The Rode NTG-3... the poor man's 416?

What is the point of your A question? I have used the 416 as stick mic, of course. Are you trying to probe that I don't know what I'm talking about, just because I disagree with you? Anybody with some experience have been in a situation when needs to use the 416 as a stick mic, I've done it and I don't like it.

I re-read my own post and I don't see how it's confrontational? I have no interest in probing you.

I'm making efforts to educate through examples, and backing up what I say by taking the time to SHOW what I'm saying. So when I say "hey this works in some situations... like THIS for example"... and I show you... I think some people may find that helpful... knowing that in the situation I'm showing, if they do what I do, they will get the same result I just showed through example.

I wasn't trying to provoke you... I was implying that if you tried a 416 handheld that you may be surprised at how well it works. Since you just said that you HAVE tried it... I guess you and I had different results?

I posted a little clip of myself standing DIRECTLY in front of 55mph traffic... we're talking a REALLY loud environment that would usually render location sound unusable... and you can hear me clear as a bell... so I have a hard time understanding how that is not a good result... but if you think that sounds like crap then you are free to have that opinion and I can agree to disagree.

I'm sorry if my post came across as confrontational... I was seriously asking the "A" question.

If they were the same price and the 416 appeared new I'd probably lean that way just for the resale value (just in case I ever wanted to sell it)... but I think the NTG-3 has the better polar pattern of the two.

It's going to be hard for any long-time audio guy to let go of sentimental feelings towards the 416... including even for me... but I think the NTG-3 is a more functional mic.

No... unfortunately my local dude flaked out...

I'll have some various comparisons up as I can do them... more to come, that's for sure.

Great review man... I've been eyeing the NTG3 since I saw the review on b&h and heard the tyford audio clip. I'm glad that you are another advocate for it. By the way how much did you pay for yours, and where? I was thinking b&h but if there's elsewhere I'll go with that too.

I got my NTG-3 from Guy at DVeStore.com They're one of the DVXuser sponsors... and he gave me a good deal on one.

If you PM him, I'm sure he'll hook you up :)

I think DVXuser members are going to be glad to know that place... there's some good stuff brewing...

I'll second Matt's recommendation to contact Guy at DVStore. That's where I got my NTG-3 too. Guy was terrific to do business with and gave me a great price as well.

I don't want to sound like advertisement but, Guy really deserve it.
Also got an NTG-3 from him (along with many other stuff), and I don't think I could find a better deal or service anywhere else.

If you think about getting one of these, you should really give him a call.
And hey, I'm even in Costa Rica!
Great mic by the way

B&H just raised the price of their Rode NTG-3 Basic Kit by almost $300. I e-mailed them and asked what the reason was, and they simply said "The price of many products has recently gone up".

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=workaround.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=573977&is=REG

'Tis a shame, since I was just about to buy that kit. I even already had it in my shopping cart. When I checked it the next day, the price had skyrocketed up 35%. Now I have to wait and hope the price comes back down. That's quite a huge difference.

Heck for the price of a 416 you could have the NTG-3 with a nice pole and RODE blimp. That's just super awesome.

DVeStore just put together a location sound package for less than B&H's above.

Also, here is a limited time offer just for dvxusers getting an NTG-3 - mention in the comments field during check out that you're from dvxuser and we'll kick in a free K-TEK KE79CC boom pole - yes the bad ass little "Traveler" - collapses down to 1'8" - nice incentive - won't last long - only 20 of these. Pick your color.

Awesome! Order placed.

I'd rather buy locally anyway.

We should call Guy... "the go-to Guy"...

1) DVestore is sponsoring the site...
2) Donates prizes to the fests...
3) Maintains presence on the boards (showing that he cares about, and has interest in, the community)...
4) He's spanking B&H on a great location sound kit!

The B&H location kit has the KE89cc pole... which is way less then the KE79cc pole that Guy is including (the KE89 is a 4 section pole, while the KE79 is a 6 section pole, and the KE89 only reaches about 6" longer, while the KE79 can be collapsed almost 9" shorter... in another words, the KE79 costs more because it has more collars, more sections, can go "almost" as long... but gets short enough to EASILY toss in a bag!)

So break it down like this... simply put, Guy is effectively making a fantastic complete kit... NTG-3, K-TEK (best brand pole, IMO)... and a REAL BLIMP SYSTEM, complete with furry... all under $1K!

If you look at the B&H kits... they don't include a blimp until you're in the $1800 range! (Yes at that point the included pole costs more as well... but $800 MORE then the other included pole? It's obvious that Guy's deal is crushing any of the B&H kits.)

Hi Matt:

Thanks for your review, it was very informative. I was writing an article about shooting in the jungle and I have heard that the NTG-3 is now considered a weapon of choice for super hot humid conditions. Have you had chance to test that yet? Probably not in Winter in STL, huh?

Let me know if you have tried it out in or know of anyone who has tried it in humid conditions.

Thanks,

Dan

On several occasions I've heard the 416 and the NTG-3, and I can easily say there is no audible difference between the two microphones -- I consider the 416 kind of obsolete at this point, given that it costs more. The 89CC is better because it gets up to 7.2 feet.

The 79cc is $30 more because it collapses shorter... requiring 2 more collars/sections.

I think they're both two short to be your only pole, but I'd rather have the portability of the 79cc... and then get something else that's at least 9' long or longer for the main pole.

I'm going to post a clip of the NTG-3 and 416, as I have both of them now. Coming soon.
