"MODEL / PHOTOGRAPHER" - an ELOQUENT GRAFFITI prelude – a film by SABI

interesting points you bring up, jcvr. really what this short does for the feature is set each of the characters you see on an emotional path, but those paths won't cross again in the feature. they have their own threads to follow. and it's interesting that you didn't buy the character as a model. i was hoping a lack of experience and totally amateurish poses would in fact convey that. i hope no one mistakes john t. wood's character for a professional photographer either. :) thanks for watching, loved the performances in your film as well!

and Chantelle, thank you. I admire your work as well.

oh no! the wife is on dvxuser! :-D

Zak, she called me up to tell me how much she liked your movie and I was like 'well log in and tell him'! On a side note, I think you might be confusing her with someone else, as she hasn't appeared on a DVXUser short ever, or even one of mine in about 4 years time (a sore point for sure!) but, she had one of the speaking roles that Gus Van Sant hand-picked her for on his movie 'Elephant'.

believe it or not, i actually was referring to elephant. i know you and i differ on its merits but i've seen it many, many (too many) times and greatly admire the entire cast, including your lovely wife. :)

oh, rock on! I forgot that you knew she was in it. She was originally cast as the lead bullimic girl and was going to have a ton of screentime, but they got ready to film and my wife is 5'1" and it was wrecking their steadicam shots...so they last minute canned her for that and made the new role for her. She said Gus and the producer were pretty apologetic.

She also had a role in a cool post-apocalyptic webisode series called 'Lady Wasteland', she's in episode 3 http://www.ladywasteland.com/

Anyways, I'll stop hijacking your thread for wife promotion :-D

I'll add on to my previous comments about your short, great emotional honesty, something very few here manage to do. It felt very, painfully real

Man, that was great. Acting, direction, photography. All great. and How awesome were the sirens at the kiss?

Good music too! I approve sir.

La Nouvelle Vague. You should be making films overseas.

You did an absolutely superb job. I love the lack of dialogue and the dialect of body language between two people. It is certainly lacking in many films made today, especially out of Hollywood because the general public will not tolerate subtle moments that linger too long. I, for one, appreciate it and enjoy the visual kaleidoscope (LA) you used as a backdrop during the unspoken flood of emotions on the rooftop. Very beautiful.

Tell your editor, she is a genius. It had an excellent rhythm going. Thanks, and I didn’t have to pay to see it.

Zak,

I just wanted to drop in and compliment you on the film! One thing I really admire is your ability to just let a moment/scene/emotion soak in. You are comfortable letting things happen on screen without having to doctor it up with a bunch of FX/crazy editing.

I know because I speak from personal experience! I generally get nervous watching a film of mine if I have more than 2-3 seconds without a VO, a swoosh or an explosion. :D I know some of that is just difference in personality/preference but I would really like to get to the point where I am more comfortable letting scenes/moments just take their time.

Very powerful.

Well done!

Daniel

This was sick. can anyone elaborate on what cam, adapter, lighting, and lenses were used on this short?

The short was beautiful... the story is clear... however somehow I was left wanting it to be more. I may have over hyped it in my mind. The initial rush of "let down" has sort of passed now so I can look at the parts of the film... Oddly enough, I have nothing but praise. The acting was really good. I think the direction was even better. The emotion of the scene, especially with little to no dialogue demands good direction and you gave it to them. Still, with everything being professional quality I am left with the feeling of it missing something. Then again this is loss fest and this might just be the best entry of all because it left me with that very feeling.

I loved the project but in a sort of strange way.

OK so again I couldn't just get away from this. I had to go back and watch it again. I need to figure out what I was missing. What I discovered it that the story was not missing anything. I was missing something. I had this preconception of there being some sort of scene in a night club or something happening with more movement. My bad.

The interesting thing is that even in my momentary dissapointment the story still shined through. I still loved it. I still enjoyed the subtleties of it. That says something more powerful to me than if I had just loved it from the get go. It compelled me to watch it again. That is good filmmaking right there.

Kudos.

Now take that damn camera into a club and shoot something for me already!

It's very difficult to separate yourself from the mass when you're wading in a similar pool as the rest. This work, as far as my limited experience extends, is all you and it's really easy to say....

This ****ing rocks. I dunno if I could ever pull off something so meaningful without the extra fluff and guff.

I'm very much a fan of the way you contruct your work Zak.

This was shot very beautifully. The film itself just didn't grab me the same way your other stuff has.

The male actor, he is pretty damn good (same fella from IFHY and H-of-N correct?). Both were quite good in this..

Just something about it.. I dunno.. just didn't do it for me.

Too bad cause I like just about everything about it.. dunno what it is..
