Thought about the RED SCARLET, but got the HMC150 instead

I've notice that more and more people are picking up the HMC150, but I was curious to how many came to the decision on buying the camera?

For me, I had the HV20, and absolutely hated exposure locking all the time to get grain free footage. Then when the Scarlet was announced, I could wait to get it, but never knowing when it was going to be release put a damper on that thought. But still struggled with the idea of purchasing the Scarlet because of its price point was so attractive.

Then battled with the idea of getting the XH A1, but wanted to move away from the tape-based format. And I thought the XH A1s was a joke of a release.

Now that I have the HMC150, my thirst for the SCARLET is almost nonexistent. I really need to stop focusing on what camera I wanted and just get out and shoot. I'm never going to get better at cinematography if I didn't film anything.

Now all I worry about is how much hard drive space I have left.

I was all set to get the Sony FX1000, but the rolling shutter of CMOS made me focus in on the HMC150. Plus, for $3200, there just isn't a better camera out there for the price.

I should be buying my first one in the next month or so.

I came to my 150 because the price of the EX-1 was too much for what it offered over the 150.
I looked at many other cameras including the 170 and I read about the Scarlet but the SD card and the fact that the lens and sensors are the same as the 170, I had to take a chance on the 150.

I figured one of two things would happen: People would poo poo it because of the AVCHD codec coming from the consumer market or it would be a real steal at this price.

I think it's a steal but there are some who poo poo it too.

Does anyone here really believe that Red will have a real Scarlet on sell within the next year and a half???

I'm such a rolling shutter snob now that I don't have to deal with it. :)

I didn't even think about getting the 170, but when I heard that the footage of the two were VERY close in quality, it made me feel better about getting the HMC150.

It's hard to tell about the RED. They have proven themselves to care and put out a good product. You have to look at RED ONE and how far it has influenced the industry. No doubt if/when Scarlet comes out, it potentially can be big, but for now, I'm pretty happy with the HMC150. Too bad I can't say the same about my footage. HAHAHA.

I'm hoping more and more people with post up more inspiring HMC150 footage. Proof is in the pudding.

I believe Jim Jannard will not disappoint when the Scarlet is finally released.

I believe you are probably right, but I needed a camera now, not one or more years from now

No doubt Scarlet will be amazing but I wanted a wide angle, decent zoom good low light, xlr ports, tapeless, cheap media, easy to hold and operate, I could make an epic with either one. I still believe Scarlet wil be much closer to 4500 with what you need not to mention the cost of the cards. Still an awesome camera no doubt but the 150 can do amazing work as well.

HAHAHAHA, You're either the laziest poster, or funniest. Or both for that matter. Truth be told, had someone else wrote this post, I probably would have done the same you did DFM. HAHAHA. Good one.

i recently got the HMC150, but i am still interested in the scarlet.

i am curious to see if its CMOS rolling shutter produces the infamous rolling shutter artifacts and wobble.

i am also curious to see the workflow and which NLE's it can be edited on smoothly.

i am hoping sony vegas can edit the red raw files smoothly when scarlet comes out.

if scarlet doesn't have rolling shutter artifacts and can be edited on vegas i will get it. the RAW format is the main reason i am attracted to it, and the 3k resolution.

i will not get the S35. instead i will get the 2/3 fixed lens for a fraction of the cost and use my SGPRO to achieve the same 35mm effect as the S35 for a mere fraction of the cost. plus, i am weary that S35 will look "too" digital. i love the SGPRO because it adds natural and organic grain and slight softness which replicates film emulsion extremely good. i am not looking for a super clean digital HD image. i hate that look.

As Barry has mentioned and I echo.. Get what is best for you NOW.. work and earn money and then get something else when you need to. My 150 is paid off. I had 2 days of work this week and it's paid off from those 2 days alone. This was also for a national/regional video rollout campaign both broadcast, in-store, web, and at-home media presentations. They could have shot it on the RED, F900 or whatever they wanted, but for 1080 presentation... the 150 is kickass. The Red downconverted doesn't really look any better or sharper than and EX1 or such. If your final delivery medium is 1080 or below, shooting higher res will help with compositing and a few things.. but won't be signifigantly better.

I hope the Scarlett is great but I'm not going to be a fan boy spectator. Won't comment upon the rumors, read the posts and or speculate until it's out.. being sold.. and has real world proof that it rocks. Till then it's just wasted energy IMHO

uhhh, while I agree with the idea of not buying more than you need. the red downconverted is definitely better looking than the EX-1. I say this having owned an ex-1...

Completely agree with you there. I was stuck not knowing what to do. I had saved up for the Scarlet, but couldn't wait any longer for it to come out. I got the HMC150 and have made money with it. I hope on making more money with it. Granted, it's not the easiest thing to do, but I believe in myself to keep working hard to get there.

When I only had the HV20, I should have been shooting like I do with the HMC150, but I didn't. I blamed it on not having the right camera, but that was far from the actual truth. I was kidding myself. Instead of shooting to get better, I was researching about the Scarlet and other cameras. (At least that was the excuse).

Jim Jannard posted once: Buy a Scarlet. Use everyday. Shoot great footage and post.

Well, I love what he's doing, but I'm going to ignore the "Buy a Scarlet" part and do the rest of what he posted (Although, shooting great footage doesn't come THAT easy either).

Dang...I'm going to print this up nice and frame it...

Once I decided I had to have an HMC150, my GL2 just collected dust...
Now that I have one, its time to walk the walk as it were.....no excuses...

Laziness probably fits the best.......

I have a feeling we're not the only ones with this story

What kind of gigs are you guys getting which allow you to pay off the camera after only 2 days? Thats amazing.

The title is rather funny.. Thought about Scarlet but got the HMC instead.

It's like saying "Thought about a rocket booster jet pack, but I got an Accord instead."
