Routine - Test Shoot Ungraded Opinions

Hey guys .. only had the canon xl-2 for a week now .. I run a independent Production company with my mate David we want to get another 2 xl2s but something is bothering us. have a look at this test shoot we put together and let me know what you think. its nothing serious btw . and we are just waiting on the letusEx to get here if your wondering hey dof much.

Ungraded so please dont judge based on it looking like shi*ty england, We know it looks like britain.

any opinions would be taken on board.. we know the begining in the kitchen looks like ass, i think lack of lighting there were 3 windows and our spot lamp so we tried not to over expose but looks like we did the oposite ,.

also only the 2nd week of having it so still fine tuning it. if anyone knows why we are getting this cross hatch effect in the begining let me know what you think is causing it .. low skin detail ? hmm i just dont know .

Lol Ok Not bad considering you have only had the xl2 for a few days. Is this a mock up trailer or sequence from a film? if its a trailer it needs work if its from a film then...eh?

Lighting wise it is rather dark so your results are typical. Xls don't shoot well in low light conditions, that's why if you shoot even an interior night scene in a TV sitcom or drama, you wouldn't believe how bright and well-lit the set is compared to the end result in post but I think I would worry more about the cinematography of your shots! Read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_of_thirds.
You mentioned getting another xl2 and letus? personally I would hold back on getting such an expensive peice of gear just yet, its not going to make you a better filmaker. Take a look on these forums, there is alot of good 'almost holywood' looking stuff done without a 35mm adapter. Why? Cinematography and good lighting. Try standing further back and zooming in to achive that shallow DOF look your after for; now perhaps?

A few minor problems, like the outdoor shots are over-exposed. Did you have the iris all the way open? or a low frame rate? also you didnt seem to white balance outside but now Im being an A hole :lipsrseal

The editing is nice, although the music is actually produced by Harry Gregson Willams. Its from the film 'Man on Fire', although it seem's cut up from various cue's of the score which works well with the sequence.

Nice effort. Keep trying

oh and don't blame Britain and dont blame the camera:Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

Wow thank you for all your kind words :-/ and yes I know the rule of thirds lol and yeah we messed around the other day trying to get a 35mm look but the distance u had to be to get it was to much. As u can imagine zooming in that far is not an ideal way to shoot. And if you read my post you would of seen it say how I knew the lighting was low. I thought it was not enough and dave reckoned it was. Only in post was it apparent. And you do have a good eye because the shutter speed was slowed down for the jacket bit and was forgotten about. But ey only had the cam a week. And it ain't exactly shoot directly out of the box. But I'm happy the things that u picked upon were the same as mine.
