SCARLET / EPIC swiss army knife camera details announced

OK so ...

  • 2/3" scarlet $2500
  • nikkor f mount $500*
  • Red LCD $1750
  • red dual brick $1500
    power pack
  • (no view finder)

$6250
all of those prices may be old except for the scarlet, or maybe not even applicable to the scarlet it's all Redone stuff.

  • HPX 170 $5200
  • Letus Extreme $1200
    (no rods)
$6400

What else? What's the cheapest Scarlet you can put together? What am I forgetting.

I'm hoping the Scarlet 2/3" with fixed zoom will be $6K or lower because the "FLY BY REDWIRE FEATURE" I'm speculatin, may mean a servo controlled lens.

2/3" HPX 500 with a zoom was plenty of DOF fore me when I used it. So I would prefer an electronically controllable lens on a 3K 2/3" camera than still lenses on it.

It is interesting.. pretty amazing in fact... but as jason said... untill there is a "buy now" button... it is still just vapour ware.

If it is released, say, early 2010... you have to wonder what sony, panasonic, canon, nikon etc will have launched by then, within the $5k-$10k range.

I can see them hitting at least 3k/1-60fps by then and ironing out all the DSLR video bugs.

I do love the idea of a component based, upgradable camera though.

Brilliant idea. I will really be excited when this comes down from the land of unicorns and good ideas and becomes a product.

Word. I'm super stoked about all this, but am not freaking out since the current projections are a year away. i would also be interested to see what the price comes out to once you have added all the needed accessories...

Either way super sweet! I just hope the Scarlet is available before 2010. it will be very interesting to see what those other camera manufacturers do if Red hits one out of the park and can meet the demand (no long back orders)

Hahaha. ARRI just announced that they will buy the Digital Cinema division of Dalsa (Origin).

I guess they did not see IT yet.

Ill be getting one of those 2/3" scarlet's when they are finalised (personally apart from all the other goodies, will be cool to have a company called scarlet digital cinema that actually has a scarlet in its aresenal) - wont be selling my 500 to do so, thats a cam that does a whole range of things the scarlet can only dream about.

Be interested to know though if I can power a scarlet with a vmount battery? Or stuck with red battery?

Those specs are fantastical, I dont think anyone was expecting that fully. I have beef. If you go full frame in scarlet you don't get any variable frame rates passed 30? You need to step up 10+ thousand dollars to do that? Seems a bit odd to me. I cant wait for duke nukem.... I mean scarlet and epic to be release.

Oh... how sick to death I am of RED... Is this supposed to be a joke???

Who even cares about the 20k mysterium badoozle what what???

I AM RELEASING A CAMERA - IT WILL BE 100K COUNTRY SIZED SENSOR AND DO A GAZZILION FPS AND COST ONLY $6000!!

WHATS THE POINT?? ARE WE ALL THAT CHILDISH AND STUPID???

Their track record is HOPELESS.... Have they even completed their orders for red one???

Anyone who indulges in this is plain BORED!

I just talked to 2 red owners: one has 1 the other has 20 RED ONE !!! yes 20 of them !
I dont know what problem you have, the red is being used daily in film making and rental places are making money with it.
I have several companies in USA that I deal with , that sell me a non existing product and I bought it before it even existed, then was happy to get it 2 years later for 1/3 rd of the price. Its a valid business model and there are still a lot of honest entrepeneurs out there ( thank god).

I am so glad they didint stick with the original intended $3k pocket sized hv20 kinda pocket camera for soccer mum. I can live without those superfast frame rate as long as I got a big sensor in my camera that I can use with cheap SLR lenses.

Overall, KUDOS TO RED.

Those are very impressive specs and design. I must say though that in my 30 year commercial photography career, I have invested in "state of the art" technology" only to be disappointed in short time, as the company went out of business or didn't have the big company finances to fully support the product or the software.

Some examples:
Bought "revolutionary" image editing software for professionals only, for $3500. A year later it was brought out to the general public for $500. Now no one uses it.

Presently have a $22,000 Medium Format German made still photography digital back that produces 256 mb 16 bit files..HOWEVER after only 3 years of ownership, the company states that the digital back will not work with the newer Intel Mac computers. They have no intention of upgrading their software. So now we users are hunting ebay for older Mac computers as insurance in case our older Macs quit.

Now I am not knocking this company in any way. I am even interested in some of these products as a purchase, even after being burnt with smaller, lesser known companies, in the past.

I guess what I am saying is that I am a bit dubious about all this. Suppose we all invested in the equipment and then the company (hopefully not) goes belly up? Who services the equipment then?

Just some food for thought.

Red Electronic (AF) Zoom lenses for the FF35 sensor... That's interesting.

I guess the data rate at which you read out of the sensor, move around and encode is granted by the body, hence the gap between epic and scarlet. It makes a lot of sense to me. Maybe you can half the resolution to double the top framerate you can achieve like you could on the Red One.

It looks like they think the S35 scarlet will be the most popular considering the order of the estimated availability dates.

I applaud RED and I'm seriously looking to purchase. But I still have questions. Some of the most importaint things aren't to me what the body looks like, or what the "horsepower" is. I want to know the non-flashy details.

The biggest question I have is not the size of the sensor or the price. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE CMOS ROLLING SHUTTER. If I buy this $7K Scarlett with PL Mount "Brain" will the Sensor be fixed? Can I do whip pans and strobe flashes?

I mean 5K is overkill when you only need 2K for 35mm blow up. And I like having 3K, so at least you have some cropping room in case a boom come into the shot. 11+ stops is awesome, since film is averaging 12 to 14 stops.

But can we control the "curve" of the camera before the image is saved. Curving out the cam lets us control the highlights more.
Can we control the sharpness, color, saturation, program in several versions of these for multiple users?
Do RED's lenses "breathe" how sharp are they? What are their costs?

Someone already talked about other current "working options"
Convergent Designs 100MBit CF system + EX1 + Letus + Lenses = approx $15K for almost 2K near perfect picture.

The scarlett starts at $2.5K, but it's not usable. How much equipment will make it usable? What if someone doesn't want to record in REDCODE can they record in another format?
How does it hold up to moisture, heat and cold?
What are all the prices for every piece of equipment?
Does RED have any plans for a credit system, 12 months 0% interest?
What is the low lux rating with say a RED 50mm at f1.4 / Nikon 50mm at f1.4 / Canon 50mm at f1.4 ?
What is the Color Temp of the Sensor?
I guess the max frame rate for say the PLMount Scarlett is 30fps at 5K, but does it shoot 60fps at 2.5K ?
What variable sizes can each sensor shoot in, some need to be divided in half to work properly, i.e. 5K to 2.5K to 1.25K.
What about noise, interference from magnets, cellphone signals, etc. Anything that would hamper the recording process.
How about a manual? I've heard RED users complain that they have to use RED User to get info and customer support (user support).

Pictures are good, but I need an itemized list of features like Canon / Panasonic / Sony do. I don't need marketing and PR, I need specs. If they could list those, that would be awesome.

Just some perspective, RED 5 pcs PL prime lens is going to be retailing at $20k.

RED pro 18-85 zoom t 2.9 is retailing at $ 10k.

Even at minimum, if you get Zeiss SLR prime lenses ; 28mm , 50mm , 85mm , 100mm, they are all going to cost you ~ $6k.

2 of the greatest assets of RED are huge sensor with shallow DOF and REDCODE RAW capabilities.

2 of the greatest disadvantages of RED are CMOS rolling shutter (If they use global cmos shutter, it would have been on the promo) and POST (its a huge and long tedious process).

There's a reason why Red is a Pro Cinema company. Its not for everybody on the street like the HV30 or hvx200.

I don't know what will be the interest in including still image function. 4mp for the lower end scarlet. Better not including still function at all! I had big expectations since there was a big buzz that red would make the perfect hybrid system(photo video)So in my opinion it is no better than the canon with the 5Dmk!!:awesome still camera with crippled video, and in the low end scarlet: Maybe good video with crippled still image. So basicly it's just more of the same.
Bummer
Things change fast i am curious to see in a year time what else will be in the market in the same price range.

Excuse me, but the still image capability is NOT crippled. With all of the Epic/Scarlet brains, the full pixel count of the sensor is being used all of the time.

Ex.: 3072*1620 = 4976640 = 4.98 MP

Honestly, why would you need more than 5 MP for stills anyway? What kind of photography do you want to do on a low-end Scarlet? 5 MP is perfectly suitable for everyday prints. It's not like the low-end Scarlet is intended to be a medium format camera. Let me remind you that Canon's first professional DSLR, the EOS-1D, boasted a mere 4.1 MP.

A 28k camera can change everything in terms of framing. Amazing, the idea of shooting masters and ultimately using a close up. Incredible stuff!

5mp is ok, but, I imagine, quite a few of us here are both videogrpahers and photographers... or at least dabble in both.

what if, by the time scralett is out, nikon are offering a 21mp still image camera with 3k/60fps video for a similar price (a quite resonable expectation, I think)

It is going to be a very interesting 12-24 months in our industry and I will be seeing what is on the horizon before investing into any one brand
