Shooting a church Service/ Play?

Hi

I've never shot a live events. It's always be me in a controlled setting...

but this must change.

I've just been given a job at a church to shoot 3 services and one play. How should i go about shooting them. Just give me some general roles on shooting live events...

Thanks!

Hello creepyclownproduction's,
I generally find out as much as I can about the event that I will be shooting than I adjust my shooting to that. What type and how much lighting will I need, the order in which the program will run, things like that, but I always shoot 60i with events.

Existing light in live productions is almost always a problem. Talk to the lighting board operator about necessary ambient levels - just because the light level looks good to the eye, does not mean it will be enough for the camera.

Recording sync sound from the FOH board is pretty standard. Find out if you can take a mono or stereo feed from the board and if possible, have the engineer run it through some compression before getting to your camera.

Multiple cameras make your post production life much much easier (even if they do not match and they are unmanned).

I agree that 60i makes most sense for live events, sometimes I use a non-standard frame rate to increase the iso of the camera. I go as low as 1/30 when shooting 60i.

Remember to white balance and black balance before starting.

If you want to do more church work, you might want to adapt your name to CC productions or Gentle Clown Productions or Cuddly Clown Productions.

I guess you could run a XLR OUT of the sound board depending on how the board is set up. What you are more likely to encounter is using a 1/4" jack to XLR cable and taking that out of the board. No matter how you do it, make sure that you flip the switch on the camera to line level instead of mic level or you will have major problems.
