Marketing Association convention in Las Vegas.

For me, the stand-out news surrounds Samsung's HD release for 2009-
Here is an excerpt from the PC world article.
"Taking square aim at Panasonic and Olympus's co-developed Micro Fourth-Thirds System, Samsung's NX series of cameras will drop the mirror box found in traditional DSLRs but still support interchangeable lenses. The NX is billed as a "hybrid" camera designed to woo avid photographers who aren't quite ready for a full-on DSLR. Samsung officials kept mum about the NX series' features and specs, but monitors in the Samsung booth alluded to Wi-Fi connectivity and HD video with HDMI-out -- both features that the vast majority of DSLRs don't have. The first Samsung NX camera is slated for release in late 2009 with no pricing set just yet."

It seems that HD capability in DSLRs is becoming commonplace, and at the lower prices offered by the competition, I wonder will Nikon finally see to fit to make a few upgrades available for the D90?

Greetings, and thanks for sharing. Always interesting to hear what the competition is up to.

Samsung's previous DSLR's were just Pentax basically, so I find this very interesting.

One can only hope, but I truly hope this isn't going to retail with an off the charts price tag. Shooting HD with the DSLR options is the main reason I bought the D90, but if Nikon's prices start moving in the direction of the price tags associated with Prosumer HD video products, it sort of defeats the purpose for me, especially if Nikon continues placing handicaps on recording time, iso control and output options.

The D400 pricing should be similar to the D300 it's replacing, around $2000 US. I notice that Nikon are offering a $100 rebate on the D300. Sounds like they are clearing out stock to make way for the D400, it can't be too far away. Maybe we'll have to decide between the GH1 and D400.

If Nikon can double the bit rate, stop the overheating and provide manual shutter control it would be a kick arse camera. They would have to do it to equal the specs of the GH1.

If the D400 hovers right around 2 grand, then I'm definitely a buyer, just as long as the specs are improved as you stated.

Nikon really need to get it right considering you could probably buy 3 GH1's for the price of 1 D400.

Compression needs to be right too. I'd like a less noisy image for VFX work, as anyone would with any videocamera.

Such a shame the Samsung NX won't have a flip screen...... which makes the GH1 more tempting if there's not much between them in video quality... apart from the Panasonic expensive chipped battery issue :)

Jack,
You hit the nail on the head, at least for those of us in the world of vfx creation. I've used/tested my D90 in quite a few vfx situations, largely, compositing 3D elements with the plate and a bit of chroma key. The resolution needs to be much higher as well. But Nikon probably didn't factor in that any of us who would use the D90 for vfx.
