What the F... What's the catch with the Canon 5D?

Whats the recording time? Frame rate? Bit rate? There must be a catch!!! If not then this thing does what an EX1 does with a Letus adaptor!!! That would be insane.

There is a catch, several:

Lack of Full Manual Options
30P Only
Non-standard recording format

There's a lot it lacks. But in the end, if you're only doing stuff for yourself then there're ways around it.

30P? What the F... who came up with 30P? Can you imagine if this thing did 24P in a decent codec.... wow.... but it's still quite impressive.

It must be me

It must be me

Did anyone else watch that movie that he made? He has gotten all sorts of movie offers???? Really?
Technically, I SUPPOSE, it's well shot but... It has no soul. It is an empty shell. It's obviously shot by a stills guy. Those shots of the woman, BORING and all of it is stilted and pretentious. Rant over. Thank you for listening.

that is why he is a DP, he build beautiful images, that tell a story, using his set of skills and knoledge to pick the right equipment (glass, Camera and lights sources), utilize locations in the best way possible (available light), add some more and shoot. he is not a writer!

Your rant sounds like from another planet.

Sounds like a jealous junior film person that got passed up by a still right out of the gate! Happens more than you think.

Wrong guess about me but that's alright! I just think that the *craft* of making motion picture images to tell a story is more than pretty pictures.
But I do know that different shooters have different strengths, and sometimes a pretty picture maker is called for, I'm just a little surprised that there is so much "buzz" (is it real?) around this guy and this camera.

Man, you really are from K-pax or something...

The director of photography (DP, DOP) or cinematographer is in charge of the visuals.
Of course there is a LOT more to filmmaking than a pretty image, but the "pretty image" is the sole responsability of the DP.
Basically the Writer creates the story, the director invisions it and hire the best DP (in his eyes) to form a team in order to create the image. the sound is another team, cast is another one, make up, and so on.
His images are the most beautiful captured with the 5d yet (in my opinion) because of his cast, locations chosen, variety of angles and lenses, and ultimately his experience as a photographer, handling a still camera that shoots HD.
So there is no any buzz, the guy is good and got booked for severeal gigs, mainly people that saw his stuff and recognized the potential of creating a team with him to produce the visuals of their project.

Cheers

I heard it can only record up to 2 minutes at a time before the sensor starts to overheat. Thats a little too much like film for me, hehehe. It records in 8bit 4:2:0 and apparently has a issues with artifacts. But in the righ hands can make beautiful video. Takes exceptional low light video, some say better than film.

That is the D90 you are talking about. I used a 5dmII for a promo shooting, great image quality, easy to work with, and we shot continuously for like 5 hours, with 5 min breaks here and there to dump footage

Sorry guys .... The writing is on the wall....As magazines and such are going paperless and with the Green movement there are less still jobs out there. More and more still people are migrating to include Video into there services.
Still photographers tend to have better composition and lighting skills. The challenge will be the story telling abilities of a still photographer. For me.... As a primary still photographer, I find it easier to tell the story in video because of the many connected scenes you can do and the addition of acting/audio. In stills we have to tell the story in a single frame.

Still photographers tend to make better Commercials and Music Videos than feature films.

Just a warning guys.... A whole new crop of skilled competition like Mr. LaForet with a whole new crop of cameras in the future...... Better step up your game !!!!!

thanks for clearing that up. If they ever add xlr audio input and sdi output, I'm in, hehehe.

Somebody say something to discredit this camera. Come on people, we spent thousands of dollars on our equipement. We must have done something right. I don't want to be the only one left without a chair when the music stops.

D90 and 5D MKll are just a glimpse of whats in the future. It's just another tool. I'm very excited to see how the 5D mixes with EX footage.
