The Best High-Budget NLE System!!

I am confiused
I looked into the details of the DS system, and there are no details about how many streams of HD and SD playback, and how many lyers of 2D, 3D graphics can be play-back in real time!!

For example: VelocityHD indicates the folowing RT performance in thier websit:

- Full-quality, HD playback of two video streams (compressed and uncompressed), two dynamic graphics streams, real-time 3D DVE, and true, dual-stream, real-time, HD transitions and effects.

- Real-Time HD/SD Color Correction

- Full quality, real-time playback of eight SD video (compressed and uncompressed) streams, and eight graphics streams. Ten of these video and graphics streams can be layered and mixed in any combination, can be transitioned, layered and composited in real time, with remaining graphics streams available as wipe borders and DVE masks.

- Full-quality interactive feedback on the HD monitor while setting up transitions and effects — letting you see the results instantly in full quality for unparalleled precision and freedom to experiment.

- The optional A3DX™ 3D DVE daughtercard adds one channel of real-time, high-definition 3D DVE and four channels of real-time, standard-definition 3D effects — including perspectives, warps and rotation — plus real-time masks, secondary color correction, chroma/luma keying, blurs and more. This effects processing happens right on the Altitude™ hardware and is not limited by the host system’s CPU or graphics card performance.

- 3D effects such as rotation, perspective and warp can be applied to graphics as well as video. All of these effects, plus variable speed changes, reverse, color correction, pixel effects, transparency and more can be combined simultaneously in true real time with transitions and rolling and crawling titles, providing maximum creative flexibility.

- All real-time effects processing happens right on the Altitude™ hardware, providing guaranteed performance regardless of effects combinations.

- Real Time HD/SD Title rolls and crawls.

Now, where can I find such information abut Avid's Media Composer Nitris DX , Symphony Nitris DX , and DS?

Thanks everyone for your help ....

Kind regads

In my opinion the GUI Of Premiere Pro is second to none and the realtime previews look great on an NTSC monitor. I admit your needs will be different than mine. Premeire Pro, FCP, Edius and Avid all do about the same thing but in the end one will have a much better work flow to fit your needs. More realtime effects does not always make for a better editing system. The GUI and integration is what should matter most. I see the Velocity HD system has DFX for highend compositing. Does it integrate as well as Premiere and AE? How is the the GUI? I used to use Edius because they bragged about the realtime performance. It does have much more RT than Premiere Pro but when all is said and done I can work much faster with Premiere Pro (great GUI).

Your best bet is to test drive several systems. If the GUI is not well liad out then the realtime benefits might make it obsolete.

Thanks guys for the feedback ...

medeamajic, and milksac ... one of the biggest advantages of Velocity system is the great GUI, it is very logical, very easy to learn for new users .. in fact, it is s easy as Vegas, and Premiere.

I do not need to test out VelocityHD becouse the interface is about te same for the last 10 years or so. However, testing out Avid DS and Autodesk Smoke would be very nice, but how??! Sony agent in Yemen is the only authorised resller of Avid products in Yemen, but they do not offer a demo for Avid systems.

By the way, I never needed any support for any Velocity systems in the last 10 years!! Velocity is very stable system, and that is why I like it, and can depend on it. I hope Avid's systems are that stable as well.

I've been cutting on Avid Xpress Pro for last couple years its what I learned on but if I were you I would get FCP for sure no doubt in my mind. I find myself using Premier Pro more than Avid now days and if I had a Mac I would certainly have FCP and be doing all my editing on that.

Premier is nice but but you wouldn't attract clients with it like you would FCP. In fact you would lose clients with Premier, sadly.

Again, the original poster is wanting a high end system with hardware assisted realtime. THIS IS NOT FCP. It's not even Media Composer. He needs a VelocityHD, Avid DS, or Smoke. FCP simply cannot match the realtime of these machines, and the fact that you have to go to multiple applications for color grading, FX work, etc...removes it even farther from a viable solution. Symphony with Nitris DX is about as low as I'd suggest the OP go, but even then they're probably need things offered in the DS.

Premiere, FCP, and Media Composer--while great editors--are not high end.

Well, thanks for your advice, but I am a WIndows man, and I feel very comfortable with WIndows, unlike Mac.

Why you are using Premire more than Xpress?!!

It is very strange!! why would the clints care about your NLE?!! I think calints should care only about the quality of the work, not what system was used to creat it, right?!

Thanks ... that is exactly 100% what I mean .. high-end system :)

The question now is which system should I go with, VelocityHD, Avid Media Composer Nitris DX, Avid Symphony Nitris DX, Avid DS, or Smoke?

My comment regarding support wasn't specifically targeted at Avid and wasn't a commentary on the stability of Avid's products. I would have a support contract for any high end system, be it from Autodesk, Avid or Harris. It's a good insurance policy. If your edit suite goes down and you don't have a support contract then you can tinker around with it yourself for a day and hopefully fix the problem. All the while losing $350/hr (billable time) during the tinkering. If you're down for a few days (ex: a video board fails) the lost income will sky rocket. Worse yet, if you miss a clients deadline because the suite was down then you will likely burn your client relationship. The cost of losing a client relationship at this level will make the losses from a few days downtime seem like peanuts. On the lower end of the scale (MC & FCP) the losses from being down are not as significant because the rates for the room are less so the downtime isn't as expensive. If you're down for a day you might lose a bit of income but you can recover.

Whether or not you find value in a support contract depends on many factors: the volume of work, type of work, room rate, complexity of the finishing system, client base, etc.

nle's the realtime concept

nle's the realtime concept

hey man i read your posting for nle with kick ass options
ok you know you can preiveiw inrealtime on most availble systems , i use an rtx 2
for budget work and quik vids no render up to a few layers here and there
but if you apply special effects to your work the best special effects will have to be renderd no matter what untill you finalize .
avids realtime and most realtime preiveiws are compressed veiws untill you finalize?

so you can get uncompressed realtme for adobe premire high end is axio?
all realtime all the time adobe style, but higher end nle will give you compressed realtime veiws then you finalize for that ultra smooth finish?

if you shoot "off the truck images"no color corection or effects you can work in realtime in almost any outfit now with out add on cards just use raid.
70k you hire me and we make kick ass jack ass movies that garauntee return cost! yeah rite!! i wish but hey man i (mike d) wants toknow your decision!!!

Sorry I don't have much high end "hardware" experience but sounds like Butcher knows what he is talking about :)

I'm a windows person too but my next computer will be some type of mac just so I can edit with FCP.

I really like Premiere UI and ease of use. Not to mention I love the Dynamic Link between adobe products. I use after effects etc.. a lot.

I'm sure many more will tell you a lot of clients do care about your NLE. I think they should only care about the final output as well but that isn't always the case.

Mike D, and triplej96 ... thanks for your feedback.

Now, we have only one NLE system, VelocityQ 3D Delux Turn-key System. It is an amaizing SD NLE, and we are very happy with it. But, we need an HD NLE system now.

I will post my selection here, after I decide ... :)

Avid Symphony Nitris DX is incredibly affordable now (about $23,000) and is rock solid in its real time HD capabilities with built in HD down and cross conversion 9also real time). Dual HD-SDI I/O...secondary, key-framable color correction bundled with Avid FX and Avid DVD.

what it be geee? nle foe-shizzle!!!

what it be geee? nle foe-shizzle!!!

yeah man see what you get ,theres so much technologie now!!!!!!

aboammar:

Based on your input, I would say stay with Velocity HD. It sounds like your previous system has done well for you, and besides, they all do the same thing anyway, so go with what works best for you.

I have done alot of crazy things with my Avid system. Right now its running flawlessly. But I can say this, alot of what I do is "possible" according to Avid, unfortunately it is just not "probable" that it will work as they say. Its up to you to bridge the gap, (often why people purchase tech support).

Hi everyone .. :)

Eric, I would love to stay with Velocity systems, and upgrade to VelocityHD because it is a very fast, solid RT NLE system, however, I am little worried that Harris will stop supporting it in the near future!! I have heard from others that it is very possible that Harris might pull the plug on it!! I feel this is true after I found out last night that the price of full VelocityHD with all option has droped to less than 17K, and thats very scary!!!!!

I do not know, I thing I will do more search before deciding.

Anyway .. thanks for everyon, and happy new year :

I forgot to mention... I learned that Avid's NLE are a littel hard to learn, so, is there any demo version for Media Composer, or Xpress Pro for instance?

THanks

I'd call Avid and explain to them your situation, they might let you buy the academic software version for $295 of media composer so you can give it a spin before investing the big bucks on a ds. If not you can pick up an academic version of the new media composer off ebay for pretty cheap. I saw a full blown media composer 3.0 software sell a couple weeks ago for $900. Also spend the $150 and buy the Avid keyboard.

I have a lot to learn with my avid but the more I learn the more I like it. The market for editors isn't as big as FCP but there are a lot guys out there that can fly on avid's that are always looking for work.
