1080p and 1080i video from HMC150

I am a new hand, I tried 1080i and 1080p formats, 1080p looks a little like slow motion. I don't want to try 720p. Based on the experience from you guys, between the original 1080p taped from HMC150 or the deinterlaced 1080p (deinterlaced from 1080i using non-linear editing system), which one looks better when any other possible variables are kept the same?

Thanks!

Progressive always looks better to my eyes but I have seen 1080i “done right” which blew me away in terms of how clean and smooth it looked.
But I would not use 1080i and then deinterlace when I have great progressive camera on hand.
There are different types of deinterlacing but every one that I've used always makes the video softer – look like it has lost resolution.

I'm trying to understand the first part of your post, are you saying that when you play back 1080p it looks like it's in slow motion or are you saying that the play back is not smooth [jerky, stuttering, hanging on a frame or two for a split second]?

Hidef1080:

Sorry for misusing the word, I mean it does not look as smooth as 1080i or 720p (which is 60 frame per sec). It is somehow a little jerky. 60i instead looks fantastic and smooth.

Right off of the top of my head, I'd say that your computer may not be up to the task but I don't know that for sure.

Can you post your specs like what type of computer and CPU and how are you playing the video back?
Are only seeing the slower playback in your editor?
And what editor are you working with?

Thank you.

Thanks, I have no problem in playing HDV, WMV or mp4 based 1080 video, or 1080i video from my HMC150. I suspect the 30 frame per second is to blame. I used 720p, video is very smooth, even when I use Western Media HD player to play original AVCHD video file, 1080p appear to be a little unsmooth (maybe more accurate if I describe this to be film like, especially I hook the Camcorder to my Samsung 1080p LCD using HDMI cable). I can post my video, why can I upload the huge AVCHd file?

I usually convert AVCHD to mp4 or Quicktime mov format using VoltaicHD, then do the editing using FC Exp 3.5

I usually tape using 1080p, but if there are lots of motions expected in the video, I try 720p instead, but I always prefer the 1920x1080 resolution.

No, the HMC150 shoots 1080/24p as 24fps, no 1080i involved. The 1080/30p is carried within a 1080/60i data stream but the frames are flagged as progressive, so that's a case of "a difference that makes no difference."

The Scarlet will be able to, whenever she comes out. Hopefully one of the big 3 camera makers will do it soon but I doubt it.

Both the 150 and 170 use a 1080 60p signal for the initial image which then becomes either 720 24/30/60 or 1080 24/30 or 60i.

Neither camera will record the 1080 60p however.
