Jumping the Shark, Nuking the Fridge...

Ugh. This one is hard to top. Never has a promising series ever had such a precipitous fall. Horrible.

Yep, I loved Highlander. Easily one of my favorite 80's films. There was so much potential to do some awesome stuff with a sequel.

I don't think we'll have to worry about that. :)

Everything looks very dark, so far.

I'm not too worried as it does look good from the latest trailer.

Ain't that the truth. I've never forgiven the franchise for that. :Drogar-Angry(DBG):

As much as I am against rehashing old film franchises, the Alien series has the potential for a great reboot with a new protagonist if it were done in the style of Alien and Aliens.

I think the problem with Highlander is much the same as with the Matrix--if I may quote from the former "franchise:"

"There can be only one."

A lot of potential "franchises" have exactly those sorts of precipitous falls when they take a movie that stands alone perfectly and attempt to make it into a franchise. My opinion is that there was no need for a sequel to either Highlander or The Matrix, and I'm sure we could (and will :D ) come up with a lot more examples of movies that didn't need a sequel...

The Alien series jumped the shark at the beginning of Alien3 when they killed Hicks and Newt, off-screen no less!

On one level, I agree with this. On another (and it's odd that this should come up because I was just talking about Alien 3 today at work), given that Alien kills off everybody but Ripley, I can forgive Alien 3 for doing the same retroactively to Aliens. What I can't forgive it for is failing to follow up on that with a better movie. :) Alien 3 had the potential to bring things back to the original, a more horror-based exercise in thinning out a cast that didn't have the ability to fight back, but it just never went anywhere interesting...

Yes, but Highlander 2 was SO bad on so many levels it was like a kick to the face, stomach and balls. From the writing, directing, acting, special effects it was just a horrific turd. But yeah, it probably wasn't a good idea to do a sequel. Matrix I think they could have done something with, they just didn't find the right angle.

Followed by messy decapitation.

C'mon, it's an immortal-swordsmen movie where the villain's name is Katana, for pity's sake. Whaddya expect?

The original movie was good, I'll give it that. But everything that followed it was utter garbage, specially the last one, End Games. The second movie already shows Connor is the Last Immortal, but then it is Duncan in End Games. There was also another Highlander with Adrian Paul on SciFi, that made no sense in the story continuity. Have they even heard of continuity, or is sequel the only one they bothered to learn? No, I'm not a fan of the movies, but the TV series was great for the first several seasons, but it too Nuked the Fridge.

Oh man, the series was way better than the movie(s), with more details to Duncan's history. Each week you would visit a specific time and place in history and his life, meet his rival, watch him kill former rival. Next!

I always wondered how many fans injured themselves or others, with the 'collectible' swords, etc they hawked during commercial breaks.

Not me... my incident happened well before I discovered the show, and it wasn't one of those "collectible swords".

Prarie Dogs? Nahhh those were cool- In fact, the whole Nuke scene was best part of Indy 4- at least the most creative and original. The rest felt like it was in the wrong period (30's instead of 50's)

Like most bounty hunters, Timur Civan is my kinda scum- not only cause he DP's kick ass DVXUSER entries, but because he KNOWS that Han shot first.

He doesn't question it- or whine about it, or BLOG about it- He KNOWS it, to his core, same way I do.

I don't have to go around telling people on the street my opinion either- Why? Cause my Construction Foreman and Co-Exec of our studio AKA my best friend has the t-shirt I bought him for Christmas a few years back to prove it. If they wanna dispute his "Han Shot First" t-shirt- they can answer to us both.

Indy 4 vibe- Still late 30's VIbe to me...

Indy 4 vibe- Still late 30's VIbe to me...

I hear ya Capt Q- But watchin act 2 and 3 of INDY 4 I am reminded of early Indie- like pre-world War II INDY one vibe...

...even though #4 had 50's commies, and the bomb, and Dad-EE-O stuff from that La Boof guy or whatever his name is, once you hit the jungle and ACT two, it still seemed like they were running the same gags, same "cliff edge OMG we almost fell" scenes, same truck-window-shield smash in punch fest scenes, same everything from RAIDERS- so the whole time, my brain kept ignoring the #4 costuming, period setup etc, and kept thinking it was set in same time period as Indy one. Even though I knew it wasn't...

Maybe it was just me... does that make sense? I dunno.

Indy in Fridge and Shark jump? NO WAY

Indy in Fridge and Shark jump? NO WAY

I just went back to beginning of thread- I gotta respectfully disagree about Indy 4 and fridge- yeah, far fetched and all, but to me it was only original thing in flick that I thought was kinda cool.

I mean, this is the same dude who finds ARK of covenant and Fountain of Youth (AKA holy grail)... so not so far fetched the hiding from rads in Fridgidaire bit.

Plus, the last time one of the shorts I made took some heavy critical flak- that's exactly where I hid, till the oxygen and beer ran out...

I dig your sig, bro:

"Ah, Kirk, my old friend. Do you know the Klingon proverb that tells us revenge is a dish that is best served cold? It is very cold in space..."

Here is my response:

"Ahhh... he tasks me. He TASKS me."

Best friggin line EVER... One of my ALL TIME FAVE movies - definitely Top Ten... right up there with Blade Runner, Close Encounters, Raiders, Raising Arizona, Butch & Sundance, STAR WARS 1+2, Predator, The Sting, and Steel Magnolias.

OH SHI-IIITTee! Did I say Steel magnolias OUT LOUD? Crap. I meant umm, Magnum Force- err Star force- uhhh, something or... yeah. Crap.

Some stuff is timeless, and some folk still do the same stuff over and over. Cliffs have been plaguing man for millennium. I for one, like to avoid cliffs... which is just one of the reasons I live in Florida :)

The problem with Highlander is that the first movie eliminates the possibility of a franchise. He says at the end, he can grow old and die now. Live a normal life. Presumably, no longer immortal once he has the prize.

P.S. - That prize is a little lame.

I agree, and then in the fourth movie, he dies at Connor's hands. Holy Incontinuity Batman!

Well, maybe for a mere mortal it would seem like nothing. But now ha can be normal, and not have to fear being viewed as a monster. He can finally settle down with one woman, grow old with her, have children... Ok, maybe you have something there.
