~ A Little Mouth to Feed ~ SLAMDANCE,TORONTO AFTER DARK, etc.

That would be awesome to see you guys there, it would be a DVXuser power showing.

Sundance gets 5K shorts a year for 80 - 90 slots. Slam dance gets between 3.5-4K, 70-75% of what Sundance gets for about the same number of slots.

Regarding features, Alveraz, I think they get about the same but Slamdance screens less, so chances are harder there and I hear you have to be a first time feature filmmaker I think for Slamdance.

That's what I heard, someone said they pick less than 20 features, not sure if that's correct but wtf, I gave it a shot anyway. You never know if you don't try :) But this is about YOU, so bravo again man, bravo!

Hopefully I can make it about learning how to promote at a festival and stuff.

Zak's already been a big help and I'll post what he's told me here. But man I don't know how that guy finds the time.

Look at the 17 or so social profiles he's gotten IFHY out there / on:

Looks good, plays jerkily on my browser though. Maybe it's my connection.

What's the story on Slamdance? They run concurrently with Sundance in the same town? Was there some backlash or something against Sundance?

here's the best
thanks, it's hard to make a teaser even for a 9 minute film - you only have 9 scenes with 4 having big reveals that you don't want to give away. And with only 4 characters and only two of them getting killed, you can't really show much of that aspect. So that's why the one person is dragged off at the end without really showing the face.

It's an "alternative festival" established in 1995. I worked at Sundance in 1998 and they were pretty small I think, then. But that year they screened Matt Stone and TRey Parker's Cannibal the Musical while Sundance screened Orgazmo and according to Matt & Trey, Slamdance is way cooler :). I'm sure there is a bit rivalry, but on the surface they are very cordial and I think do in truth work together if they can. Sundance programmers claim that when they have something really cool that they can't program they will pass it to Slamdance and vice versa.

I think rather than backlash it's sponging off the fact that all of these media and industry people are in park cities for those dates, so it makes Slamdance, in terms of industry exposure, almost identical to Sundance, and in some niche areas maybe even a bit better because the industry is looking for more left field (higher risk?) hits out of Slamdance.

The short film that Napolean Dynamite was based on premiered at SLamdance, where thy got financing for their feature, and then premiered it at Sundance a couple of years later.

Christopher Nolan made his debut at Slamdance with his micro budget first film "Following" and then came back with for his feature "Memento" also to premiere at Sundance.

So it's just a slightly more punk-rock, less studio or mini-studio festival than Sundance, created and run "by filmmakers for filmmakers." Don't get me wrong, if Sundance calls (where I submitted this film also), then I call Slamdance and say "sorry", but in some ways it's "cooler" to be at SLamdance and the industry is looking for the next cool different left field things there like Napoleon Dynamite - small film with a big jackpot, vs. the safer bets at Sundance.

Also there is supposedly more hand holding for the short filmmakers by the Slamdance staff - trying to get you to meet the right people, etc. and every short, form my understanding, has it's own screenings, it's own talkback sessions etc. vs. being bundled with several other shorts or packaged before a feature at Sundance. Supposedly for the little guy a better time is more likely to be had at Slamdance.

Again. No question if I got a call from Sundance - you have to do that. But this, though slightly less so in prestige, may pragmatically turn out to be far better than Sundance.

Ummm Jack...I started to post some. I got 3 up...and now I have no clue...at all..where the frig they are...lol.

I went to member upload center and think I should have put them in my album. Help!

Michele
PS...got original sizes without words for you if you need them!

Michele this one's in you're gallery, but I don't see any others.

Reason I'm dressed like this - posing for the "family photos" that dressed the set - see background in screengrab below. I think John Hudson photoshopped these.

Did you ever double check to see if I got you original copies on everything?

yeah I got them thanks very much, just swamped.

Note the garage / soundstage, the ceilings and walls are painted black for the scene where Clovis goes into the darkened bedroom to meet the baby. We wanted it to be all silhouette with no spill so everything went black.

Got my filmmaker welcome packet from Slamdance today which they forgot to send me. Now I must scramble to get everything they need to them which is mostly late, since they forgot to send me this thing until I called and said "er - um, am I still in or did you guys just forget to send me the confirmation email after the phone call."

well...just glad you have it. If there is anything I can help do....just ask. I am still stuck at home a lot doing therapy from my surgery...

and cousin Daryle is going to keep us hooked up i think....hope you got that other person added!

Hey Brandon.

one of the following:
"The Gallery Screening Room will show NTSC Digi-Beta, Beta SP or Dv-cam"
Just got their info today as stated, so I have to talk to Tech Guru's Barry and/or David about costs and benefits of each.

Able Cintech is about $250 an hour for transfer. Which for a 9 min film won't be that bad. Also I found a low end shop here in NYC that did a guys whole feature to DVcam for a flat $200. Finally I have a good relationship with a couple of clients of mine here in NYC that have a lot of these decks and might be able to run something off for me.

Congrats on the acceptance Jack, I totally forgot how good this film was until I saw your new teaser and was reminded. Good luck!

woot woot

Looks like I am going to Slam Dance with ya Jack...just got a few possible leads on crash space. 2 emails and one phone call and still waiting for some replies...

Park City watch out...Flora has a baby and she is coming to your town...ha ha ha
