Nikon's announcement: My hypothesis

Let's assume Nikon don't have an interest going fully into videocamcorders. What they do want is to be on top of Canon and the 5D MKII. The logical solution would be, from our perspective, to have better specs in the D3x than the 5D MKII.

But it seams the D3x is a pro DSLR camera. Not aiming at all towards the videomarket.
So the next logical solution is to consider the D3x as a strictly high-end pro DSLR and upgrade D90 to have similar video specs as the 5D MKII.

I would not be surprised if the D90 gets a firmware update to 1080i/p and selectable fps and manual controls of shutter etc. This would match the 5D MKII and supersead it with 24/25fps.

I think all of us feel a bit frustrated to have the beautifule images D90 delivers and at the same time have it crippled with low bitrate and eveything else that's amiss with it.
Nikon knows all of this and if it's possible with firmware they will do it! Just to beat Canons 5D MKII!!!

I doubt they'll offer such a significant upgrade for the D90. If 1080p were possible, they probably would have implemented it to begin with.

I'd say the most likely scenario is a successor to either the D700 or the D300 with a 1080p mode. Not that it matters because by the time those boys are available I'll be with Canon :nads:

I dunno, the market usually doesn't adhere to supply and demand unfortunately. Look at the succesor to the Canon XH-A1s, they are almost identical, in fact I don't even know what the differences are. That is no answer to the HVX2000. I know they are classes apart, but that release by canon in their prosumer camcorder department was pointless/ridiculous.

I hope Nikon does release these updates though, wouldn't that be a wild event for d90 owners like us

Nikon are not going to upgrade a $999 camera to compete with a $2700 camera from Canon... it makes no business sense. They will bring out a camera in the same price bracket and try to better it slightly.

My view is that Nikon do not quite have the technology ready yet and know if they release a fully fledged 1080p camera that suffers the same issues as the D90 does, it could lead to them getting a bad reputation in an industry that they have seldom touched.

Canon had their video department to use as a stepping stone, so probably got the 5D II running a bit smoother than Nikon could.

Just my 2 cents

As a wrote, it could be 1080i which has about same bandwidth as 720p. The scaling artefacts might be less thou. If Nikon don't have anything in the pipe for the coming year (with video) it would make sense to make the D90 kill some of the 5D MKII sale.

I agree - Nikon ought not release a pro-level 1080p jello-cam..... it would do more harm than good....

I still maintain that Nikon could make a large dent in the low end of the market by repackaging the D90 in a motion-friendly package and include a few essentials such as XLR audio and full manual control.
Even if they didn't fix the jello, such a camera would still sell like hotcakes to the existing D90 market-base.
Sell it for $1500 and call it even :cheesy:

Every day I see better and better D90 footage online as people learn to work within the limitations of the jello-cam and the appalling camera controls.
Imagine the possibilities if Nikon would only add about $500 worth of R&D and industrial design. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Nikon - are you listening????????? :undecided

I think the firmware upgrade is wishful thinking. XLR is just not even worth thinking about cuz it'll never happen to a d90 which primarily is a photography camera first. XLRs dont enter the picture until we get into the realm of prosumer camcorders. but im sure you already know this.

Looks like Nikon is dropping the ball. Lets see if they announce anything else on Tuesday.

hopefully it's just a matter of time till some hacker fixes the things in D90 that are firmware fixable yet we may never get from Nikon itself.

D3x = $8,000. Are they kidding? Are they oblivious to what's happening in the market? This is just such a colossal marketing blunder, I can't believe it. When the Canon 1DsIV is released, that will be even more apparent. In what universe is this camera worth $8,000?

The camera isn't designed for the hobbyist. Even for the intermediate photog. It is designed to compete in the medium format market. 8,000 for a camera that can compete with the 20,000 hasselblad is a good camera. It will be used by photo journalists, advertising firms, fashion photographers.

People who get paid for photography.

You've missed my point completely:

Nikon ought to repackage the D90 in a motion-friendly form-factor, i.e. a box.
This would certainly allow for XLR's, amongst other things.
