I wish to transfer files from the P2 card to a FireStore100.
(I have seen it work once so I know it is possible.)
Page 84 of the HVX202 manual has been followed.
Barry Green's book on page 94 gives a variant. This too has been followed.
Neither work for me.
When the menu appears (after going via "1394 HOST" then to PC/DUB), all menu items above the item "SETUP" are not available. Hence the transfer is not possible.
Many attempts have been made using variations to no avail.
Where am I going wrong?

I don't know of anyone that has used a FS to accomplish this.

The FS isn't a simple external powered firewire device; hence your issues
 
When travelling "light" a P2 card for shooting through the day with download to FS100 when back at base is a good reason.
Shooting SD on 16GB card gives >1hr. FS100(160GB) will store up to 10 X 16GB.
Lugging a laptop about in a backpack with all the other necessary day to day clobber does not compare with carrying a FS100.

Hmm. The firestore might work for this purpose if you connected using the computer I/O port instead of the DV I/O firewire port. But I don't know if you could just reformat afterwards and still use it as a FireStore... ?
 
I have used the Computer I/O port and still no joy.
I have seen seen the FS100 sucessfully reformatted by the HVX and the sucessful transfer of files to the FS from P2 card. The files were subsequently transferred to a computer. The FS "FORMAT" was sucessful and the FS worked as normal. Now unable to replicate P2 to FS file transfer.
Is there a facility to format the FS to HVX specs from a www download programme?

Has anyone actually done what I am trying to do? If so can it still be done?

It is my understanding that the camera has to format the external.

But how do you reformat or initialize the FS after that?
 
Page 84 item 5 of the HVX handbook guides through Formatting of the external HDD.
Page 74 of the FS100 handbook describes how to format (reformat) the HDD.
Everything to achieve what I need is available in both the HVX and FS. This feature is meant to be available.
I have seen the setup actually work, so it can be done. But something is stopping the "FORMAT HDD" menu item, among others, from being available in the HVX.
Maybe a Panasonic Guru can help solve the matter of these unavailable menu items in the HVX?

The firestore isn't a bare external firewire drive.

It has firmware, a unix operating system, among other things.

I'm not arguing with you but just pointing out the obvious difference.
 
You're right, there is no argument.
However one might expect to be able to use the facilities as described in the associated handbooks.
