Collections vol.4: Mint in box

Okay, you win my vote. This is my favorite by far. Started out a bit rough, I have 1 or 2 VERY minor purely technical issues, but this cracked me up like crazy. The actor is HYSTERICAL! So funny. It hurt me to watch all the stuff be destroyed but it was SO dang funny. I also really enjoyed a lot of your lighting choices.

Seriously funny though, can't stress that enough. I'm so happy to see such a number of comedies this fest, they never get the credit they deserve.

On a final nerd note though, both of your characters are wrong. It didn't make the kessel run in 12.5 parsecs, nor 12 exactly, it made it in "LESS THAN 12 PARSECS"! Ah well my padawan, you will learn. :)

Great work.

OH!! A technical question. I am DYING to know this, how did you achieved the anamorphic bokeh?

We shot with an anamorphic lens :)
Borrowed a 50mm lomo square front anamorphic from a friend for another soot. Liked it so much we ended up buying a set of three lomo square front anamorphics for our red package.

Because we sot anamorphic wit a VER small lighting package a lot of the shots are a little noise. Just got a new noise reduction pass from the colorist and it's amazing!

... well... I knew it would come down to this. As much of a star wars nerd as I am, somehow this one slipped by me on set. you have no idea the amount of shame that I felt when I realized the mistake we had made. We discussed reshoots, scrapping the whole short, or even having a special footnote at the end acknowledging our grand error.

oy.... I guess I need to stick to should just stick to targeting wamp rats.... :)

I give you special points for noticing it. But to be fair... A parsec is a measure of distance, not time. Did Lucas make a mistake? Is this supposed to suggest that the kessel run some sort of route with multiple paths? Or was it just a mistake and han was talking about time? the world might never know.

Man I loved this one! 10 stars from me! I laughed at the awkward moments. Funny! I almost cried when he knocked all the toys down. I still have all my collectibles, but all locked up safety in my Attic. Good story and good loss!

This was hilarious. Great acting and writing.

I almost died when he tried to take her glasses and she said "Oh I need those"

Good luck!

Really happy you guys are liking it.

We're going to post the scene with TJ Miller and some general outtakes soon! get ready for some ridiculous stuff.

F-ing awesome man.

I really loved that. I was laughing out loud many times during it. I really enjoyed your cast.

Spot on sir.

WTF??? NERDS!!!!!! LMAO!!! Man, this was hilarious! Loved it! This to me is ingenious, because you took a simple concept and made it funny. Anybody could've come up with the idea, but you made it unique and funny. You're actors were great. Definately get this one out to some festivals. Oh, btw, I did hear some microphone adjusting at the very beginning. Other than that, a very sound, professional film.

SPOILERS:

Man, I was getting mad when he was trashing the toys and I don't even have a collection! Where'd you get all of those?? And the coughing kiss - LOL - wow.

Man, I was getting mad when he was trashing the toys and I don't even have a collection! Where'd you get all of those??

Once again... These were the toys that I collected as a child by saving money from raking lawns, mowing grass, shoveling snow, pulling weeds etc.

I didn't know what to do with them. They were sitting in my parents storage unit they got after their divorce - and the fact that my childhood starwars toys were sitting in my parents storage unit was way too much symbolism for me. I would have felt cheap selling off but i also didn't really want to display them or anything. I always sort of liked the idea of having a kid and then one day putting them all in his room and letting him decide what to do with them, just either go nuts and open them all to make one hell of a star wars battle or keep them in their box... but that would be a ways off. So for the time being I decided that the most meaningful use of them would be to incorporate them into a short with a message about them. It was sort my my 9 year old self buying a set of props for my current self.

There were certain toys that have value in terms of money but also in terms of emotion connections, those were sort of off-limits, but sometimes there are no rules in war...

It's true. It's the same thing that always happened in old sci-fi films, when they would misuse light year as a measurement of time when it's actually distance.

That was great in so many ways. Very funny stuff! Your actors did such a good job with the material. I like your composition and the editing was pretty tight. The Toy wall was such a great set piece. Great job.

The best part for me was, as a relative newcomer to dvxuser, i saw the film before i knew *anything* about it. So, i didn't see the star wars thing coming at all, which made it all the more surprisingly funny. Indeed, the lead is very very talented. And indeed, anamorphic rocks my world. You guys did a great job.

The cough-kiss was hilarious. Where'd you come up with that?

Really entertaining film. It's painful to see him destroy his toys, in a good way. Especially when you know she's going to like Star Wars.

The leads were both great. Not really anything bad I can think to say.

Yeah, the cough-kiss is one of my favorite parts. The lead actor is a great improviser and with this short we just mapped out the general beats and then the majority of it was improvised. Each take has a completely different path from getting from A-B. It can be tough figuring out what the best take is at times, but sometimes something like the cough kiss comes up and you have a clear winner.

glad you like it.

nice work -- my fave so far!
great composition, editing, acting and most of all story. love the concept.

i will pass this link on for sure....

The awkwardness, chemistry, and acting was wonderful. I connected with the characters right away.

I liked how you shot it.

It was both enjoyable and heartbreaking to see him bash his babies to pieces. I was amazed how far you went with it. I kept saying, "Surely not... oh he's going at it again!"

This scenario could only happen in a movie, of course, but it worked well, with a slightly predictable ending.

Overall, great work, the performances especially.

Funny! Only film that made me laughed out loud in this fest. You got it right. I started laughing the moment the female character said, "I'll keep these." Her glasses of course. You had me the rest of the way. A big thumbs up to everyone involved.
