New AVCHD Video on Panasonic Site

HI,

The HS300 is out of the consumer product line and frankly if you are tring to be in the business you should go for the HMC150. There are features on the 150 that you may not appreciate just yet but will wish you had in a year or so.

Best,

Jan

Absolutely no dispute at all about the HMC150 capabilities. It's a wonderful camera - and my attraction to it is why I got into this forum in the first place. But I'm trying to square financial considerations. Of course, if Panasonic had an educational discount ...

;-)

Seriously though, before deciding whether to go into hock, I'm basically looking for some expert advice on whether a non-HMC150 camera could adequately tide me over for about a year, and then serve as a good B-roll machine. I'm doing documentaries - sit-down public-affairs interview, poetic nature stories, punk bands kinds of things.

Folks in this community have recommended things like the HV30 for that purpose. The HS300 looks like it could be a good competitor to that, but I was unclear about the Mbps. That is, whether I should wait. Again, you may not be the right person to ask, but I appreciate your comment anyway.

17Mbps is roughly equivalent to HDV quality so should be fine for the HS300. Put it this way, I used both a HMC151E and an SD100 last weekend at the wedding, both in 17Mbps mode. The difference in image is very large even at the same bit rate. This is due to better lens, sensors etc. etc. in the HMC. If you can afford it, I say go for the HMC, if you can't then there's no choice to make.

Thanks for the video Jan! Personally, I just want you to know that this is the camera I want to get but since I edit on Final Cut, I'm holding off on it until FCP can support AVCCAM natively. ProRes is great and all but its tooo big.

That is true. My 16 gig card totalled out over a 100 gigs.. I will be eagerly hoping that native editing is on the horizon, but then I'll need an 8 core..

The HMC150 is tempting, but AVCCAM is still a prosumer format. I might hold out for a low-end pro AVC Intra camcorder. It's like HDV vs. XDCAM. Get to work, Jan!

The PH footage, especially at 50P/60P is simply amazing but totally unstable in Sony Vegas. The only way my quad core editing machines will edit the footage from any of our 150's is to shoot the whole day in 1080 50i PH or HA mode. The main advantage over our older JVC & Canon HDV cameras is tapeless acquisition, however, transcoding weekly wedding footage to other formats means more time & more hard disks which off-sets the perceived cost/time benefits.

Geez I wish Sony Creative Software would get it's act together with support for the high GOP PH modes, it's frustrating not being able to edit 50P footage at the moment, and my biggest fear is that by the time Vegas catches up I'll already be shooting with 2nd generation video DSLRs relegating my HMCs to out-of-sight lockdown duties.

No disrespect, but Vegas can't even edit it's OWN camera's native footage, so I'd rather see SCS handle that before worrying about supporting the modes of it's biggest competitors.

I hate that! You invest years of your professional life learning to master a platform only to get left in the cold.

Perrone, surely you're not saying that if I had gone down the EX1 route I would be having the same issues?

I am saying that you'd need to use Clipbrowser tool (free) to re-wrap the native .mp4 from the camera into an .mxf file to open in Vegas. As far as I know, no NLE supports the .mp4 natively out of the camera. Though I can play it with VLC, and convert it with ffmpeg.
