HVX footage in Final Cut

A quick question about HVX footage in Final Cut:

My footage always has to render in the timeline before I can see it. Is this normal, or are my sequence settings incorrect?

That is normally a good indication that your sequence settings do not match whatever mode you shot on.

If you could be a little more specific I could give you more specific advice.

But hopefully that's enough to help.

In that case I'm afraid I still need help!

I shot on the HVX in 720 and 24p.

Sequence settings are:

Frame size: HD (960x720)
Pixel aspect ratio: HD (960x720)
Anamorhpic: Off
Field Dominance: Lower
Compressor: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC

Help?

FCP tells you to render whenever it can't handle the footage on its own. If you computer is too slow (and for HD footage, sometimes it doesn't take much) then you will be prompted to render just about everything.

If that is the case, I would suggest following Apple's insctructions for making an offline edit.

But more likely than not your sequence settings are off. In the browser, right click on one of your files and check the properties. Then check your sequence settings and make sure that every one of them match.

GO to the Easy Setups. Choose DVCPRO HD 720p24. Trash the EXISTING sequence. Create a new one. Start cutting in that new one.

Wrong settings. The "p" in 24p means Progressive, not Interlaced. Setting Field Dominance to "Lower" tells FCP to expect Interlaced footage. Set it to None. Compressor is also set wrong. HD is not NTSC-DV. NTSC-DV is SD, not HD.

Here's what you only need to change Filed Dominance to None, and Compressor to DVCPRO-HD 720P24, and make sure you time base is at 23.98. In fact, with the HD settings, when you change the Editing Timebast to 23.98, Field Dominance should automatically change to None and gray out.

And don't change the Sequence Settings while there's footage in the Sequence, it'll totally distroy that footage. You can only change Sequence settings properly with an empty Sequence.

What you should do is, start a new project (delete the existing Sequence), use the Easy Setup function to set the Project, then in the Browser hit the Command + N keyboard shortcut to create a new Sequence. It should be fine.

DVCPRO-HD runs on FCP fine off either an internal SATA Drive or external Firewire drive. I've never seen anyone really need to off-line DVCPRO-HD, it's handled by FCP very, very well. Even on older machines. But be sure you're running at least 5.1 with a faster than 1Ghz CPU, and a minimum of 2Gigs of RAM.
