1k fresnel tungsten or 1.3k flo.

I do not own a 1k light yet and my money is running low. I was wondering if you had to choose one, which would it be. This would be for key or fill. 1k arri Fresnel shot through diffuser or 6 x 55 watt Coollight which is equal to 1.3k watts.

Which do you tend to use more, soft light or hard light? If you say hard, remember, you can always soften up a hard light but you can't make a soft light hard. And, we have the new 24 x 24 softbox kits for 650w and 1000w fresnels which includes speedrings.

I would opt for the 1k fresnel myself, but that is just my personal taste. For me, a fresnel of any kind generally gets more use than a flourescent light on set. I just consider them more versatile.

That being said, there's not right or wrong answer, and a flouro fixture has many advantages over a tungsten fresnel, the main one being less power consumption and less heat output.

yeah I keep bouncing back and forth. the fresnel is more compact and versatile but the flo is just so much more cooler and doesn;t need to be diffused. Ahh.. Richard, are you planning on a CDM or HMI equivalent?

The needing to be diffused part is precisely why I would choose the fresnel. I can diffuse it, or not...It has a lot of punch when I need it, but when bounced it can be incredibly soft. I can control HOW soft the light is. With a tungsten fixture, you're starting with a "base" level of diffusion, which of course you can diffuse more, but you can never make it hard.

It's all a matter of taste, but if I had a choice to light a scene with either a fresnel or a flourescent fixture, I'd go for the fresnel 99 out of 100 times.

Of course, there is the argument that you can use different color temparature tubes in a flouro fixture rather than cutting light output of a fresnel through gels.

Yes we are planning a 400w CDM fresnel this year--in the 1000w size fresnel. That would be a little more output than a 1000w but thats a good thing. I hope it could be out in 3 months but everytime I try to guess, reality and other's schedules get in the way.

estimated cost? I assume this would be a lower cost cold-strike like your 150cdm offering. I'm guessing around $650?

Fresnel, cause you can silk it if you need soft light. A bit less power but a ton more flexibility and reach. If you need daylight then you might consider the kino cause the 1k fresnel will be more like a 650 after full CTB. But even like so you'd have more reach... you can spot and flood a fresnel, silk etc... the kino is a kino... you can sorta flag it etc, but light mostly goes all over the place with practically no control.

We'll see. Yes its cold strike, but will be a bit more than $650. The bulb and ballast is much more expensive than our 150w. Its too early to say though and it all depends upon the deals we make and the quantities we make too.
