150.. initial impressions out of box

Guys.. The happy day has arrived and the 150 showed up on time and in the smallest box. I was expecting the size box of the HVX.. but this thing is Small. that was my first impression... then when I picked up the box, I was like.. mmmm, is there something even in there. Man, the camera is light and small... It totally reminds me of the DVX in form and handling and overall look. Still has the HVX legacy but it's a new beast..

THANK HEAVENS for the LCD. I haven't shot anything yet, but the LCD is light years ahead of that crap that I have to deal with with the HVX. Yes, I said it. CRAP!!!! I love my HVX but the LCD is like an abomination, maybe a bit strong, but close.

There's a lot to love about this camera in just how things look and feel. It does seem a bit more consumer and plasticy in terms of the HVX, but I'll take them as an advantage. Things seem to be laid out a lot better.. more compact and man... I just cant' wait to shoot some handheld stuff. This will be a dream.

So, if anyone wants to see something specific in terms of footie.. let me know. I will do a HVX vs 150 or intercut stuff. and I should have a 200a to throw into this as well. Overall.. on initial impressions... I'm stoked... and I also remember that this has a waveform monitor...... that's sweet babe.... Today I'm going to read the manual cover to cover and then start to shoot the babe...

cheers all and thansk for this forum and people for helping me decide what to get.

Hi! Congrats with your new cam.

I'm very interested in HMC-150 vs. the HVX200 (not A) comparisons. I have the chance to buy a used HVX-200 with 4 batteries and 16GB P2 for 2/3 the price of a new HMC-151 and I really don't know what to do.

I was using a HVX200 at work prior to getting the HMC150. Your HVX deal sounds sweet. Is low light capability an important factor in your camera decision? I personally think that the HMC definitely handles lowlight better than the 200. Is the cost of recordable media a concern? Do you plan on shooting in both SD and HD? SDHC cards (up to the 16gb size) are relatively cheap online, while P2 cards tend to be a bit pricey. The HMC only shoots to SD cards, while the HVX shoots to P2 and shoots to tape for SD. Do you like/plan on doing handheld shots? The HMC weighs a pound or two less than the HVX, and 75 minute performances don't seem quite as much of a chore handheld anymore.

Hope that helps? (my 2 cents)

Yes, all tips helps, m.t.! :)

Low light capability is not VERY important to me. But I'll probably do some outside night shots with lights of course. The camera is going to be mostly used for filming ski-movies.

This is what type of filming I'm going to do.
And if you go to about 02:08 in the movie, you can see what I mean with night shots.

The cost of recordable media is of course a concern, but the used HVX follows with 2x 8GB P2-cards. I will probably then invest in one more 16GB card at least. But I'm pretty sure I can get one pretty cheap.
I'm not going to shoot SD. And yes, I'm going to do a lot of handheld shots out in the snow.

Congrats Justyn.
These are great little image makers.

@ sindrejibb
Keep in mind that part of low light ability is to bring out details in the shadows of well lit shoots...

It sounds like the HMC-150 maybe will be the better choice for me then? The used HVX will be pretty much the same price as the new HMC-150 in the end anyways because of the expensive P2-cards. The good thing with the HVX is that it comes with 4 batteries and 2 chargers, which sounds pretty good.

Cheers ALL>..

I TOO was on the fence about getting a used 2nd HVX or this new cam. I can tell you I"m highly impressed with this little beauty. There's so many upgrades over the stock HVX that makes purchasing a used HVX kind of a daft idea after this.. since I have one. This 150 will be the run and gun all day long camera I've been dreaming of. I also feel that the LCD alone is worth getting over the HVX. I am constantly sickened by the old HVX LCD. The new version on these cams is so good you don't even need the sharpening on... on my old HVX, you had to keep it on to even tell if you were in focus. On the 150, you don't need it and it really makes the video look harsh... something that you really couldn't tell on the old HVX>

I haven't dealt with the post workflow but I'm stoked about this. The size, the layout of the controls, and the low light is amazing. Today I was shooting inside my house with just standard overhead lighting and sunlight and I was able to get a 1/250 shutter shot with some zebras... amazing..!!!! Finally low-light capability without adding gain and all that noise.

I will do some comparision shoots with the beloved old HVX and the new boy. After shooting a bit today.. i even thought about selling my HVX and accessories. Anyone interested? lol

cheers all!

Better get ready for some bomb footy coming up this season! (i'll be filming snowboarding) but im excited to see your stuff!!! i cant wait to get mine and not a fake one;) lol

nah... Well, I was just doing my research. I got mine today and will be shooting something soon. I'm going to put up a series and see what camera people think is what... so far I'm really impressed with a few things.

The handholding comfort is greatly improved over the 200 BUT... It doesn't seem to have the mass and the bulk that I used to get more steady handheld shots in the telephoto range. I'll have to find the balance with the camera.. as it's not the same at all.

LOve the LCD and the low-light option is finally viable.. and even the Gain... that was a forbidden word with the HVX.

Just wondering, for those that owned the original DVX and now the 150, is there any improvement with the OIS or is it essentially the same?

Our big cameras with the Fujinon lens don't have OIS and I can tell you that unless you're on a solid tripod the telephoto ranges are pretty useless. I used to think that the heavier the camera the more stable it would be, however it wasn't till after I got heavier cameras that I really began to appreciate lighter cameras :)

Remember it's not the weight of the camera that gives it stability but it's size, particularly the more you can hold it away from it's centre of gravity, hence why devices like the Fig Rig & Multi-Rig work ;)

K one question....is there anything that doesnt come with the camera that is nessecary for right out of the box shooting? i kno it doesnt come with sd card but doest it atleast come with a battery + charger? im ordering it from amazon. thanks

Congrats on the cam. I remember drooling over the HVX when the specs were first announced, but reviews like this make me glad I waited.

I can't say I compared them side by side, but seems about the same. To be honest, handheld 24p felt like it could be shakier to me, but I am pretty sure the extra sharpness is just exaggerating it more to my eyes. I'm talking about walking around holding it up in one hand. I would imagine any cam would have trouble in that unideal situation, but if you have to, at least it is light and fits the hand well.

Barry is correct. I would highly recommend the large battery if you plan to venture away from an outlet for any extended time, it is very power hungry.

Is the camera's serial number on the box or on the camera.
I'm getting mine next week but my friend is too lazy to carry it with the box.
Thanks

Ps I'll have to talk with my friend when he gets back.

In both, Mine had the serial number under the viewfinder (took me 10 minutes to realize that it was there..) and in a bar code on the box.
