How much to sell Avid system for?

Hi-

I have an Avid system, Media Composer, about two years old. I need to sell it, and was wondering how much I should list it for. In addition to here, mandy.com and craigslist, anywhere else I should consider advertising it? Thanks.

Bob

Not sure what to price without seeing any hardware specs?

I sold an old Meridian System through TVPRO Gear. They broker your used gear to buyers for a percentage. It was great. The system actually went overseas to Afghanistan.

You say it is a media composer system, does it have the adrineline hardware or only software based? What version is the software? What are the PC specs? Details please.

Don't forget Avid dropped the price of the media composer software 50% in the last few months. Ouuch

ebay is your best bet. It'll be hard to get more than 10k for it, unfortunatly.
If ya do, lemme know. I have a $40k boat anchor too.

OT:
Grinner, I got a quote from my sales person today for a fcp mac system: 8 cores, two 30'' monitors, dual link dvi, 16 GB of ram... its looking very tempting for Christmas :)

well dont hold out, man... how much!?
It's amazing how far the dollar goes in a FCP suite. Also kind of cool how capable a lil FCP suite can be.
Amazing that's where we have to go when we outgrow Avid now. I recall a day when FCP was an introductory product while Avid sat atop a virtual mountain.

yes, yes, shame on you Avid, I just cant afford to troubleshoot you anymore. You should be paying me.

Well for the dream system Im looking at 1 stack of high society. just over $10k.
- 2x QC 2.8 with 320GB os drive
- (3) Apples sata 1TB drives
- (4) 4GB Kingston ram sticks (saving about $2500 verses apple ram) equals 16GB
- (2) Apple cinema 30'' displays
- (1) PNY NVIDIA Quadro FX4500 w/ Dual link DVi (4 ports)

I also have another quote for around $6k, less the fancy graphics card, and only (1) 30'' monitor. I want to load it with FCP studio and Shake, and maybe Adobe? And yeah about the capability, for a few thousand more, I can add the black magic card and a Panasonic 17" monitor for real time output.

I was thinking about new furniture, but I might just flip a coin between that and this lol

Hey Grinner,

I'm sorry to hear that someone from Avid ran off with your wife. If it happened to me, I guess I'd be bitter as well. Out here in Hollywood, Avid is still the industry standard for many reasons, some of which are:

- It is faster. (I estimate by 30 to 40%.)
- It is frame accurate. (Ever noticed in FCP how sometimes when you render an effect it will skip a frame?)
- You can offline at low rez and then online flawlessly without redoing your motion effects, etc.
- Avid Unity. (Nothing that Apple or 3rd party vendors have come up with comes close to doing what Avid Unity can do.)

I could to sit here and add to this list, but I have to go off to my high paying union editing job.

In reference to the original poster's question, in addition to the web sites listed, you should try posting on CreativeCow.

I'd like to add - while you're visiting the Cow take a few minutes to browse the FCP forum. FCP users never have problems.
Better yet, sit down and edit a project on FCP - enjoy the rendering!

This thread is about selling used NLEs. I am a huge Avid fan but if we are to debate FCP vs Avid it should be in a new thread.

I was just thinking the other day that the one thing the internet needs more of is Avid vs FCP arguments. God noes this topic has not been covered enough.

which is it... a union gig or or a high-paying job?
lol
I can't afford to work for union rates, man. Hence outgrowing Avid, I guess.

I just sold Media Composer 3.0 software only for $721 here on ebay :(. Shrink wrapped 3.0 boxes going for $900 to $1250 on ebay currently.

lol thats what I was thinking. I don't work for high paying union rates, i do higher paying rates of my own.

Regarding Avid vs. FCP arguments about which is better...those are old arguements, what people (many) are saying now is FCP is better, end of story. I've worked on both platforms for the past 4 years. I can vouch.

I bought a used Xpress system here on dvxuser, it worked out that they were in Chicago, and us in the suburbs. I upgraded it to MC 3.05 and its now faster than my other one. You may want to put an ad in the MARKETPLACE forum. For reference, it was an HP 8400, ANALOG Mojo, audio board, monitors, everything except hard drives for $5000, and it was in June 08.
