is D90 for FilmMaking and MusicVideos

I just bought a D90.
And i will try my best to PROVE those guys wrong who says D90 suck at Video. I am inspired by the Videos that i see daily flying everywhere shot by D90. Not every Videos are great. But some are awsome.
Keep on waiting.
I think DSLR movie modes are gonna be revolution in filmmaking.

Mr. Horton I am so glad you like them! Thats why I know how crappy this D90 is! The first one is with the HV30. Another crappy camera. And BTW my feet are squarely on the floor dude, I have no doubt about it!

These ones are good too. All D90 early testing. Glad to be one of the pioneers.:

The rest is not D90. Just some stuff for the kids websites. But you can watch it too. Its making us some extra cash.

Thank you for the plug. Publicity is always good. Please everybody interested visit so I can have a few thousand more hits!

The Shadow Killer: It is good that you have the camera. It is just the beggining. It is important to get your feet wet and prepare for the future. I love the idea of being able to shoot some pics one mintute and video the next holding the same camera. The most important rule with it is that you have to steady it completely. One of my gripes with it is that you might have a great take going and all of a sudden it wobbles momentarily and there goes the shot. Good luck with your work.

BTW: Mr. Horton, is this master piece yours? Oscar nominees will be announced tomorrow I believe. LOL.

You obviously aren't an expert. Thats my point. The tests you did aren't very good, but it had nothing to do with using the D90. You can check out my work if you want....

I never said I was an expert dude. If you are one then good for you. What I know is that the D90 does not cut it my friend, (and I own one and use it everyday for my photography work). And that is a fact. Ask the "experts" and they will tell you the exact same thing. You can shoot all you want with it but the camera is a first generation new technology that is not there yet. If you one to do pro quality work you will at least need an HVX200, HPX 170, EX 1 or something similar. Anything else is just practice. Maybe the D400 will be it, maybe not. Maybe the Scarlet will someday materialize and be it, maybe not. At the moment the best quality in DSLRs shooting video is the 5D, (and again for the record I don't plan to get one), just go back to Vimeo and check it out. If you want to invest your time shooting video with the D90 good for you too.

Excellent work. Sharp, steady image, vibrant colors, excellent focusing. Expert material no doubt. Congrats.

I could have sworn that John said he was an expert. Its like some posts are disappearing..
Sorry. It wont happen again, but very strange indeed Mr. Cabellaro.

Sorry Jason, it stops here. An for the record I am not an expert. For me expert number one here is Mr. Barry Green! He really knows his stuff.

Honestly, the personal stuff is a bit distracting.
But once again, I really feel that it will, and always does come down to one's ingenuity and drive.
The HV30 is not a crappy camera.

Everyone having their opinion is fine. But realize that some have actually harnessed cheaper means.

Personally, I find John less offensive than some on this board. But, I cannot ever agree with him on his dismissal of the HV30 or for that matter the D90. Someone will and always does find a way.

Sorry for the HV30 remark, to tell you the truth I was a bit upset when I wrote that. The HV30 is a pretty good camera for the price. A friend of mine has it and I borrow it sometimes. What I don't like anymore is transfering the tape to the computer. It takes so long. As for the D90 I have an opinion from my own experience. From the days of the rumors that it was coming out I was all for it. I went out and bought it the first week it came out but at the end I wasn't satisfied with its output. That is my experience with it. On the other hand, by example, based on my experience with the HVX 200 I can say it is a wonderful camera for its price and I would recomend it to anybody that asked.
Now Canon, Panasonic and others are coming out with great new small cameras that at least on paper sound very promising. All AVCHD and tapeless. Also if the D400 rumors prove right lets hope it brings an improvement on the video quality. I am 100% for the future of the medium and its affordability, be it regular video cameras or video DSLRs.

BTW: I dislike personal attacks and don't like to be attacked as I just experienced here. My opinions are for the equipment's pros and cons based on personal experience, research, etc. If I feel posiitive or negative about it I will not hesitate to state my opinion.

I have to say I agree with everybody considering everyone has their personal tastes and different uses for the D90. Sure if you're after a clean, crisp, sharp, digital video look then the D90 might not be for you when you can get a hmc150 or even a HV30 or it's newer equivalent. If you want a gritty, retro, super8/16mm look then the D90 has no equal. Here's hoping the D??? offers the best of both worlds then everybody can stop their bitchin.

I think john said he was a pro not an expert.

When I first got my D90 I jumped in and started shooting with a "video head" or video habits. No power zoom, autofocus etc... It hit me that even though the D90 is digital, it's not a video camera. So I've been looking at my D90 as a "digital film" camera.

I also like the softer, gritty look. If I want something sharper I use my HV20.

Oh, by the way, did I mention that I'm a poor man. So I have never used a "Pro" video cam. My goal is to make the best "art" I can with the tools I have.

I don't see how the D90 is grittier than the HV20. Its picture is actually better.
It's definitely grittier, grainier, not as clear as the HV20. Definitely not as sharp as he pointed out.

Especially in low-light. It's the DOF that everyone really loves about it. Helps eliminate the need for adapters.

That isn't my experience with it. It seems just as sharp, and the low light is much better, less grainy. I have the HV20 and D90 and I've used both pretty extensively.

Well, the footage from the HV20 in capable hands speaks quite differently than your claims.
Besides, 1080i will always look sharper than 720P.

I'm not saying the D90 isn't as good as the HV20. It just doesn't best it in the areas that you claim it does.

My hands are capable. Your assessment is wrong.
Rick, the FOOTAGE speaks for itself. And going around telling people in this forum that they are wrong will not get you far. Especially when you can't back it up. Are you saying that 720p looks sharper than 1080i? It's great for movement but it's not as sharp looking. That's actually a good thing for the D90. It will look less like video.

Now is this where you go make fake accounts to attack me personally like you did on the HV20 forum? :)

With regard to softness the D90 reminds me of my HV20 with the Letus Mini installed. Which I like. I'm still learning how to use the D90 and hope my skills will improve. Yes, the D90 is much better in low light than the HV20 but I find it hard to focus (my eyes) in low light and forget about doing a tracking shot in low light with a 50mm 1.4 nikon set at 1.4. This past weekend I was asked to shoot someone walking down a side walk at night with street lights only. My DOF was about 6 inches and just could not stay in focus. It may be time to get a follow focus, but I will need a deeper DOF for a shot like that.

in my experience, my HV20s are noisier in low-light than the D90, but sharper. both skew on horizontal pans.

the answer to this thread's question is: "Yes! But are YOU ready?" ;)

Agreed, definitely sharper. I think my low-light footage will attest to that. Locking the gain does wonders for noise on the HV series as well.

As for the threads original question.... you could shoot a movie on a cell phone! Some have.

Content is king.
