New AVCHD Video on Panasonic Site

Thanks Jan,

However the last downloadble still of the "night club" scene seems simulated, I paused the video a couple of times to compare and I didn't see the crazy macroblocking like the one on the TIFF file?

I think if you were able to go frame by frame you would find what we found. I think the compressed file basically goes from I frmae to I frame. I can assure you that we did not make this up.

Best,

Jan

I think I am beginning to understand how these are done.

So you have a D5 Master, you render versions of the file into the varying codecs and produce the spots we see here. That's cool, but you guys should really say that's what's happening and that these shots didn't come from downloading the footage straight from the cams.

i love the h.264 codec, before with me mini dv cam i would always compress to h.264 because it was always the smallest file, but also the best looking. i cant wait to get my hmc.

I don't know if that's what they did or not. I know that's how I'd do it.

Also, I don't know that those shots came from the D5 master, or if they recorded directly to the codecs and then mastered the video we saw from D5. Again, I don't know. But if I was doing it, I'd remove as many variables as possible all the way through. I'd record straight from the head to a deck, or I'd take an uncompressed master recorded straight to hard disk and then render it out using each codec, then re-import that and show what the differences are.

They're not comparing cameras here, they're comparing formats. So yes, more details would be nice to know, but I would be very surprised if they just stuck a 1/2" XDCAM next to a 2/3" AVC-Intra camera (or an HMC150 against a Z7U or whatever) and pressed the "record" button. In my opinion that would be an infinitely less useful comparison. Nigh unto pointless, really, if the point was to compare how one codec performs against another.

The ideal, to compare one codec against another, would be to get raw uncompressed 10-bit full-raster images, and then process them through the respective codecs. Either by recording it directly into a deck that uses that codec, or by rendering it out of a timeline into that codec. At least, that's the way I'd do it.

Right. The problem of course by doing it in post (not saying they did or not) is that what's happening in camera isn't exactly replicated by software in post. You're idea of taking SDI straight into a deck is a good one, but I don't know any HDV decks that support SDI in. Component maybe. I guess you could convert it, but that opens another can of worms.

Ok I do understand how its codec vs codec...

I just wish camera companies will compare footage of their cameras with other cameras of their competition. In the eyes of the buyer, it will make more sense.

Nice marketing.

But all due respect to Panasonic and Jan, and the fact that we own a HMC150, I'll just don't understand how the company can support Windows only for the AVCHD to p2 and AVCHD viewer.

Macs should have parity; they have a significant part of the market.

Does anyone know if the avchd viewer software will dispay time code? I have a slow laptop that will only playback at 15 fps and don't see timecode.

there is nothing left to be said

I saw this demo of AVCHD vs. HDV at DV Expo in LA, and it was one of the reasons I got the HMC150 as opposed to one of the new Sony HDV cams. Thanks for posting this, it's very interesting to see!

Hi Guys and Gals,

We just posted a video on our website talking about the AVCHD codec and a bit about how it works and compares to other long GOP codecs.

http://www.panasonic.com/business/provideo/avccam-features.asp

Hope you find it interesting and useful.

Best,

Jan

Interesting and useful indeed - thank you for the demo. Not sure if you are the right Panasonic person to ask but there have been some conflicting reports about the upcoming HDC-HS300 - whether it's a max 24Mbps or 17Mbps. I'm a student and weighing that against the HMC150 for affordability reasons.
