That's it?:badputer:

You gotta be freakin' kidding me. Come on Canon. Where the hell is our AVC-HD replacement for the A1? I was hoping that we would get an AVC-HD replacement summer or fall of 09, which would be right about the 3-year mark from when the A1 was announced and released. I mean the current A1 has an SD card slot right above the battery bay, kinda like the Pany HMC-150. So now we most likely will not get an AVC-HD version or an XH-A2, which would have the real refinements, until 2010 or 2011.

Plus, what kind of an upgrade is this anyways? A few extra connections, but not even ONE SINGLE HDMI terminal. WTF? And they get off giving this an "s" upgrade. I'm offended. This thing better at least have noticeably better low light and less noisy gain settings, but I doubt it.

Scarlet can't come soon enough.

Even if it wasn't AVCHD They could have at least done HDV to compact flash like the sony Z7U. Oh well I've already got the card unit anyways. The current A1+the CF card unit is good enough until Scarlet drops.

I don't see why they wouldn't just do both built into the camera, even if it drove the price up two or three hundred more, it would be worth it. They've already got an SD card slot in the back, and could just keep the same basic body size/shape and still include the tape deck. I mean, why not? We're in a transitional time now between HDV and AVC-HD. It just ticks me off when I had my hopes up for a really kick-arse A2 that could have given the HMC-150 a run for its money. I don't think we can realistically expect an A2 until after the XL-H2 comes out, and that could be quite a while now. How the heck is Canon going to remain competitive when they impose ridiculous limitations on the 5D mkII's video mode (no 24p / 60i / 60p), and then this miniscule upgrade on the heels of the big Scarlet announcement?

I agree with what you're saying though ecking. At least that would have been something to tide us over until the AVC-HD era arrives.

I applaud the independent audio channels (it was about bloody time Canon) but this release is about as lacklustre as JVC's announcement of a new model in the JVC GY-HD201B earlier this year - wake me up when they release a proper new model not a firmware tweak and cosmetic makeover

I applaud Sony & Panasonic for listening to their users, IMHO for the moment if you wanna go tape less with better motion rendering the HMC150 is the way to go :)

[...]Lens offers manual zoom and focus, which can operate simultaneously in either manual or Autofocus mode.

Did they actually finally fix this?

[...] the ability to simultaneously record sound from the supplied internal microphone and an external microphone;

and this?

About time. Only took them 11 years (since the XL1) to get these right.

- Mikko ... put Canon back on the "seriously worth considering" pile.

I bought an XHA1 in august, and I thought I was going to regret not waiting. Some of these features are handy, but won't really affect the picture at all.

I've had one for a year and I like it, but not enough to "cross" grade to an "s" model. Pretty weak upgrade...

Why can't Canon take the CMOS large chip, lens mount and processing from the 5D MKII and turn that into a killer $5,000.00 HD camcorder? They could own the market if it had a faster scanning shutter to eliminate rolling shutter artifacts.

Tape is dead or should be soon. HDV is dead or should be soon. 1/4" and 1/3"chip fixed lens cameras are dead (developmentally) Sure would be nice if Canon or Nikon just went that extra step to make a Scarlet competitor, they could do it quicker and cheaper than RED if they wanted to.

Dan

I think that will happen, these just look like a stop gap until then.

I bought an A1 this spring, and when I saw the thread title, I winced... Needn't have worried, though. These are pretty minor upgrades.

I'm with Dan, on wanting Canon to shoehorn the 5D's sensor into a video platform. Scarlet's going to kick a lot of butt, and the big guys had better have something cool behind the curtain.

This update is great! They fixed all the gripes I had, mainly the split audio and the manual zoom. I would Kill for my A1 to have a manual zoom.

I guess with Canon's conservatism, the chances of a 5D sensor this early was probably a stretch, but they could have at least included AVC-HD and 720p modes so that we could shoot 720/60p for slo-mo. Now the inevitable AVC-HD version will take another upgrade cycle longer. As people migrate towards AVC-HD or something else like an HPX-170, EX-1, Scarlet, etc... Canon will have lost a lot of ground. Unless they change their strategy, they've just handed over a large percentage of their customer base to Panasonic's HMC-150.

I think that Canon is just working on something similiar to Red/Scarlet/CMOS/flash/wavelet codec style of technology according to what said Canon representative during last NAB

Well, if they come out with an affordable camera with that kind of tech and interchangeable EOS lens mount then I think we'd all be very happy. If that is the case then maybe these "s" models are meant to give them a little extra time to develop the new stuff for late 2009 or into 2010.

Hopefully this is the case.

Right on! Canon hdv's cams have always been the lame duck of the group. This Nab they'll probably just come out with an Xl-h2 with new framerates or something, arrg. Some body dropped the ball if people are more interested in their photo cams for their video, than their own video cam line!

Hmm. IMHO to say the XL and XH line of Canon cameras are a "lame duck" of any group is simply misinformed. They could surely be improved, and the upgrade is paltry, but where did you get the impression that they're anything but stellar cameras?

Not to start a flame war, but it's a curious opinion.
