So is it perhaps better then to just focus on writing and selling the scripts for indies, leave the indie filmmaking to the studios' indie divisions? Or, can an indie-filmmaker-wannabe still make a buck making a good $50k indie film and selling it to a distributor when finished? I am confused on this (the odds of selling a $50k indie), or at least uncertain. I would love to make an indie, honestly, it sounds really fun, the ultimate art form, but to put $50,000+ of my own money on the line and two years of work writing the script, pre-prod, shooting, post, I just might decide the reward:risk ratio is just too low.
Honesty appreciated in replies for this concern, because lots of [my] money and [my] time is on the line if I go down the path of making an indie feature. While I would love it as an art form, I did not win the lottery so if the odds are slim of getting my production money back and then some for my time and energy, honestly I would rather be told that by those of you that know, and make an informed decision, maybe then makes shorts for the sake of art, write scripts, do some oil paintings, etc.

... Hollywood is trending back to the studio's developing thier own movies where they buy a script and develope it themselfs from the ground up, produce it then distribute it. It gives them more profit and eliminates amateur mistakes...
