~ A Little Mouth to Feed ~ SLAMDANCE,TORONTO AFTER DARK, etc.

Hey all...

Got a text from Jack last night and he was almost giddy in type if that is possible. I am waiting for full reports which I am sure he will post here too. He was doing interviews, and taking meetings and getting all social with other film people....

I am dying to see what he posts next but figured I would at least mention he checked in!!

Woo hoo Jack..you go!

Michele

Looking forward to hearing the news.

Er ... don't know about giddy. I was actually very tired when I texted and coming down of the adrenaline of it all.

After our last screening yesterday I felt a release of not having to worry about pimping our film / keeping our poster from getting covered up by other films etc. But also a downward energy swing compounded by lack of sleep/fighting off a cold/Dayquil.

So going back a few days. Received an email from a boutique production and distribution company based in NY that they wanted to meet with me to discuss bundling my short films for overseas sale and my plans for a feature. I've been asked not to disclose the name of the company at this point. They're a start up, MBAs form NYU waiting to expand the 80 shorts in their stable to 150 before they go totally public. But no one, myself included, should get to excited about this. We've seen on this website a few times where someone supposedly has money or a deal for someone only to see that person disappointed. There are folks out there that may not even know they are doing it, but who get a thrill from the attention they get from an eager filmmaker in need of a deal. Having said that though, I do get a good vibe off these guys and the rep I met with in Park City wants me to meet again with him and his partner in NYC before I move back to Austin.

So that was Tuesday.

Wed. began with a 7:45 AM interview on Park City TV. Not a huge deal, but even the big Sundance films do this interview. It was a live morning show format. It's supposed to be online at the Park City TV website eventually and / or the Park City TV Channel on Youtube, but I can't find it yet. If any of you find it let me know please.

Wed afternoon @ 1 I was double booked to be at our second screening/talkback and do the Panasonic Fireside Chat at Slamdance with Barry and Jan. So I did the screening / talkback and then walked down the hall to do the Panny chat.

After that I hung out with the I Sell the Dead guys (the feature we screened before). They were great and so was their film. The director Glenn McQuaid was super cool and mentioned how great he thought our short was before the screening of his film both at the premiere and at the second screening as well. When I Sell the Dead comes around in whatever form it gets distribution you should definately check it out. There are some undead sequences that rival or even, in a few instances, exceed early Sam Ramie camera choreography and staging in their efficacy and inventiveness.

It was great to hang out with Glenn and discuss his journey as a first time feature filmmaker. I was also excited to get to discuss horror films with Larry Fesseneden, a personal indie filmmaking hero of mine and critically acclaimed horror iconoclast. HE was one of the producers of this film and also did a stellar job playing the grave robber that's not Dominic Monaghan. Check his films out if you don't know his work. His biggest release was probably Wendigo. His films challenge himself and his audience and are about something - in other words they're smart films that explore a rich thematic tapestry. Larry and I discussed M. Night Shamalamadingdong, The Sixth Sense, Psycho, Halloween, The Shining, his work , and more. It was pretty grand.

So the cast and crew of I Sell the Dead and I put away some Jameson's and wine during the afternoon and evening.

Thursday. I Slept late, took in a few films and the music video block at Slamdance and then hooked up with an old friend from undergrad who was acting in a feature at Slamndance and some of his friends for drinks and dinner.

Today, I'm heading out in a few minutes to try to see a feature film at Sundance Grace a film about a baby with an insatiable thirst for blood. Sound familiar? Anyway, we are trying to develop the short into a feature, so I need to see if the existence of this film has any impact on those plans or not. What I know about Grace is that it's about a woman who is 8 months pregnant when she has an accident which kills the baby she's carrying. Against personal and medical advice she carries the baby to term and delivers it. But synopses say that it "doesn't stay dead for long" and that she soon learns she'll have to make all sorts of extreme sacrifices in order to provide for her child.

Grace is sold out so I need to go two hours early and get a number then check back about a 1/2 hour before the screening.

After that, the final night reception/party for Slamdance.
*EDIT: Too foggy / potentially icey to make the trek to park city & back. Had burger king in my hotel instead of going to the final Slamdance party

Saturday - on a plane back to Brooklyn to rest briefly, then start packing for the move to Austin.

you're a classy lady and a true actress, Michele. I'd enjoy casting you in any of my movies.

keep up the good work.

where is jds, dammit? how long does it take to move across the country, anyway?
Hey guys.

We just got our internet turned on yesterday.
Got informally married today - you get a certificate and get spousal insurance (the reason we did the whole thing), but you have to get divorced if things go sour.
Also, bought our first car today.

Re LMTF / SLAMDANCE Lots to catch up on.
Have one small video post to make (30 seconds or so) featuring the newest of the new directors at Slamdance (12 years old, completed a her first feature, in post for her 2nd at 16yrs old) and a more established indie director Larry Fessenden and me saving his life - sort of. I do keep his sled from going off the edge of a cliff.

After that I have a half dozen or so ideas / tips I picked up that i can pass along about schmoozing / networking at these fests which will be my 4th / and probably final official post re LMTF at Slamdance. Actually I may combine those in one post since the video is low on hard content. I have to follow up with a bunch of people I met at the fest though, haven't even done that yet.

As an UPDATE, here's some concrete developments as a result of the festival:
  • Got a Sales Agent.
  • Got invited to another fest.
  • Sales Agents also produce features and have asked to see some of my feature scripts.

Thoughts:

1) Congrats on getting hitched

2) Larry owes you a life debt. Do not forget this. :)

3) Congrats on the sales agent and new contacts

Note to self: Get into a major film festival stat...

Jack

Woo Hoo on getting married!

Looking forward to seeing your footage from the Slamdance Sled off too! And hearing the rest of the story. I am trying to get one more hard copy of the Star News so I can send it with the other hard copies to you.

Also made a little something for ya that I will send along too!

Michele

Wedding Bells, Slamdance & Agents, oh my!

Wedding Bells, Slamdance & Agents, oh my!

Congrats on getting married Jack!

Hey, last we spoke, I think it was around your birthday- never did get a chance to tell you how much I enjoyed "A Little Mouth to Feed" which totally ROCKED, BTW.

I especially enjoyed the way you pulled back for the reveal shot at the end - also, if memory serves, the way you guys gaffed & back-lit the forest/night scene was tight. Nice acting, great script. But I would expect no less, of course.

Couldn't get this shout ou to ya in the fall, cause I was directing/co-producing a TV pilot among other things... but damn, it's great to see your short doing well at SlamDance. Congrats on the agent, too!

If ya feel like spending your honeymoon at Disneyrama in O-Town (orlando) and teaming up on some filming insanity at my studio- lemme know. Or if you're ever doin any second unit stuff down this way, drop me a line... I'll roll out the red carpet!

Thanks all.

The Sales Agent I met through LMTF is primarily focusing on Cold Calls due to it's PG programmability, that's the one we have a written contract for and supposedly something is happing with that for HDTV.

While those guys are alluding to doing stuff with LMTF and Unawakening, we haven't gotten in to those details yet.

In the meantime I was just approaced by a Canadian distributor with papers for LMTF. So checking with my sales agents etc.

Not sure what the difference is between a Sales Agent and a Distributor , but hopefully will figure that out soon.

Anyway ...

In Philly this weekend for Phiadelphia Cinefest with A Little Mouth to Feed.

Which means new posters and such :)

Oh. Congrats on getting married!!! Missed that one.

And great to hear its all going well. Keep getting awards for LMTF and your going to run out of space on the poster. :p

Well we are Officially Unofficially Married. :)

We went to the clerk and got the paperwork for "Unofficial Marriage", which means I can be carried on my GF's insurance and that we have to get a divorce if we break up. Or maybe it's something like we have to get a divorce if one person or the other contests the breakup within 100 days or something like that. I forget. Anyway, we're basically married but didn't have a ceremony or anything.

Got back from Philly last Monday. Fest was fun. Saw some good shorts and Michael Keaton's directorial debut "Merry Gentlemen" which was quite good.

Rest of this post is a double post (here in and in Cold Calls thread) as the video below has to do with both "Cold Calls" and "A Little Mouth to Feed". It was taken at Philly Cinefest officially for LMTF.
