hey stole this topic for myself. i just got a dvx and need a tripod to film. i film a lot of skating and snowboarding, so something durable. I have no more than 200 dollars. i was looking at the davis & Sanford f18 (i think from bh for 200).

So anyone have suggestions?

Thanks

I own the tripod (had similar predicament) your looking at and well...for starter's it's a $200 tripod, so don't expect too much. But you can do much worse in that price range (stay away from varizoom's $2-300 tripod) the pan/tilt speed is controlled by how hard you can push, but its still pretty smooth. The legs get stuck and won't collapse/expand w/o a bit of elbow grease. I'd say my biggest complaint is that the head is really crowded. But overall, it is one of the better tripods for $200.

This is the newer model of the tripod setup I use with my DVX.

It's the perfect size and weight. The 701 head is very reliable and smooth. I would hold for a bit and save up a little more, as you can see by the price, and get a tripod that will last for a while. You won't regret it!
yeah a little spendy.

yeah i know i should probably but since a tripod isnt a HUGE need for me just like once a week or something i would rather not spend to much on it. 200 is the max i would like to spend.

any more recomendations?

I've been using a Libec TH-650 with my Sony FX7 to shoot surfing. It's a little bit plasticy and might not be durable enough if that is the main thing you want, but for $180 at B&H i think it's a steal - they have it listed as the Libec TH-M20 or something like that. It's a lightweight pod and it aslo comes with a carry bag so it's great for shooting action sports where you are constatnly repositioning.

Also check out the Mathews M25.

I was thinking spending some money on a 501 head but i dont know what legs i could get. I guess i could get a little more from christmas. But i think i was going to get a 501 off ebay.

But anybody want to suggest a pair of legs for a 501?

Thanks

i have the calumet 7500 legs with my 501 head and they work ok as good cheap legs to start off with but it sometimes takes me a while to get the head level they are nice and light weight also

okay im going to need a tripod soon. and i guess i will buy used, but what to get. i still only have 200 at max. i need something to hold off i guess untill i can come up with 600 but i want something decent

I ordered "Davis & Sanford PROVST7518B Professional Video Tripod and Head with ball leveler" for my DVX and I am very pleased. It's heavy duty, very smooth, comes with a bag, $194 from Amazon. I think you can either get it with or without the leveler, i like that feature so I got that version. You will be pleased if you got something similar, they have very good products from what I have read. I was in the same boat as you, and I researched it for a few weeks, very happy with my choice! I use mine to film surfing, and even with those heavy sea breezes, that thing is rock solid! Let us know how it works out.
