p2 and live events filming

Hi,

I work for a live events production company, we work for conference clients and produce awards shows for them as well as film AGM etc.

We have just moved in the market of offering them an ability to edit down their shows in to a montage or to provide them with their entire show on DVD.

We're running FCP and using Panasonic P2 cameras for filming. I've come in to problem that with our company there is need for a quick change around and cleaning of cameras as we only have 2 and they are in constant use. I can't seem to find a quick way to back up these files safely and quickly, and with information that i can refer back to in the edit at a later date. At the moment when a camera comes back from a show, we connect it up through firewire, open up FCP and use the log and transfer system this provides us with sometimes hundreds of clips of the show or the filming of cutaways for the edit. We're struggling to find a good solution to 1. Back up the media and keep it for reference or use at a later date, and 2. a quick and informative way of ingesting this media into FCP. I've read a few different workflows for working with P2 media and just cant seem to make any relate to our needs. Is there any information you guys could offer that may help? I've looked into buying a firewire hard drive to record onto, but not sure that this would give us what we need as sometimes we can be recording up to 5 hours of show. Our cameras have 4 SD 16gb cards each. So we're finding that we're using alot of space on our back just as back up and storage.

Any information on this would be really great as we're struggling to keep up!

Well, you're creating a lot of data, so naturally, you're going to need a lot of storage. My personal preference is to keep the raw P2 MXf files of each client archived, in case I ever need to get back to it for whatever reason, usually up to five years after the shoot.

So, what I would do is get some big external HDDs, and either with Duel Adaptor or PCMCIA slots, dump the P2 cards intact without using the camera. Then your camera is freed up for work, and once the dump has been verified, you can erase the card. Then then the data is available for any editing app you want. So, your 5 hours of shoot at 720p/24pn would need about 120Gb of storage. I would charge the client for the HDD and keep his stuff on it.

By using FCP L&T, you are sacrifing the original metadata and structure of the raw P2 footage.

Use the metadata features of the camera to help pre-sort your projects. You can sort the footage based on what camera it came from, what project it was shooting for, etc. Raylight can help you instantly ingest the footage into FCP by metadata, with no time spent on log & transfer. You will still need to copy the footage off your cards somehow; if quick turnaround is important to you then I recommend getting a PCD35 card reader. I've seen a 64GB P2 card transferred to a Mac tower in ten minutes flat. If you used that and Raylight (or Calibrated's MXF importer, or MXF4Mac, or P2 Log Pro or HD Log or any of the other alternatives to Log & Transfer) you'd have a nearly instantaneous edit station.

I use the PCD20 and it's pretty cool via FW800. I've got 5 cards for total of 160 GB. On all day/multi-day shoots I can just plug them in and do mass ingest real fast. Or immediately after an in-house shoot it will want to be viewed. I can pull the card and play it right off the card up on the big LCD.

I know this is a very old post, but I had a couple of questions. This is the only post I could find that listed the various alternatives for MXF transfer to FCP. First question: using these products, the original MXF file can be edited inside of FCP - i.e. no compression or changes to the MXF file? Second question: of these products, which would you recommend, or which do you use? Thanks!

Yes, using those products you would be using the original, unmodified MXF data, with no recompression or changes.

As to which I use, I use the Windows platform, so the answer is none of the above.
