Great news for Canon users!

I have purchased this unit for use with my XH-A1. I have the same problem that someone else mentioned here ealier. Every time I try to use it attached to the camera, it thinks it's downloading to a computer. I have set DV control on in the XH-A1 menu and see it on the LCD screen. I've tried synchro mode and follow. I've tried every setting variation possible. Twice I got the thing to work as it's supposed to but the next time I turn the camera on, the HVR is back to not working again. It won't even work when I push the record buttons on the hvr. It records for about 1 second and then stops. I've formatted numerous brand new 32 gig sandisk exterme 3 cards. I've tried other firewire cables. I try turning the camera on first, then I try turning the HVR on first. I've tried attaching the firwire cable after each unit is on and before. No matter what I do the HVR is convinced that it's attached to a computer and it's ready to download the files. As soon as I pull out the firwire cable it shows the timecode and everything like it should. I plug the firwire cable back in and it goes back into computer mode. I was so excited to get this thing because I shoot a lot and now it's given me hours of frustrations. Please help!

Hey aly, I'm having the exact same problems. The funny thing is, the unit was working fine for several days before this happened. But now, whenever I connect the MRC1, it thinks it's connecting to a computer. After I set it to HDV, it seems ok, but then when I record, it won't record for more than a second. I reset both the MRC1 and the A1 back to factory settings, and this didn't help.

I'm not quite sure what caused it. The A1 can still I send tape footage fine to my Mac, so I presume that the firewire interface on the A1 is working. It could be a bad firewire connection on the MRC1 (that would be some shoddy QA).

I know that you already returned your unit the B&H, but I'm hoping to get to the bottom of this. I'm leaning towards an issue with the MRC1. Really tired right now though, might wait till tomorrow to figure it out.

UPDATE (SUCCESS!!):
Ok, guess I wasn't too tired to figured it out :). These are the steps I took:

- Disconnected the MRC1 from the A1 and then set the MRC1 CAMLINK to FOLLOW.
- Connected the MRC1 to the A1 (A1 was in DV Control ON) and while connected changed the CAMLINK to SYNCHRO. Voila. It records fine again.
- As long you don't touch the settings on the MRC1 and A1, it will continue to work whether or not you power down the A1 or MRC1.

My guess is that I was playing around with the MRC1 settings after I had already connected it to the A1 and messed up some internal setting for the MRC1. Hope this helps anyone else who runs into this problem!

(strikethrough isn't working)
Some more tests I'm going to run:

- Capture the A1 through firewire from another source (laptop)
- Connect the MRC1 through to a laptop and see if I can transfer files
- Use the MRC1 with another camcorder

I haven't checked yet, but can anyone who has been using the MRC1 successfully with the A1 post their firmware version?

I have a shoot coming up next week where I will probably go thru several 16Gig Compact flash cards as I fill them up. I have two cards presently. When one card is full, can I just pop it into my laptop via a card reader and copy the card's contents into the computer for later use? Or to I have to log and capture it directly into Final Cut Pro?

Secondly, if I can copy the folders or files on the compact flash card, can I use the MRC-1 device as my card reader and transfer the files directly to the computer from there? Thanks.

Yes, you can copy the mt2 files directly. No need for capture.

The MRC-1 can act as an external drive when in computer mode to transfer the files to your computer. More details in the manual on page 23.

Thanks a lot JamesC. That is great news as I only bought two 16 gig cards and am shooting hours of footage..Will need to keep pulling the files off one card to the laptop, while the other one is in use. And thanks for the Manual link. I did read the online manual but I guess I am not good sometimes comprehending instructions. I will re read it and it will make more sense after your answers. Thanks again.

Oh and the page you referred to in the manual does not correspond with my manual. I guess they are different editions or versions.

I have purchased this unit and two 32GB Transcend 133x CF cards. Used both cards once. One of them no longer works. Sony unit gives me an error message: "ERROR A:19:91" Not sure what this means, but thought people would like to know.

Is it as Great as it was first thought to be?

I haven't heard much about this lately. Could a few of you users give some feedback? Is it worth the $$$?
