HVX200 vs HVX200A...any suggestions for a fellow DVX100 User

Hey guys:

I got a question hope someone can help me out. I am very happy with my DVX and I am happy on how it handles at low light situation...at least to my eye, there is no huge problem.
I have been given the chance to purchace a complete HVX200 with a couple of cards and a FS-100 for what seems to be a good price. For about a $1,000 dollars more, I could get the same outfit but with the HVX200A.

Does it really make a huge difference between the two other than low light capabilities?

The low light capabilities are about the only major difference between the HVX200 and the HVX200A. The 200A is lower in noise, better in color reproduction, brighter, with a somewhat sharper LCD for better focusing.

hey barry:

i just found your review on the HVX200A but I could not find the video you had shot with the chart...do you know where I can find it?

You said in that article that the HVX200 was like ISO320 and the HVX200A was ISO500. What would you say the DVX ISO is?

...spending $1000 for better light performance is justifiable? I mainly use my DVX under studio lights....a couple of run and gun shoots under flourecent lights here and there...scratching my head if to go for the deal or better light

Not positive because it's been a few years but I have generally rated the DVX100A at an ASA of 640 @24P @1/48th shutter @ 0dB gain.

You will need more light and better lighting with HD.

I PMed you about it.
But basically, they went bankrupt and they don't work very well. Next to a P2 card their is no comparison for reliability.

I've gotten a couple of jobs where I've been hired to "try" and rebuild data shot on firestore.

here's a random company blogging about their experience with firestore which I found by googling
firestore and suck

YIKES...good stuff. Thanks for the heads up.

I will read the article...man oh man

Looks exactly like what I encountered, but for fun you should have cranked up the gain on the HVX200A until the noise was about the same as on an HVX200 (usually 6 to 9 dB). That would have shown a huge difference in brightness, for equivalent noise.

just a heads up... not sure if firestore has improved... but when fs100 was first introduced i had MAJOR problems with MULTIPLE FS100 drives. After months of patient troubleshooting, my vendor finally admitted that he wasnt surprised...that multiple customers were having terrible problems with image dropouts in all shooting environments. in fact, the vendor was requiring new customers to sign releases before purchasing the FS100. the releases stated that the buyer was buying at own risk. so...id recommend doing some research into this config. good luck. cam is beautiful whichever way you go! I ended up just getting a bunch of p2 cards.

I am probably going to give myself a year of bad luck for saying this but I was one of the first in Britain to get my hands on the FS-100 and have used it with my HVX for something like 2.5 years and not once have I had a problem.

I have had my Firewire port on my HVX go but thats about it. Now that it handles variable frame rate I find it much quicker to transfer onto my system than from the P2 cards.

Also I can record to the P2 cards at the same time knowing that I have all my footage backed up before the shoot is even over!!

So the experiences arent all bad :-)
