Mac Users - Any Positive Feedback with CS4 Premiere

No matter what I try using a clean install of CS4.0.1 on a MacPro 2.66 GHz with fast SATA internals, I get hangs, freeze ups, and spinning beachballs with all HMC150 footage.

There are no specific exports from a timeline for the footage either.

Has anyone editing in RT on a similar set up without an incredibly buggy experience?

if you make a 720 sequence settings and put a 720 file, it works like a glove. same thing with 1080, otherwise it would not playback nicely and probably freeeeez after a few secs.

I have a mac pro 2.8 8 core, would Prem 4 run well on this system when editing AVCCAM footage without transcoding, is it comparable to FCS in terms of features?

Much appreciated.

Not sure if Premiere CS4 is different on a Mac than on a PC,
but on a PC, you can make a preset by going to:

Sequence preset, and highlighting 1080 with proper frame order, then moving to the general tab
and chosing Editing mode to be DESKTOP,
then change the setting to 1280x720 square pixels, and at the bottom, pick
SAVE PRESET.

That is how we do it on a PC.

i just tried out cs4 today with hmc footage on my macbook pro 2.16 core2 w/3gb ram. i was testing 1080 30p footage. did not play at all barely. i'm going to try out other sizes and framerates tomm morning.

greenhornet, i'll try out your methods for creating a new preset.

That's how I did it, but of course the real issue is the "desktop" setting.

I still get some funny business with 720/24p footage using it.

it would be nice to be able to use premiere pro for when i'm covering breaking news and don't have time to ingest/transcode. but i think it the long run i'd probably waste more time trying to edit in PP than in fcp.

sorry for changing the subject.
I'll be using a mac with cs4 to edit with hmc150. I understand I won't have to transcode. But does this mean when I fill up my 16gb card, the footage will only take up 16 gb on my computer?

Which Mac and with what frame rate and size?

Because Premiere requires some serious horsepower to edit natively and as of now anything 720 is not supported.
