There's a light at the end of the tunnel, and it aint no train...

This has been available for quite some time and works with any NLE that imports MXF files from p2 based camcorders.

the AVCHD to DVCPRO HD transcoder software downgrades the original 1280 x 720 footage to 960 x 720. you lose many horizontal lines of resolution resulting in a worse picture quality.

i stick to editing in sony vegas 8.c because it handles AVCHD natively and very well. i work from my original MTS files and lose no quality whatsoever

it does for me. i haven't had one single glitch, not one single problem with handling AVCHD in realtime. i just keep the preview window resolution set to "preview" or "auto" instead of "best" and i can preview in smooth 24fps.

what are your system specs?

i have 4gb RAM and a 6600 core2duo. my video card is a geforce 7900GS.

But Vegas wont handle files from Panasonic cameras. I have 8.1c installed, this will handle files from Sony and Canon cams, but wont have anything to do with Panny files.

Does for me...

I've edited hours of clips from Panasonic GS250s on 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0, plus several .mts files from a hmc150 in 8.0c and 8.1.

Handles it just fine.

Do you have the panasonic codecs installed?

BTW...Vegas Pro is either 8.0c, (32bit) or 8.1, (64bit)...there is no 8.1c

Let's keep it real here folks: Vegas does handle 1080i with no problems, but I guarantee that once you start shooting Panasonic branded 21Mbps AVCHD in 720 60P/50P you will find that the footage WILL stutter making editing, real time preview and application of filtering or effects a real PITA with the stuttering coming out in the rendered file as well. This is especially true if you're trying to get nice over-cranked slow-mo.

This is a known problem with Vegas and it matters not how fast your computer is (I have 3 machines from HP Core 2 Duo up to a monster PC with Intel quad core and they all behave in the same way with Vegas even totally crashing at times. Editing 1080i is no problem what so ever.

Yes 8.0c. Dont know what we are doing wrong over here, but there are a lot of folks with the same problem, ie, no one can get 150 clips to work in Vegas.
I am having success with Edius 5, using Canopus AVCHD2HQ converter. Think I will stick to this.

I downloaded the trial, and tried it with 720/24p

First of all there are no presets for AVCHD that I could locate.

Second, I tried to create a custom preset and the footage basically didn't play.

I'm having no problems using Vegas Pro 8.c with AVCHD coming from my 150 outside of the playback in the preview being “somewhat” jerky.
Outside of that Vegas has done very well with my 150.
I only shoot 24p or 30p in both 1080 and 720.

I also got NEO Scene right before I dumped CS3 in favor of Vegas and Vegas has no problem with those larger NEO files either. Playback with NEO in the Vegas preview is smooth as standard DV.

Vegas does work with AVCHD for me and I am not on some super computer.
A laptop in fact.

Hidef1080, let me re-clarify: we're not saying that we can't edit AVCHD in Vegas. We can edit the 50i, 60i, 24P, 25P & even 30P streams with no real issues, however, try over cranking or speed ramping using 50P or 60P and tell us that everything is 100% in Vegas. It's kind of like driving a Porche that's speed limited to 20Mph... what's the point?

Regardless of your PC specification, Vegas simply cannot handle Panasonic's 720 50/60P high GOP codec. This might not be such a big deal for the amateur or weekend hobbyist, but when your only source of income is from getting work completed on time & meeting client delivery schedules, all of this farting around with transcoding & intermittent NLE crashing is detrimental to good business.

i disagree.

i edit 21Mbps AVCHD in 720 60P and my footage did not stutter during editing or real time preview, and that inculded filtering, effects, text and color correction. rendering went fast and without a hitch. and my PC is not a monster, everything in it is at least 2 years old and the specs are average for HD video editing.

i don't know what specs you have (or what version of vegas you have) but everything you listed works great and fast for me without any stuttering or problems.

i use the "HDV 1280 x 720" preset

make sure to set your preview window to "preview auto" or "draft" instead of "best". also go to preferences and make sure dynamic RAM is maxed out

Oliax - who ever you really are, you should count yourself one of the chosen ones, because most peeps here will tell you that 50P/60P is a dog to work with in Vegas. Only two weeks ago I replaced the Ram in my quad core, wiped and re-installed a fresh copy of XP with Vegas 8c and it has made no difference to how it handles 720 50P footage, still stutters & shows frames out of sequence during preview and intermittently crashes during render. I've tried all of the usual increasing/decreasing ram preview values, smart render disabling, rendering thread reduction etc... at the end of the day the problems are still there and we're still being ignored by Sony Creative Software.

You are indeed a lucky one!!

does anyone know a program for PC that i can transcode my 720 60p footage to avi or something that will work with sony vegas 9.0? that seems to be the only frame rate that doesn't play right in vegas.

Hey Strobey, I've started using Canopus Procoder because the process is fast especially on multi-core machines. The only time I have issues with it is when the files are larger than 1GB but it's still better than going down the DVCProHD & Raylight solution - especially when you have lots of projects coming in weekly that need to be turned around quickly.

I use Vegas 8.0c. On my laptop it works OK, but there were a few clips that had issues. I moved to Raylight, but more recently I've been converting to DNxHD codec like this. Seems to be great quality and fast to edit at 24p.
