EVERYTHING'S EVENTUAL: A Stephen King short story adaptation (Production Diary)

I'm sure it'll come soon, but might as well ask: how did you acquire the rights to Stephen's material?

I would bet they didn't. Over the last 30 years King has granted special permission to many students and fans to make movies of his short stories under his dollar baby deal. Non-commercial use, no (or limited) online showings. They seem like little more than fanfilms in terms of what they can do for you; on the other hand, it was Darabont's dollar baby version of The Woman in the Room that landed Shawshank in his lap. So I guess ya never know...

Wow! I'm really excited about this. Congratulations.

Thanks, E:beer:
I'm flying out to AZ on Sunday...
Sounds interesting. I loved Callaghan's last scriptfest entry, so I'm curious to see what he does with the King's material.
haha "the King"
I am an uberfan (or a loyal subject) of his majesty, so hopefully I served him well.
I don't see Mick Garris' name in the credits list, so that bodes well so far.

I assume this is being done as a dollar baby... Will you ever be able to show it online?
Yes and no...
Yes, the director did land a dollar baby deal
-but-
We have a backend business plan in place (after the festival circuit)...

(put it this way...we are tracking Darabont's footsteps.)
Most impressive, Mr. Callaghan!
Most appreciated, Mr. Lasater:beer:
Alright!

J.P. Scott got a non-commercial deal from King's people...
But stay tuned...

Damn...
I jumped the gun:grin: (see Darabont reference above).
This is going to be a big production with big production value (not your father's dollar baby)

I've had the pleasure of reading Chad's script for Everything's Eventual. I won't go into the details that lead up to me being able to read it. Suffice to say I have fewer children now than I did this morning, and I'm in the market for a prosthetic limb. Still, it was worth it.

Anyone who has read King's short story will not be disappointed by Chad's adaptation. Anyone who hasn't read it will be treated to an exceptionally compelling film. I think the script stands on its own merits and is for King aficionados as well as people who have never read the modern master of horror.

I don't know the details of the Dollar Baby deal, but I hope that the film is available for all to see.

The deal with King allows the film to be show in film festivals. Hopefully we will have a film that is worthy of being accepted into many festivals around the country.

To answer some of the questions. Over the summer I contacted King's people and asked to do an adaptation. I picked EE (though I wanted to do Sister's of Eluria to no avail) with the idea that it would make a good short. I started looking for a writer and eventually found Chad through DVXuser. We worked on the story and outline together (through many, many very, very long phone calls). Then the project started to grow and grow. I'll probably share more details later but I never imagined that the project would turn into the fine production it has. Chad has been great to work with and this project has been a blast to produce.

Guys,
Most excellent news, its a true testiment to hard work and devotion to the craft (Chad), I wish you all the good production days and hard working skilled crew members that this project deserves. Make this a killer and show us long term slighty flagging filmdreamers that shooting for the stars is still a possability. I've got a great feeling about this. Get innnnnn!!

Good luck. But does the sale of the film depend on wether Mr King thinks he can sell the story to a studio or are you going to pay him the same amount they would?

Interesting strategy - if it pays off, it will probably pay off big!
"Let it ride"...

I'll carry your great feeling like a Talisman (get it? Talisman. Stephen Ki...oh forget it)

Assuming the final product is kick-ass, there is room for possible renegotiation with King. But per the upfront "dollar baby" deal, there can be no sale...only exhibition:thumbsup:
