Hi guys,

I saw some topics about buying a tripod but I want to take it a step back, because Im very new to it.

Which things are important for buying a tripod for the DVX100?

-the legs?
-weight?

I read some good things about the Manfrotto 501HDV Kit, is it any good?

Or do you have any other suggestions, I have a budget of 500 euro and I want to invest in a good tripod for interviews and concerts.

The 501HDV (I think that actually stands for heavy duity, not high def) is a good entry level head. Make sure you dont skimp out on legs, though. I made that mistake and sorely regret it. Post a link to the kit you were looking at, theres a few 501HDV kits I think.

I like the 501 and 503 kits, if you have the money go with the 503 but you can get a lot of value out of either one.

Basicly im gonna use it for interviews. What are the better things between 503 and 501 can you explain that?

I'm not even sure the 503 is true fluid head, I've got one & though it's ok, having tried the libec ls38 at a similar price i wish I had the libec, much smoother

Is there a link or special topic where I can read about the differtent HEADS? because I really don't know anything about it :(

May I ask what mistake that was? I'm awfully curious

Exactly. Those legs your looking at should be better then mine, mine are really a truly epic fail. For stills there fine but I'm not shooting stills here... I actually almost replaced mine with those exact legs but opted for a mic instead heh.

what kind of stuff do you shoot? i'm having a hardtime deciding between the 501/503 and the ls 38 though i'm sort of leaning towards the ls38. i mostly shoot sports, concerts and live events so i need a head with really smooth pans and tilts.

similar to you, doc stuff & events, i would go with the libec, the 503 seems to stick & jump a bit particularly when trying to get a slow smooth start to a movement

I saw the 503 in action for interviews and stuff look pretty decend for me, think im gonna go for that one.. but damn 700 euro.. crazy

The Manfrotto 503 is without a doubt the worst piece of video equipment I have ever owned. Note that I do use Manfrotto products for my still photo work - tripods, heads, etc., and don't have any problems...and would buy them again. However, after a about a year of moderate use...the 503 started to exhibit a lot of "spring back" and "wobble" at the end of pans and tilts...nearly ruining a project I have been working on. Finally I just got fed up and bought a Sachtler DV6SB...which works like a dream.

501 head is no good, and not a true fluid head. The 503 is nice but does not have a 75mm ball joint making it harder to level. I{ recently purchased a libec ls38 and love it! Very smooth, easy to use, and easy to level. You will not regret it. The only problem I have is that you can not change the resistance in which you can pan. But for the price you can not beat it!
