I'm tired of the noise my HVX provides

Yes - synchro scan, in film cam mode. Forgot to add that while black press is the least noisiest gamma curve, color matrix should also be on normal, not Enriched or Cine!

You can save it as a scene file for quick recall.

by the way here is a little tip, I dont know what editing platform you are on but
I always run all my hvx footie through a plug in made by nattress called g smart denoise, it has worked wonders for me.... LINK:
http://www.nattress.com/Products/FinalTouch/FTGSmartDeNoise.htm

this plug in alone made me keep my hvx and not upgrade to the 170, I can get a very similay image to the 170 using this denoiser

best 150 bucks I've spent

would you happen to ahve any comparison shots?
There aren´t any on the Nattress site...

okay the shutter angle set to 350.0d dont do anything for my lighting.. it's the same at 10.0d as it is on 350.0d any tips? pretty good lighting in my room but still its so noisy! :( and i will have to get my shutter to 1/120 for not getting a laggy image.

what do you guys film on? 720P/25PN? get more lighting on 720P/50P tho'..

You have to use the SHUTTER button and the SPEED SEL buttons to make sure that you're actually selecting the syncro scan shutter.

thanks for that one mr. green.
one question tho' (actually many, but i will leave it with this one right now). But in a normal drama, filming a conversation with some arm movements and stuff, what would be the proper shutter to use, should it actually "differ" a bit? like not completely sharp as in shutter 500. but like.. 120?

For normal shooting you'd normally go with around 1/48 to 1/50, assuming you're shooting for a filmlike look. For a "video" look you'd use 1/60th.

just rent a 170 if you are on a shoot where noise is a factor

the 170 is like a different cam. it's so damn clean

Maybe in comparison with the original HVX it is, but the 170 still has a good bit of noise in most of my footage.

but the 170 still has a good bit of noise in most of my footage.

Mine too. I did some extensive shooting with it this week in SD, 720 & 1080.

The footage really is pretty noisy even with the coring adjusted as stated in other threads.

I was actually comparing the SD material shot with the 170 to my DVX100A and scratching my head...

The LCD quality, ie the quality of the LCD itself, on the 170 is really sub par for a camera in this price range, in my opinion, and i'm sure the regulars will completely disagree....

I don't mind noise, because all of my stuff just goes to vimeo. But if the image is enlarged to regular size or above (especially after the color correction that I do) the noise is barely tolerable.

I would guess that we really at the limits of what can be achieved with a 1/3 sensor and this really is as good as it gets ?

Has anyone thought about the whole process?

They take a 960x540 image,

Enlarge it to 1920x1080, then process it,

Then down sample that to 1280x1080,

Then when it is played back...they stretch that image to 1920x1080...

What would you expect it to look like?

Many skilled persons brought out the best in these cameras, beyond what probably any other camera has been through. We saw the best it could be when it first came out..that is what sold the camera.

When you are use to SD, any HD looks good.
When HD is everywhere, you realise that 960x540 is what it is...

And that is?

So many people are obsessed with the details that have nothing to do with whether or not they can shoot good footage.

You can give someone the same brush that Michelangelo used to paint the Sistine Chapel and they couldn't do diddle squat with it. Yet everyone seems to be on a quest for the holy grail of cameras as if that will somehow turn them into award winning filmmakers.

I used Sony cameras before I switched to Panasonic. I shot some great footage with them and I shot some crap with them.
Same goes for my Panasonic cameras.

I've never had anyone at a film festival where my work was playing come up to me and say they wish my film wasn't so noisy. I have had festival directors come up to me and say they always look forward to my submissions because they love my work.

So many people waste so much time debating the merits of this camera or that camera and my camera is better than yours that they forget why they have a camera.

I have yet to see any camera power itself up and shoot a great film. They're nothing more than a tool. In the hands of a competent filmmaker, any camera can create a masterpiece.

If one camera isn't right for you, buy something else.

I don't understand, why people always try to do the best with 3.000$ video camera?Of course it will be noisy, due to its price. What you pay is what you get.Yes Panasonic gave us more then 3k with hvx200(in my opionion). So do you think,in the future everyone going to have a camera for few bucks and shoot the best movie ever? Then what will do all those high pro DP's,who spend their hole life with arri?

PS: I am a owner of hvx, and i became fun of panasonic with this product.I never worry about the noise about hvx, i always planned, how can i upgrade my equipment to hpx-3000Varicam..:)

Please link to where I can buy a HVX for 3000$, for that price NO MORE ARGUING...

There are two issues that are being compared.
Obviously there are persons who can shoot better than others.
Does that make the guy who can't shoot worth a darn less of a customer?
He is still looking for the best camera for the money, and will buy it.

When the HVX200 first came out, it was great for what it did, moreso because nothing else could do what it did.

Today, to me, it and the 170 do not represent the best for the money.
Wheather I were Spielburg or a homeless guy on the corner, that doesn't make the camera
suddenly better or worse.

If everyone could use an HVX200 or HPX170 to make movies for projection, then no need to buy something more expensive.

The HMC150 is about the best camera in it's price range.
The HVX200 use to be.
What most are pointing out is that it no longer represents that for so many reasons.
For $5,600 that is a decent price..untill you have to buy P2 cards.

I bought P2 cards when they were $1,300 for 8 gig cards, and I was fine then with the price,
as there was no other option to do HD for less.

I almost bought the 170 (still had my P2 cards, and Firestore, didn't need to buy more)
But no matter how many times I look at the footage, and it isn't terrible.
Even looking at the best footage from the best camera men,
I see footage from other cameras that can do better, for less money.
I feel like I am buying sideways when I want to buy UP.

I know some will still like the P2, I even do.
If the P2 cards were $200 for 16 gig, I would be more supportive in that a viable shooing camera can be obtained under $6,000.

IF you were starting from scratch, to me, the expense vs what you get are not worth it.

I don't see how a persons skill set has anythng to do with if the camera is worth it.
If a camera operator made 10 feature films that won awards with the HVX200, that doesn't make the camera suddenly worth more money.

That guy could likely do the same with any camera.

It's like the guys who defend the HVX200, and the like are saying that if we were all painters,
we too can paint like Rembrant, if we work at our art more and stay with the pencil thin paint brush. The only problem is we are HOUSE painters, and a better brush for the task is out there.

When Panasonic offers Inexpensive P2, or a means to shoot to SDHC in a full raster format (I know the 150 does buy I want to buy UP, not sideways), maybe larger chipset, and an inexpensive means to load cards into a reader..I'll most likely be back.

Every 3-4 years I want to buy a better camera than the one I have, not spend the same 8 grand and get just the newest model.
No matter how good or bad of a camera man I am..I'll want the same.

So, what's the argument? You're upset because the 170 doesn't do what you want to do or costs more than you want to spend? Then don't buy it.
