SGPro Blade Review

Questions:
Has this been tested with an HPX170 yet?

Is this the same SGblade that Bloom and everyone else is talking about here?

Can someone break down the price difference between the the sgblade and the Letus Extreme after you've bought rails and all other necessary accessories? I'm new to this and there seem to be tons of "hidden" costs when purchasing an adapter.

i got my blade and have mounted it on my hpx171. With 24mm lens i can see
that edges are not so sharp as center for sure, but not a big deal really,
will test monday or sunday, no time now...

for now, here is my rig, with all zacuto, don't you just love it? :)
and a set of lenses 24 2.0, 50 1.4, 85 1.4 and 80-200 2.8.

Big big thank you for dvx user luckystudio13 which shipped me to europe

Examples of wide angle footage would be appreciated to determine the amount of resolution loss at the edges. I know someone round my way looking into the Blade for it's "ultimatesque" value but is concerned about Phillip's report of severe edge softness from his unit.

Thanks guys!

This may be a dumb question but will a followfocus allow you to adjust the focus of an adapter without having to use a different lens or physically move the camera's location?

You cant adjust focus of an adapter as there is no focus ring in that thing. You can use a follow focus to adjust the lens that you connect to your adapter. You can PM me for more questions if you wish.

All a follow focus is is a geared wheel that allows you to turn the focus of a lens with having to touch the lens itself. If you look at Thomas Riuka's photos above, that is what the big black/white knob on the side of the lens is.

To be fair, Philip never reported that the blade had "severe edge softness".

This is what he actually reported:

I would say edge sharpness is better on the LEX with EX1 achromat than the blade. But then the blade lets you stop down...edge sharpness is fine with the EX1 and Blade if you stop EX1 down...limiting if you are low light of course. But this is mostly on the really wide lenses...

Also, you have to take into account that he was using his zoom at 17mm in many of his shots.

Sorry, you're right. He never actually says "severe edge softness". I assumed that if it was worse than the Extreme w/Achromat then it was severe or unusable. Opinions differentiate.

Which is why I'd like to see more examples.

I use a very terrible Zoom on my unit sometimes, Tamron 17-35mm when I can't grab the Nikon 17-35mm and that lens actually is still useable across the frame. That's the Ultimate, though, and a different camera.

Even more reason for more wide-angle footage to show up.

Hi Tomas,

very nice rig!

I'll be ordering the blade for my HPX-172. I have initially plan to order the Shoot 35 rods with it but I have since change my mind for the Zacuto instead. Expensive, but I reckoned it's a better investment and it mounted the 'snorkel up" position nicely.

Can you advise whether this Zacuto package is good to go for the HPX-172. Just making sure I order everything correctly to prevent extra freight charges. I'm in Asia.

DOF Docu Baseplate Kit Includes:
- Universal Baseplate, V3
- Z-riser
- (2) 3.5" rod extenstions
- Lightweight locking lens support (Is this necessary ?)

thanks

Tarkovsky,

lens support is not necessary if you order bracket coming with blade, which
fits perfect to zacuto rails, so no need to buy expensive zacuo support. As for
other zacuto equipment, you won't regret it, also i suggest you get zacuo follow
focus gears (plastic stripes for putting around the lens), it's way better solution
than having a big plastic ring fixed with a bunch of screws...

as promised, footage from me coming tomorrow!

The achromat is apart of the 'Connection Kit' rather than the SGpro or SGblade itself. The Non Flip Tube & achromat now used on the SGblade had been shipping with the SGpro since October/November. Our new FLIPmodule & achromat started shipping at the same time as the SGblade, SGpro orders were shipped with the older SGflip module & achromat.

Philip,
How did you get on with the filming today?

Went well.

Had to dump tube and go with flip as couldn't get focus on GG with EX3. Wayne assures me you can. I just spend ages trying to and gave up. Was running out of time after spending almost an hour changing to Roto2. It took so long as this was my first time. Had a few problems, some cat based, some dust based, some motor wires come loose based. To be honest there is no need not to use flip anymore. They are affordable, are all of exceptional quality, Letus, RR, Shoot35, Cinevate and they lose hardly any light. No more stupid magnet tricks, upside down monitors or extra processing in post. JUST GO FLIP!!!

I def prefer the RR2 but will tell more later. Just uploading footage and will cut it into another short then post a review on my findings...
