It's A Shame... 5D vs D90

...
It's junk and even the canon HV20 is MUCH better than the HVX200. Panasonic is practically a dead player in the video market.

Could someone please explain this to me? I am seriously considering the HMC150 which, as I understand it, produces almost the same image quality as the HVX200a which, again as I understand it, is almost the same as the HVX200 but 1 to 1 1/2 stops better in low light.

I think my D90 rocks in low light, and the 5DM2 looks even better (if only they gave it 24p... sigh... the bastards...) But I still view my D90 as being my B-Roll camera and I'm starting to find the HV20 to be too noisy in low light and too lacking in features to by my main camera.

if you get your settings right, the hvx can produce decent low light images. Not to the extent of the 5dII, but it is usable.

. . . three ccd's need a much longer flange distance, so it's not practical in a dslr. also, sensors have become so much better lately that one is usually "enough". oh, and the prism size needed if you wanted to use three full frame 24x36 sensors would make the camera waaay too big and heavy.

/matt

I'm aware that a prism block design is impractical for DSLRs. That wasn't the point of my discussion.

Anybody still talking about the HVX200? It's junk and even the canon HV20 is MUCH better than the HVX200. Panasonic is practically a dead player in the video market. The Canon 5D is not perfect but incredibly better than the HVX200

This is just an ignorant statement. I'm no fan of the HVX but even I acknowledge that it's a camera made by professionals for professionals. Calling it "junk" and trying to compare it to a $500 consumer camera is just laughable.

Ignorant or plain trolling. Anyhow i fail to see the point in such harsh statement. If you don't like or don't know how to use a tool just don't use it. The way i see it none of the camera options out there is perfect, it's all a matter of trade offs and they all have different ones.

not sure about your background.. only about mine.. same as far as statements production is concerned.. did you ever test yours by any chance?.. i'm used to say something only after to have clue about what i'm talking about.. no clue no soup.

This really depends on your point of view. Different cameras have their uses, although I wouldn't necessarily be a fan of any 1/2.7" single-sensor camera.

Again, different tools for different applications, but as far as Panasonic being a "dead player in the video market," they recently sold a ton (actually, several tons) of P2 camcorders to a couple of pretty big players: ABC and Fox. The HVX200 was very innovative for its time and I'm sure Panasonic will continue to innovate and introduce new, interesting products in future NABs to come. I assume every still and video equipment manufacturer is now at least thinking of introducing (if not already getting ready to launch) a large-sensor CMOS motion-imaging product soon.

Not sure exactly what you're trying to say here, but as a matter of fact I have used both cameras (the HVX and the HV20/HV30) extensively. The HV20 was a B-camera on several of my shoots and the last film I DPed was on an HVX. After using both cameras, I stand by my statement: the HV20 produces surprisingly good image for its price, but as a production camera it doesn't hold a candle to the HVX. Ergonomics, controls, depth of options etc. are completely inferior.

You wouldn't be princigalli under another name would you? Interesting how you just joined today and all but one of your posts seems to be cheering him on. Hmm.

no soup for you man.. i'm too much known as poster.. ask to the reduser guys.. jarred included.. go figure!

a better pic camera is always better than a better pro control camera.. where are your DP skills dude?.. i took a look on your anniversary.. not bad.. so you should figure out the better picture the better camera.. rather than the better controls the better picture.. because the better DP skills the better picture.. you do not need too much control over your camera but much better under your DP skills control.. hey i forgot.. and directing skills too.. ehehehehehe

Hahaha, did you really just said that? I mean, seriously? A professional would always ask for more control, because that's the way to get a great image. It's one sick and twisted client who gives his DP a palmcorder and says "Here, if you're so good then you can get a great image out of this."

I don't know of any professional who would choose to shoot on a camera that offers them less control over the image unless it's an aesthetic choice. Only an amateur would make that choice because they don't know what it takes to make the image looks good to begin with and it's easier just to point the camera and press record.

who said so?.. me?

I said: the better picture the better camera.. rather than the better controls the better picture.. because the better DP skills the better picture..

how would you shoot ala old film times mate?.. you wouldn't have crutches.. count on that.

Yes, because the film cameras of yore are all automatic and all you have to do is point them and press record. Who needs "crutches" like the ability to control shutterspeed and iris at the same time or professional audio and zoom ring options.

there are simple tricks.. maybe you don't know them.. do you know the word workaround?..

hvx offers an inferior pic comparing w/ any hd canon.. including the cheapest hv20.. the best for the buck.. more worthy of respect (and quality!) than the loser hvx.. actually a lot of serious shooters do not even consider hvx as hd 1080 camera.. it is known as hvx SD plus.. ehehehehehe

edit
a total failure my friend.. maybe not considering the sales.. P2 concept was and is nice.. barry did a great job here..
technically speaking.. it was a 1080 scam.. ehehehehehe

Do you know the phrase "time is money?" Why would I want to fumble around with a cellphone (so yes, I do know the trick) with an HV20 when I can just do the same thing on the HVX by flipping a switch? I can trim my lawn with a pair of scissor too, but I rather use a lawn mowner for that.

In anycase, you're obviously just trolling, and I'm more convinced than ever that you're just princigalli under another name. In which case the mod will ban you soon enough. Later.

as said.. no soup for you.. you have no idea about who you're talking about.. no connection w/ princigalli in anything other than seems obvious we both share the same opinion about hvx.. do not insist or you'll have a not cool label on you..

edit
btw.. why the ban talk?.. the mods call?.. would you suggest to ban any other w/ a different opinion than yours?

may i have my personal viewpoint?.. or only if i will change my opinion about hvx?..

may i have my personal viewpoint w/out being charged again and again as being the same poster who doesn't agree w/ you either?..

give us a break young man.. have you heard anything about freedom of speech?.. (anyway.. to be banned or not is the same.. i can register w/ different users as many times as i wish  though this would be to support miserable points such as those)

JFYI i tested the hvx intensively in 2006 !!.. i hated its lowlight noisy macroblocking performance and low resolution .. i avoided the hvx joining the red customers club since then.. and i didn't post nothing about my hvx experience.. so your trolling charge is ad hominem attack only because i have a different opinion.. and i posted it at barry's site almost three years later.. after all when hvx is outdated for newer models actually..

you're too quick to shoot.. too much as matter of fact.. go there mr DP/director.. and you'll get what you've already earned w/ your intolerance.

:banned:(from my book)

This is a nonsense discussion. Of course the handling and manual controls of the hv20 suck and of course this makes it harder to use in a professional environment. Whether it's worth it depends on personal and professional opinion as well as the situation. If you don't see both sides of the coin you're blind. /matt

disagreed in both points..

what do you know about my understanding "of that of others"?

your (not exactly only yours) mania is a fallacy.. be focused to learn enough about your DP or directing craft and you won't need pro controls more than a simple good tool.. i mean.. a suitable capture device.. everyone should be more interested to know which tool is or not suitable for the job.. more than BS pro controls.. a professional is someone who lives from his/her own craft.. no less.
