Mixing P2 and AVCHD in FCP 6.0.5

I'm new to this, but I'm working on a documentary that was primarily shot on a HVX 200A, and I am going to add footage shot on an HMC 150. Both are in 720/24p native.

Will it be an issue to mix DVCPRO-HD and Prores footage?

You should be OK.

FCP 6 will handle just about anything you throw on the timeline. The trick is to match your footage settings and sequence settings as much as possible to avoid having to render clips that don't match your sequence settings. If you want to conform all your footage, then ProRes would be a good choice of codec for the project you're describing.

The Log and Transfer utility in FCP has a setting option to convert the AVCHD into ProRes 422 upon ingest (not HQ unfortunately, but still ProRes). Look under import Preferences in the Log & Transfer panel and select "AVCHD Plugin -> transcode to Apple ProRes 422".

As always, test your workflow with short samples of your footage and see if it all works for you.

I appreciate the input. I've been trying to figure out how to transcode the P2 footage into ProRes, (Creative Cow has some really good discussions about ProRes), so I figured out how to set up Compressor to take the P2 files generated by FCP in the L&T and convert then import back into FCP. Seems to work pretty good. FC just repackages the DVCPRO HD files, so there isn't a real loss of quality there.

Is there a "better" or faster way of doing this?
