Compact AVC INTRA camcorder coming

Just checked this forum for news on AVC-INTRA and to my surprise it seems like the following information has not yet reached the US:

The European product manager of Panasonic gave a speech at the IBC fair in Amsterdam about the future of AVC-INTRA and said 'an AVC-INTRA camcorder with a form factor similar to the HVX200 can be expected in a few months'.

A price point has not yet been announced still it looks like the days of XDCAM-XE and DVCPRO-HD will be numbered, when the first really professional 1920x1080 codec shows up in a compact camcorder...

Wow, this is pretty amazing. Kind of a bummer for those who just bought new cameras, but in the long run, a pretty cool announcement.

Wow... Already? Let's hope it's not 1/3" CCD.
Why not? I mean, assuming there are improvements to the CCD that let it take full advantage of the resolving power of AVC-Intra, of course.

If there's any truth to this, which I guess it seems there should be, then if it's going to be in the same form factor as an HVX that pretty much dictates 1/3". So would you rather have 1/3" CMOS? CMOS could potentially make it sharper... but with the rolling shutter. Then again, if CMOS has improved to the point where rolling shutter wouldn't be a problem, it'd make for an interesting option.

If this camera were to release just a few months after the HPX170, one would have to guess that the sensors would be the same as the 170/200A. If so, the question would be is AVC Intra worth it with that front end? I think it's clear that 1/3" full raster CCD's are unlikely.

There's always gonna be some problem some where. There are a lot of benefits to CMOS that are clearly showing in the EX series Camera's and RED, not to mention DSLR's such as the d90 and 5D MKII.

If the implementation of the sensor is as strong as RED's then Rolling Shutter is something I'm willing to deal with in exchange for Resolved Detail and Latitude.

I'd rather have a 1/2" CMOS over a 1/3" CCD.

It would be nice to get a Full Raster HPX170... in the end, though, it still won't have the resolution and latitude because it's limited from the get go.

Kholi,

do you think the camera would just add full raster HD?
I mean, aren't the 170/200a sensors capable of that?

Yay..no more subsampling

Never saw that post before. Wish I had, though. I would keep saving at this point, to be honest. And, that's normally not what I would do. 1/2" Chips would be insane. ANd LOL at all the people nay-sayin' in that thread. Teeth kicked.

I respect their rights to nay say, there was no official information in that thread.

Save - Kholi - haha no its not normally something you'd do, we know your camera history. Im just as bad as you except im only 20 and a lot less money.

Hello my name is Joe and i have a Broadcast Tech fetish.

Okay, with today's announcement of the HPG20, which brings AVC-Intra down to the P2 Gear-sized unit, I'm thinking it's probably a lot more likely that there could be a small AVC-Intra camera coming, so I'm not a naysayer anymore.

When was the last interesting year in video? Was it 2007? Next year, 2009, should be another wicked affair.

And, with the way technology is speeding along, every day will be an interesting year for Video. Hopefully, by that time, I'll have learned that it's not the tool but the carpenter... or I'll be suffering massive brain hemorrhaging on a daily basis.

Hi Barry:

Do you have a link for this product? I Googled it and looked at the Panasonic Pro site but cannot find anything on it. A press release somewhere?

Thanks,

Dan

Dan,

Just Google the model number. Creative Cow and Studio Daily have the release.

This is a cool unit, a smaller, less expensive version of the HPM110, it would be great to use
with my HDX900.

So many delightful sounding combinations.

XL-H1, XH-G1 + This
EX-1 + This

You could keep the popular delivery format and get a better image from the get-go.

Interesting, it could be an upgrade of the 500...

And sleigh the rest of their HPX lineup? no, that'd be like Sony giving the Ex1 the PDW700's 50meg codec.

I'd say it might be a 1/3" CCD based hand held camera. As much as i'd like 1/2" Native 1080 CMOS imagers i dont see it happening. Native 720p CCD's would be nice.

If these companies don't start slayin' their own lineup, someone else will.

The thought of native 720p CCD's sounds better than what we're getting, but, wouldn't that require a larger body?

Based on today's technology, yes. Unless you're willing to give up 60P. They could probably make a native 720P/30 CCD, but 720/60P required JVC to split the chip in half to get it to work.

There is no perfect solution; if it's going to be small (i.e., 1/3") it'll either be pixel-shifted CCD, or interlaced CCD like everyone else uses, or CMOS.
